Hannah Penn was the first—and only—woman to govern Pennsylvania. Born in England, she was the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who taught her business skills. She married William Penn (a widower) in 1696 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1699, pregnant with their first child. She managed Pennsbury Manor, their country estate, overseeing the household, including enslaved laborers and indentured servants.

When William became ill in 1712, Hannah ran Pennsylvania’s affairs from England until his death in 1718—and continued until her death in 1726. She defended Penn’s will, paid off debts, settled a boundary dispute with Maryland, and kept the colony stable. Penn had named Callowhill Street, a reference to her maiden name, in her honor.

Yesterday, we celebrated the opening of a new special exhibition, “Pennsylvania’s Founding: How a City and a Colony Shaped America’s Civic DNA."

Curated by the Lenfest Center for Cultural Partnerships and Atwater Kent Collection, the exhibit examines how Pennsylvania’s founding and Philadelphia’s development shaped ideas about representative government, religious liberty, civic participation, and constitutional self-government.

To mark the occasion, scholars Marci Hamilton and Randall Miller joined Julie Silverbrook for an #AmericasTown Hall conversation exploring how Pennsylvania’s founding shaped the nation’s understanding of religious liberty and William Penn's legacy today.

After the program, attendees got an exclusive first look at the exhibit, which is now open to the public.

#PAFounding is FREE to all visitors with no museum admission required and runs through January 3, 2027.

Last week, Congressman Brendan Boyle came to the National Constitution Center to announce plans for federal legislation establishing a national commission to begin preparing for the 250th anniversary of the Constitution in 2037.

This next phase presents us with a unique opportunity to maintain the infrastructure we have built and continue to build upon it.

This week for the Civic Decade, Julie Silverbrook writes about this opportunity: how will we maintain the networks established to honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as we look forward to our nation's next notable anniversaries.

It is an honor to be selected as finalists in ICOM's COMMS Awards, which celebrates the museums and communicators reimagining how institutions connect with the world.

We've received this recognition for our #CivicSpark Studio, a physical installation which collects visitor stories.

What is a #CivicSpark? A Civic Spark is a moment or experience that connects you to the ideas that shape our communities and our country. It might be a visit to a national park, a lesson in school, military service, a meaningful conversation with a family member, or a moment that inspired you to learn more about the world around you.

Our submission to the ICOM Comms Awards covers the process of how we built the physical studio and reflects on what visitors' videos responses have taught us so far.

Read our submission, explore the other nominated projects and vote now. Visit icom-comms.mini.icom.museum.

This year the National Constitution Center wrapped up a packed day of Constitution Day programming with an #AmericasTownHall exploring the lives and legacies of four influential yet often overlooked founders: John Dickinson, Gouverneur Morris, Roger Sherman, and James Wilson.

Scholars Carol Berkin, Jane E. Calvert, Scott S. Greenberger, and Jesse Wegman, joined moderator Julie Silverbrook for a conversation exploring the ways these founders shaped the nation and the Constitution, including how their legacies continue to impact us today.
