wearable change, by jasmine coleman

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Do we literally have to dangle a basket and beg, “Kindly return me my rights, please?”

Inequality is unjustifiable. Don’t be afraid to speak up—or, even dramatically get on all fours and moo. When your rights are being ignored or withheld—as they are right now in this country—that is hardly a ridiculous thing to do.

Ask:

Did I cluck? Did I neigh? Did I baah?? Did I by any chance, moo? Is this a farm? Are you a farmer?

..Am I a person?

Anything to make them recognize 1) your humanity, and 2) how ridiculous they sound. Be embarrassing, because bigotry was, and is, embarrassing first.

You can also just…wear this outfit..

*(Yes! The outfit pictured here is available for commission! Forms will be at your disposal, ready for you to fill out later. Let’s see how this very exciting, very scary thing goes this Summer.)*

In the name of every injustice, here’s wearable change. Thank you for being the biggest part of it 🫶🏽♥️. by @consciously.candid

I realized that sometimes ones “purpose” is just breathing.

The most beautiful thing about “just breathing” is that is has the potential to create an extraordinary ricochet effect that maybe inspires someone else to keep breathing too.

The umbrella represents how much i’ve tried to protect myself and others from the inevitable hardships of life. Moving forward, in order to fully live, I have to lower my umbrella—we have to lower those umbrellas.

Just know that these are your lives. This one’s mine. And I’m truly happy to be here with all of you.

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

On expendable, performative love |

Deep down, we want to prove to those who made us feel unlovable, that we were—that we are.

Ayni. It means today for you, tomorrow for me”, and is my middle name spelled backwards. I find my self-love to be expendable. Yours is too, isn’t it?

Because the love I have for myself is dispensable, I often fill the gaps with performative behavior that I think could bring the love I seek. It’s a circus.

Really, I, and all of us—we’re seeking our own hearts. Our own love.

If we are incapable of loving ourselves, every person who tries to love us becomes “liar” by default. It is automatic.

I know we’ve all heard it—love yourself!” But what does that even look like? What does it mean? Where does it begin?

Self-love isn’t just liking what you see in your mirror or camera’s viewfinder. If you’re anything like me two years ago, thinking self-love stops there will leave you feeling inexplicably empty.

The true meaning of self-love? I am sure we are all still trying to catch grasp of that slippery sucker. But don’t give up on finding it. It’ll be different for each of us.

Nothing puts a smile on my heart more than kissing a friend with praise, and hoping that what I see in them, they’ll see in themselves. And one day, that I’ll see what you see in me, in myself. Thank you for all the reminders. I cherish all of our little moments in this big world. I’m in constant awe of all of you beautiful people here on this platform. I’m lucky I get to exist at the same time you do.

Figure out what it means to love yourself. Sing love songs to yourself, kiss your own hands, hug your own heart for hours at a time until the sun goes down. And if you are able, lean on those who love you.

Pay attention to those you perform around, and those you don’t feel the need to. The latter, those are your people. 💗💗💗

Love you love you love you.
— ayni, who’s trying to become just plain jasmine inya.

On this day, my heart goes out to my indigenous family, from one whose family was stolen—just as were the lands, and the bodies of massacred Natives we stand on today—to everyone it should concern.

 it should concerns us all.

it does concern us all.

The more we come together as a single people, the more pressure we put on a past that’s hidden, until finally, the structure that hides the truth crumbles. Truth is a powerful weapon. Truth brings real change. Time’s up for ignorance.

May the history of today never be repeated as we remember one of the saddest of yesterdays.

It makes me so happy to live in a time where truth tellers and change makers aren’t afraid to stand up. My mother has been that example for me my whole life, and it’s because of her I am the way I am—even though she attests that I am her spirit on robust steroids, haha.

Stay tuned for a donation announcement in a couple days! All proceeds from the sale of this “Stolen on Stolen Land” sweater will be going to my favorite Indigenous-owned brand @urbannativeera! I’ll be using the money to buy hats from their store, which will be given away on my Instagram. ♥️

Stay safe! Be love.

