I saw this artwork and it prompted some reflections.

Shavasana is, more often than not, my favourite pose! Then there have been some instances when it’s felt like the longest few minutes of my life.

Because it’s a threshold, a somewhat vulnerable “thinning”. Not sleep, not waking. The seam between them, where the body can stop announcing itself, the mind can let go of its usual grip on things, and maybe we go to that place beyond words.

But not always. Sometimes Shavasana is LOUD.

For some bodies, stillness is where the ease lives. For others, it’s where the vigilance shows up. This isn’t a failure to relax. A nervous system that has learned to stay braced doesn’t just unlearn that because we’ve cued “let go”. Sometimes stillness is the first moment all day the body has room to register what it’s been holding, and that can be a lot to meet at once.

“surrender” is not what we should demand of anyone (an overused word in yoga, and one I’ve fallen into using before).

Maybe this is what Shavasana can offer: not to dissolve, but to stay a little longer at the edge of things, and see what it’s like to meet yourself there.

For me, part of a trauma-informed approach to teaching is not asking someone to respond in a certain way, but creating enough permission and agency for them to feel into what they’re actually experiencing . We can’t manufacture total safety for another person, but we can offer conditions where there is less demand to perform, and more space to listen and notice.

A shout out to @rosaliefei.yoga, who created those kinds of conditions for me this morning- enough space, permission and trust for me to experience a deep Shavasana🤍

🌀EMBODYING THE SPIRAL 🌀

Tuesday 30th Sep, 6-7:15pm

We are so excited to welcome Albee of Green Monday Studios as a guest teacher at the Shala.

This special 75-minute class is an embodied, breath-based slow flow yoga and meditation session leading into deep rest. Balancing softer and stronger elements at a meditative pace with music shaping the atmosphere throughout.

The symbol of the spiral an ever-present, churning, a continuum, a returning. From the unfurling of ferns, to Celtic carvings, to the swirling of star constellations - the spiral threads through nature, culture, and the human body, carrying a sense of growth, rhythm, and cyclical flow.

In this session, Albee will guide you to explore the spiral both outwardly and inwardly—through breath, movement, and meditative awareness.

Expect layered invitations: yogs shapes, somatic attunement, metaphor and poetry, and non-linear movement—allowing the spiral to emerge through your own embodied experience.

This class is included in all membership and pass options or can be booked as a drop in. Please book in advance to avoid missing out 🤍 taken in Mparntwe by @conscious_practice

At first glance, this looks like a nervous system - fibres branching, pulsing, reaching. But it’s actually a tree. Or perhaps both?

In somatic work, we often come back to the idea that our bodies aren’t separate from nature, we are nature. The nervous system isn’t just something inside us-it’s how we feel, respond, connect, and protect ourselves.

Like tree roots or river systems, our nerves branch out based on how we’ve grown, what we’ve lived through, and how we’ve been supported (or not).

Somatics invites us to slow down and feel into those patterns. To notice the signals: what’s firing, what’s frozen, what’s tender.

And to know that change- real, felt change can be found with slow persistent titrated practice.

Like the tree, we’re always growing, shedding, and re-rooting. Bit by bit. Breath by breath.

It’s yoga + somatics time 〰️〰️

This week we turn towards the WOOD element in Chinese medicine, the element associated with the season we’re currently in.

In TCM, Wood speaks to movement, growth, direction and our capacity to respond when our path changes.

It is also associated with the liver and gallbladder, and with the qualities of discernment, and one I’m always working on- ➰adaptability➰ Eeek!! I like things a set way 😤

We’ll explore these ideas through all the usual suspects: embodied movement, breath, asana and attention. We’ll ask what it might mean to have both direction and adaptability: to know when to move forward, when to yield and when to change course. It can be very hard, but we simply must try!

Let’s find our way together.

Class on Wednesday falls on the spring (Poorneet Season) equinox here in Naarm.

For a brief moment, day and night meet in the middle.

This will be a practice in attending to opposite qualities- perhaps the pull between light and dark, expansion and contraction, soft and strong.

To notice the tension between them, and the necessity of making room for both.

Omg Wendell Berry died.

I keep coming back to why his writing mattered so much to me: he never let the political separate from the physical world. The care for soil and the care for community were the same. He wrote about pruning trees and protesting nuclear plants, about family and industrial agriculture, with the same conviction that how we live is can’t be separated from what we believe and what we are willing to fight for.

I think that’s what has stayed with me most: the refusal to treat the world as a collection of separate concerns.
His work kept bringing me back to the things that make a life and that we all deserve- to land, food and water, meaningful work and dignity , family / community, and to the question how these things are shared, protected, and made possible for everyone: what kind of world are our choices helping to make?

What an incredible body of work to leave behind.
Rest peacefully , amongst the wild things.

