Tahurangi Spring Summit Attempt🏔️
First off all what a quest!!!
Although we didn’t reach the summit and cut it shy of 150 meters, I’m still wrapped!🤩
We set out on the mission with high hopes of summiting Tahurangi for sunset. Unfortunately we ended up turning back due to the terrain of the snow being pretty poor making it unsafe for myself and my pair to safely climb and summit the peak. We had found ourself in a situation where the snow gradually got worse turning into pebbled ice and some sections solid rock ice. Not ideal to safety navigate our way to the top successfully. After getting off the ridge and sending it left to see if we could find better quality terrain near the valley we made the call to turn back. During a moment of decision making to one another we witnessed a fridge size snow boulder tumble down the valley right where skiers had previously been walking up early that day. After watching that it was definitely a straight decision to start carefully making our way out of the situation we had gotten ourselves into. We started traversing back to the ridge when all of a sudden the weather packed in and desided it wanted to show us what a cheeky white out looked like along side that the winds grew from 2kms to 20kms within minutes. Almost loosing my pair in that time of crappy conditions we safely and carefully made our way back to safer and more stable snow to start our decent back down the mountain. Definitely a scary moment on the mountain but luckily we made the right decisions and had been properly geared up in the situations. Overall it was an incredible hike with wicked views, this mission was quite an eye opener how quickly weather can change in alpine conditions and how powerful the mountain really is. I have a huge respect for mountaineering and am quite happy with our decision to respectfully decent without a summit that day, along side that it was a awesome opportunity to learn and take onboard everything I in-counted and learned from my more experienced pair. In my eyes the summit isn’t the reward but the whole journey and getting out there is! Will be back to summit the mountain next weather gap or during summer. Solid mission!🤌🏔️ by @conor.explores

Ngauruhoe spring summit mission⛰️
Well where do I start what an epic mission that was, started the mish at 2:20am to try and summit at sunrise being at 7:00am. Little did I know how much harder it was going to be compared to the summer summit I had completed earlier in the year. We faced frozen scree which for me made the climb incredibly harder to the point where I had to use my ice axe to chip away foot wells for my foot placement. To be completely honest this was the scariest mission I’ve been on and I was lowkey shit scared of slipping and falling. But with all the focusing and right decision we were able to climb safely to the summit. We slapped on the crampons to get to the summit and explore the near peaks. How bloody incredible. Perfect conditions aswell! For the future of another spring summit or a full winter summit I know now where and what our mistakes were and what we did well. Overall a wicked mission to write down in the books and I am feeling incredibly grateful, motivated and fulfilled! Big ups to the boys @gunadventures & @luka_temaro for accompanying this awesome adventure!🏔️🤙 by @conor.explores