It’s Halloween, 2021, and there are still some people who don’t understand what is offensive insofar as “costumes”. The Issue is you can buy hurtful, so called costumes at wholesalers—easily. Meaning, these giant corporations are endorsing and profiting off of pain, suffering, propaganda—you name it.

For example, one can buy a “Native American” costume from wholesalers like Amazon and Walmart, super easily. Target and Party City have their stuff together and aren’t selling them (this year. totally used to.) Coronavirus is still a fairly new phenomenon, so Amazon and Party City carry a small assortment of costume and costume pieces, like a covid vaccine vial, spiked protein masks, things like that. Target and Walmart haven’t caught on yet—and shouldn’t…

These “costumes” shouldn’t even be costumes. It is wrong to profit off of someone else’s suffering. It has always been wrong and will always be.

Peyton and I both have quite recent Native/Indigenous ancestry, but neither of us identify primarily as Indigenous. Nor have we the experience or firsthand account of their pain and their struggle—so we know that we are not entitled to, nor would we want to disrespect that culture. Anyone’s culture. Not on Halloween, or ever. And Covid-19 has taken the lives of so many, globally. It isn’t even behind us yet, so absolutely shouldn’t be profitable or sold as Halloween costumes.

This “Miss Rona” costume is a personal and artistic interpretation of how I process the pandemic and will never be sold, ever. I’m not even wearing this tomorrow. I’ll be a pumpkin for the fourth year in a row!

So, tomorrow is Halloween and together Peyton and I compiled a list of costumes you you should stray far from. We call them Halloween no nos:

“Your playing small does not serve the world.” —Marianne Williamson

When I’m losing sight of whoever I thought I was, my mother always reminds me of this poem. It begins like this:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

To me, this does not mean that we have to behave extraordinarily. There is immeasurable and unimaginable beauty in the ordinary—making all of us extraordinary.

It isn’t easy being yourself, because who is that? A good start at finding yourself is to do one thing everyday that is true to your heart. Despite what others think. Eventually, you’ll be staring that person you’ve been looking for all along staring you right in the face.

Everyone, Jonah P.—one of the most caring, kindhearted artists I’ve encountered on Instagram.

At the beginning of this year, I found Jonah through an Instagram ad showcasing a pair of denim patchwork bell bottom jeans that he designed. They struck me immediately, so I left a comment, and eventually bought the jeans!

I think about a week later he responded saying something like “Hey, I saw your sweet comment! I really appreciate the encouragement, I’m a beginner”. I sent a voice message back—as I do, haha—saying something like, “I’m a beginner too! Just keep at it!”

Long story short, we ended up collaborating and making this pant and crop top set together. We called it The Traveling Pants Project. Originally, this set was a thrifted ASOS maxi dress and an old pair of jeans! It trekked all the way from North Carolina to New York. Then of course, took a trip back to North Carolina, but changed forever.

Our collaboration was supposed to be up months ago, and I thank JP so much for his immense patience. So much was happening on both our ends. Including myself gaining weight after my body positivity post. So, the pants no longer fit me…and that was a huge hinderance for me, personally.

Still, this project deserved to be finished. I wanted it to be special, so I overthought, then filmed. Then failed, overthought, and stopped. Then I picked up filming again and overthought some more until I came out with this.

The talking pants are actually Jonah’s real voice! He just so happens to be a gifted musician as well! The excerpt you hear is from his song called “Likebloodflow” on his album Passerbys. You can stream it on Spotify! And if you’ve never heard my voice, I am the talking shirt, haha. I hope you enjoy it. Tell us if you do!

You can’t sugarcoat 💩…and shouldn’t want to.

In the comments, if you all would like to help me find creative, more organic ways to say this on my grad school applications, please be my guests, haha.