Voice over is of Wendell. The slip (last poem) if my favourite of his ❤️‍🩹

Can you feel it? Yang is on the move 🌸

The matted flax-lily are in bloom, jasmine and boronia sweeten the air, and the days stretch a little longer as the light returns.

What we observe in nature, we observe within ourselves- the quiet pulse of energy emerging, a first unfurling after winter’s rest. As @adalimonwriter says ‘a new slick leaf
unfurling like a fist to an open palm’.

For those of us on Wurundjeri Country, we are entering the wet, warming, transitional season of Poorneet across September and October. Creeks and water holes fill with young tadpoles as steady rain continues, Currawong birds are at their noisiest, we begin to shrug off winter/waring season and everything starts to HUM.

The word is 𝘠𝘌𝘚, the movement is 𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘗𝘗𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘍𝘖𝘙𝘞𝘈𝘙𝘋 the energy is 𝘌𝘟𝘗𝘈𝘕𝘚𝘐𝘝𝘌.

So join me next week in an embodied celebration of this shift.

𝑩𝑶𝑫𝒀 & 𝑺𝑶𝑼𝑵𝑫 #7
w/ live cello by Abby Sundborn
@ab.ss.s

Thursday Sept 24
6:30-8pm
@greenmondaystudios
$30/$40/$50

I’m pleased to invite you to the seventh iteration of Body & Sound: my ongoing exploration of what happens when embodied movement and live music meet, listen and respond to one another in real time.

Abby and I seemed to keep appearing in the same places- at very specific gigs, in movement classes, in the orbit of one another’s creative worlds. Then we discovered we lived only a couple of streets apart! There was something quietly uncanny about all these crossings. Collaborating felt less like a decision and more like a matter of timing. Kairos, you could say: the opportune moment.

Abby is a cellist and composer working across classical and experimental contexts, with a beautiful sensitivity to sound, embodiment, time and place. I first saw her perform with a trumpet player at @1ne_year and quickly fell in love with her intuitive style, so I’m really excited to finally bring our practices together.

I’ll guide a 90-minute embodied practice moving between slow-flow yoga, yin, somatic enquiry, guided non-linear movement and deep listening, with plenty of space for the cello to shape, and be shaped by the practice. There’s no precision or polished shapes or particular way you need to move; it’s an invitation to listen, respond and find your own way into the experience.

And so, when it came to choosing a theme for this edition, 𝑲𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒐𝒔 almost fell into our laps. It is the ancient Greek idea of time not as something measured or accumulated, but as a quality of the present moment- the moment when something becomes possible. Unlike 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒔, the linear passing of time, 𝑲𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒐𝒔 speaks to timing, readiness and the felt sense of WHEN.

It seemed impossible not to follow that thread, and so here we are.

I hope you can join us on Thursday Sept 24 🎼
Reach out if you have any questions.

The spiral is everywhere 👁️

In the unfurling of a fern, the turning of a shell, the orbit of a planet. Even our blood moves through our veins in spiral motion(!)

It is not a straight line, and it is not quite a circle. It is a movement of returning- coming back to something, but never in quite the same place.

In class this week, we’ll explore the spiral through the body: twisting, spiralling, unwinding and finding new and efficient pathways through movement.

I’ll share some Rilke (the goat!), reference the work of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen and Joanna Macy and look at the ways the spiral has been represented and understood as a sacred form across many cultures and traditions.

And honestly, I’m having such a good time following this thread. One idea keeps opening into another and the spiral seems to be getting bigger and bigger 🌀

I feel incredibly lucky that I’ve managed to make this my job - that I get to follow a genuine curiosity, disappear down a research rabbit hole, and then bring some of what I find back into the room to explore together :’)

It’s August, and here in Naarm we’ve stepping into GULING season.
Guling (Woi-wurrung for orchid) is one of the seven seasons of the Kulin seasonal calendar - a time marked by the blooming of native orchids and the landscape’s emergence from Waring / winter.
Unlike the four imported European seasons, Kulin seasons are relational - guided by the changes, behaviours and relationships of the living world around us.
Guling is a season of stirring and emergence. Orchids bloom, birds begin gathering materials for nests, caterpillars are at their plumpest, and the landscape carries a sense of anticipation.
We are emerging from winter, but we are not yet in full bloom. Guling feels like a threshold - a moment where new life begins to gather. Let’s explore that feeling together 🖤

Morning words from John O’Donohue.

I’ve been using these words like a mantra - letting them slowly shape the way I meet the day, in the hope that they become less of an aspiration and more of a lived reality.

Some prompts for you all- inspired by the river and this mantra:

〰️Where in your life might you be holding on a little too tightly? (Maybe it’s to a person, place, your own identity, an expectation of someone or yourself ?) What would it be like to leave room for an unfolding surprise?

〰️What social and cultural rigidity have you inherited from the world around you (perhaps urgency, productivity, gripping, possessing?) and how do they live in your body and affect how you are in the world?

〰️When do you feel most like a river: flowing with life rather than pushing against it?

Love Albee
