AVAILABLE
Ascending Waves
Oil on linen
40 x 40cm

One of the available pieces I exhibited at The Other Art Fair last month.

The painting is part of a collection of imagined landscapes, each embracing an abstract approach to landscape painting. The focus is on the colour palette and the directional marks made with a palette knife, which creates movement throughout the composition. While the mountain silhouette is relatively simple, it’s the dynamic texture and expressive marks of paint that define the mountain landscape.

This piece is available to buy! Visit my website shop or send me a message if you are interested :)

I’ll be honest, painting a commission for a room where purple is the dominant colour really had me out of my comfort zone.

Last week I shared a little about my commission process (check it out if you missed it), so I thought I’d take you behind the scenes of a specific project I completed earlier this year, from the initial brief to the finished painting.

After chatting with Heather and Andrew about what they had in mind, the challenge was to take inspiration from the existing decor and create a landscape that felt warm and peaceful.

We talked trees, hills, and lakes, and explored a few different ideas before finding a middle ground that felt just right for the space.

Swipe through to see how it all came together ✨

🖼️ I’ve got space for a couple more commissions in time for Christmas. If you’ve got an idea in mind, or just want to find out more, I’d love to chat about it with you :)

A couple of people have got in touch about painting commissions ready for Christmas, so thought I’d share a little look into how my creative process works - from initial conversation through to the finished painting.

You might know exactly what you’re after or maybe it’s just a very rough idea….it all starts with a chat.

Willow by the Water
AVAILABLE

The final oil painting from my little summer obsession with willow trees.

After loads of drawings, studies and smaller paintings, this is where I ended up. I think it might be my favourite tree painting I’ve made so far.

Anyone else feel the same as me? There’s something about a willow tree draping over a body of water that is instantly calming, with all those little pockets of light and colour trickling through. The king of trees I tell you!

Willow Tree Summer.
Summer’s gone and autumn’s here, and I’m a little bit disorganised when it comes to posting these days, but I guess it feels fitting to wait until the change of season to show you what I’ve been working towards the last few months.

When it comes to tackling painting ideas, my usual protocol normally starts with a digital sketch - maybe sometimes I’ll test an idea with real paints - before jumping straight in to a final painting. There’s not really a lot of actual painting prep work involved and I suppose I like to finish a painting while the idea is still fresh.

And it usually works for me, but I’ve been a little bit obsessed with willow trees over the summer and have really enjoyed making a load of drawings, studies and little paintings in preparation for this willow-inspired final piece.

I think it’s my favourite tree painting I’ve ever done!
Testing ideas + preparation = a successful painting. Who knew???

There’s something about a secluded beach all to yourself that brings unrivalled levels of peace and tranquility, know what I mean? Here’s one that I imagined, with a tree acting as the main character of course (skip to the last photo to see those knife-marks pops in the sunlight):

If you’ve been following me for a while you might know that my ideas for paintings usually start digitally as flat images drawn on an iPad. Some may say that’s sacrilege, but for the most part it works for me. However it does mean that the opportunity for those happy accident moments is greatly diminished compared to testing ideas through sketch painting with actual oil paints. Admittedly real deal painting is also a much better way to learn and develop by testing ideas with a real life medium, rather than overly planned out digital work.

So recently I’ve been going back to basics and having more fun with developing work with real paints. Here’s a selection of sketch paintings I made in July.

Let me know in the comments which theme is your favourite! It’s the willow trees for me 🌳
