As the days draw shorter, CONTACT Darkroom opens up its winter residency.

A resource-based programme offering artists and photographers 24-hour-a-day access to fully equipped colour and black-and-white darkrooms, a dedicated workshop room, and an open gallery.

Designed for both emerging and established photographers, the residency supports the production of new or existing works in a creative, experimental and community environment.

Based in the market town of Totnes, Devon, UK the residency sits within a landscape of the River Dart, running from the upper moorlands of Dartmoor to the Atlantic coast, offering a diverse and compelling environment for reflection and experimentation.

Alex Westfall ( @westfallalex ) a Filipino-American artist, joined us for a three-week residency to work on her long-term project, See Through, and what a pleasure it was. Alex’s approach to image-making in the darkroom is very fluid, bringing together images spanning generations, geographies and decades.

As written about her solo show at @isolde.nyc Westfall’s photographs “progress like an advancing and unwinding roll of film, but their revolution is nonchronological and ever-collapsing”, and we agree.

We’re looking forward to seeing where the project goes next, and we were very happy to play a part in its continuation. by @contactdarkroom

As the weather gets colder, we thought we’d hold on a little longer and reflect back at a few images which make us feel the warmth once more.

@jake.varker has been printing with us since we opened, figuring out the colour dials, the processor and his palette as we’ve worked out CONTACT around him.

Jake has mainly been printing his ongoing project Resurgam, a series inspired by the city of Plymouth. The work explores his personal relationship with the city while considering themes of destruction, regeneration and resilience.

To be able to offer a space for photographers from across the South West to experiment, refine, and live with their work feels like a big part of why we’re here. by @contactdarkroom

@siandavey1 ongoing river series has been a huge inspiration for us at CONTACT Darkroom.

The River Dart, which plays such a pivotal role in all our lives in the South Hams is at the heart of our community and landscape. Seeing Sian’s work, made along its shores, reach global audiences has been particularly inspiring.

Her ability to capture the river not simply as a landscape, but as a place of connection, memory and community, has encouraged us to think about how we might explore our own relationship with the Dart through photography. by @contactdarkroom

Isabel Owen is exhibiting her ongoing work, ‘the self’ this Friday 14th, 6–9pm.

A wonderful mix of B&W and colour works exploring the continuous relationship and conflict between the body and self. Following the traditions of self-portraiture and working within the limitations of photography, ‘the self’ explores growing pains, self-conflict and absence through bodily photographs that aim to desexualise and distort within the landscapes Isabel situates herself in.

Come down, have a look a drink and a chat. All welcome. by @contactdarkroom

A collection of works from our 10-week Summer Term Young Makers Programme.

With photographic and environmental exploration at the forefront of the programme, students were given the tools to collect, record and engage with the River Dart, which runs alongside CONTACT, before coming back to the darkroom, with guidance, exploring different ways of making images. Acetate layering, collaging, RA-4 chemigrams, and cyanotypes all became part of the process. The ability to engage with the natural environment and then interpret that into experimental, playful, creative photoworks is at the heart of the programme.

We are looking to run the programme again, so if you know anyone or any groups who would benefit from taking part, drop us an email.
