Funky red brick units in Randwick, as seen on a somewhat rainy Monday. It was relatively quiet when seeing a classic matinee at the Ritz on the public holiday.

Ocean views down the end of the street.

Drama in Hornsby.

It was blowing up a storm when @lizluv2travel and I were exploring Hornsby a couple of months back. Made for some dramatic backdrops.

We saw an interesting array of buildings and a fun mural where Ginger Meggs makes an appearance.

It’s grey, rainy skies in Sydney today. Make sure to pack a brolly ☺️

Keeping with the adaptive reuse theme: Battersea Power Station.

It’s probably one of the most iconic adaptive reuse buildings around.

It was built in two parts. Battersea A was built in the 30s in a distinctive art deco style. But then the war came and Battersea B was finished in the 50s in a more austere style. From the outside you can’t tell.

It sat vacant for around 40 years. These days it’s mixed use: shops, offices and apartments and is part of a wider Battersea development.

From industry to art: Liverpool Powerhouse.

Enjoyed going with @annemarieazzopardi to the opening of the 28th Liverpool Arts Society exhibition and seeing her excellent painting 🖼️ (slide 6).

What a fab space! Originally built as the Liverpool Powerhouse in the 1950s to supplement Sydney winter electricity supply, it’s been an arts space since the mid 1990s.

A bonus feature are the two oil and water tanks that are now legal graffiti walls.

While we were there we met @anxiousthetoy who was checking on his artworks.

The tanks are currently closed for new artworks while safety repairs are undertaken.

‘The Mural Room’: old school Melbourne at Florentino, Bourke St.

I’d been wanting to see the Napier Waller murals in the upstairs dining room of this Melbourne institution for a while. I ticked this off my last trip!

I’m not a foodie and you’ll rarely find me in a two hatted restaurant but sometimes you have to make sacrifices for your passion 🤣😝🙃

The 16 murals depict Florentine Renaissance life. Figures include Michelangelo, Botticelli, Donatella.

Waller had just travelled to Italy on a study tour so was a good choice by restaurant owner Rinaldo Massoni, who was a Tuscan immigrant.

The Mural Room has hosted political and social figures, as well as celebrities like Sting, Billy Joel and Dave Grohl.

Robin Boyd redesigned parts of the building in the 1950s.

If you haven’t been, go see ‘Migrating Modernism’ which celebrates the architecture of Harry Seidler.

It details Seidler’s journey from Vienna, Austria to becoming one of Australia’s most influential architects.

I especially loved:

It was like a spiritual experience when I looked up in the sky and saw the 22 degree halo over the Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok!

Pope John Paul II visited in 1984 (hence the statue) and Pope Francis visited in 2019.

Seeing something at the iconic Forum was on my winter Melbourne break wish list.

Luckily there was a very cool movie showing in the Melbourne International Film Festival - a bonus to the beautiful interiors.

I had a lovely chat with one of the friendly volunteer ushers who knew a thing or two about the building.

He told me the Forum is divided into two. Upstairs is the auditorium where the movie was showing, while downstairs is the live music venue.

Next time I’ll have to see a concert to see the other half!

It’s time! Go and book a visit to Gough Whitlam’s family home in Cabramatta.

Amazing to think Australia’s 21st prime minister Gough and Margaret and their four kids once lived in this modest mid century abode.

Gough interviewed constituents in the lounge room, celebrated Labor’s win in the backyard and worked on policy on the kitchen table.

The house had fallen into disrepair and was purchased in 2021. The Whitlam Institute restored it back to Gough’s heyday and it’s open to the public each quarter.

It’s a fascinating insight into a famous Australian political figure’s life in a mid century house in Sydney’s west.

Last night: passing by the old Mark Foy’s building in the cold and rain.

Mark Foy’s department store closed in 1983 and was converted into the Downing Centre courts complex which opened in 1991.

Melbourne’s original seaport, where history meets the bay: Williamstown, VIC

Williamstown was one of the locations considered for the colony’s main settlement. It’s one of Melbourne’s oldest suburbs, (established 1837).

Heritage buildings, maritime history, and adaptive reuse rather than high rise redevelopment (like Docklands)

Former St Georges Theatre/UDC Ballroom: another prominent social and cultural hub in Yarraville, on the other side of the tracks, opposite the Sun Theatre.

Some fun facts:

📓 1891: Opens as St Georges Hall for live plays

📓 1910: First silent movies screened

📓1913: Expands with a new auditorium. The picture palace opens 25 years prior to the Sun Theatre

📓 1959: Permanently closes due to the rise of household television and nearby Sun Theatre

📓1960: Renamed UDC (Universal Dancing Classes) Ballroom and converted into a dance studio

📓 1991: Primary film set for Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom

📓2004: Community dancehall/ballroom closes

📓 2010: Converted into mixed commercial/ residential complex

Last six 📸 pinched from various online sources: original expanded auditorium, UDC Ballroom and building prior to redevelopment.

🎼 Is from the Strictly Ballroom soundtrack.