Ever heard the saying, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part go the problem”? I am a firm believer of this. I’ve always wanted to be part of the solution. How about you?

Most of you wouldn’t know this, but I have plans to go to film school! The application process is happening NOW—meaning I have to convince my universities of choice that I am a good candidate for their programs. One question I’m having to answer over and over is what my future plans are in so far as my art—what my vision is.

I so candidly just want to say that I want to disrupt dumb shit.

I’m really happy to say that literally every single person here is into disrupting stupidity, and I’m super proud our worlds collided. Keep at it. Be the change, always.

This cool dress is by @hmx.conscious and was thrifted from @thredup

I couldn’t think of any way to sugarcoat this, there’s just something not right about witnessing @instagram users pleading in their bios for creepy individuals not to harass them in their DM’s.

Whether you are a woman, gender-nonconforming, a man who stands up against other men, have a disability, have a belly, or body hair, or deviate in away way from the prescribed norm, we pay the price for it—we “deal with it.”

My poll—which majority women answered—tells me that they know exactly what I’m talking about. As women, we are socialized for our “safety” to prevent encouraging “the whims” of men. Furthermore, we are taught to say please and thank you and “deal with it, lest we want to be called out of names—or worst yet, physically harmed once stepping out of the cyberspace of the socials. Especially if we are “asking for it” with our clothes and our Instagram posts?

I appreciate the spreading of love and and open celebration, but please, respect me. Respect us. And know, that this “please” is a courtesy. Respect is absolutely essential.

I don’t know about you, but “this body doesn’t feel like mine.” —jm

Instagram should be about sharing what you love. Instead, I witness it becoming a graveyard for artists every day. The world will tell your heart how to beat if you let it. Don’t let it.

My old genius compadre @daniel_nelson93 wrote a song called “Love Means”. Floating on air all the time, sailing a ship that won’t sink on the choppiest seas, care. Not dizzying worry, f⭐️cking drowning at sea, and whatever the opposite of care is.

All that to say, remember why you started sharing what you love. Remember where you want to go. Once you grasp sight of that—eyes in front of you always—run until you make it home. Not llike Joji. Haha, sorry Joji. In addition to all of this, if you see your loved ones falling, offer your arm, (your kidney, a foot up someone’s …) But know, you have to let them walk on their own, too.

This candid is dedicated to Beans, because he’s the paramount reason I’m not dangling from this app like …my grandparents’ old teeth. BEANS, you make laughing life-threatening. you make my playlists better. You make Instagram best. Proud of you always for what you’ve grown through—even things I know nothing about. But most of all, I am grateful you exist.

To all of my artists—do what you love. Leave out all the rest. “I might not be a smart man, but I know what love is.” —Forrest Gump (1994). What I’ve been seeing ain’t it. ♥️

Now..who the heck is Beans? Let’s play Blue’s Clues, haha. IYKYK!

while I make more art, I want to call out the beautiful people that keep my soul alive on this most-times-draining-app. sunshine in the flesh @gypsyrestoratory is one of those beautiful people 💗. WHO, by the way, made this top with her bare hands! It was my favorite sustainable top all Summer. Currently thinking of ways to sneak it into the Fall. 🍂

What we do and do not deserve, it’s not up to us. Thinking I can control that aspect of my life has been so damning. I’m learning.

Permanence and stability is something I feel I don’t deserve, so I—very unintentionally—sabotage having the chance of having anything permanent. Even friends. Even Instagram. Even a future.

My nana called me not too long ago and said “You haven’t been doing Instagram, what’s going on?” So, I’m posting this a day early, haha. This was taken last night while I was listening to something about rain or something, on repeat.

Send me your numbers and a photo of you if you want to stay in touch outside of Insta!! Thank you for doing life with me. I keep all of your notes and things you send me super close to me, always.

I’m doing my best, trying to be brave. Don’t try, but actually be your best selves too, okay? Do your best. You can.

I’m back to posting tomorrow! see you guys ♥️ by @consciously.candid
