A curator’s and artist work is never done.

Caught in the act of making sure every detail was just right before guests arrived at the opening reception of Communal Effervescence: The Celebration of Black People in Community.

One of the things I’ve loved most about co-curating this exhibition with Mila is how much care she brings to the work, not just the art on the walls, but the experience of everyone who walks through the door.

Art. Community. Collaboration. Attention to detail.

The exhibition is on view through June 22 at REACH Studio Art Center.

Day 2 of installation feels like a lifetime ago, and now Communal Effervescence: The Celebration of Black People in Community is officially open.

What began as conversations, planning meetings, artist calls, studio visits, and installation days became a beautiful opening reception on May 29 filled with community, creativity, and celebration.

Convening Co. is incredibly grateful to be working alongside @reachstudioart, @mindofmila, @ourspace517 , and the talented artists who trusted us with their work. This exhibition is a reminder of what is possible when artists, organizations, and community come together around a shared vision.

The exhibition is now on view through June 22 and open Wednesdays 12 PM to 8 PM. If you have not had a chance to visit yet, there is still time.

We also hope you’ll join us again on June 11 for our next community activation and evening at the gallery.

WHERE CAN WE GO?

A place to come be.

We are beginning the process of curating and creating an immersive community art exhibition coming to Lansing in spring 2027.

This exhibition begins with a question: Where can we go when we want connection without pressure, somewhere to create, reflect, gather, or simply rest?

I am looking for visual artists, filmmakers, photographers, poets, writers, sound artists, sculptors, installation artists, and experimental creators whose work explores belonging, community, rest, isolation, lost gathering spaces, imagination, or the places we still hope to build.

I welcome existing work, new ideas, and artists interested in creating something specifically for the space. I want artists to help shape this exhibition from the beginning.

To submit, please email:

• Your name and a short artist bio
• Images, samples, or links to your work
• The title and medium of the proposed work
• A brief description of how it connects to the exhibition
• Any anticipated installation or technical needs

Exact dates, location, and community partners will be announced as the exhibition develops.

Convening Co. is proud to support the 2026 517 Hispanic Heritage Weekend in partnership with Ourspace Foundation.

This year, we’re helping coordinate vendors and volunteers to bring an incredible weekend of culture, food, music, art, and community to Downtown Lansing.

Some of the best conversations happen standing in front of someone else’s work.

Last month Convening Co. made the trip to Detroit for Beyond the Studio: Navigating the Business of Art, hosted by Threads: The Art Exchange; @threadsartexchange. The conversation explored copyright, licensing, contracts, AI, and building a creative practice that can sustain both artists and their legacies.

We also had the chance to spend some time talking with artist Alexander D. Escobar; @artistryofalexander_ about his work and process. Conversations like these remind us that supporting artists extends far beyond exhibition openings. It also means creating space to share knowledge, and ask questions.

Though the gallery walls have come down, Communal Effervescence continues to live on.

Convening Co. was honored to co curate this exhibition alongside @mindofmila and @reachstudioart bringing together artists whose work explored the power of Black community, joy, memory, and belonging.

These moments, beautifully captured by Kendall Lartigue, are a reminder that exhibitions are more than what hangs on the walls. They are spaces for conversation, connection, and collective experience.

Me at the opening night of Communal Effervescence.

For the past several years, I’ve been dreaming about and building @conveningco.studio It started with a simple idea we have all been hearing about: third spaces. Through traveling, building community, and paying attention to the places that made me feel connected; that made others feel connected…. I realized how important it is to have spaces where people can simply exist... Places of beauty, creativity, and belonging that invite us to know one another, see one another, to be with one another.

Over the past few years, alongside my civil rights work, I’ve had the opportunity to support nonprofits, marketing agencies, economic development partnerships, artists, and community organizations. Through that work, I’ve helped build collaborative spaces and learned firsthand about the countless hours, relationships, and coordination required to bring people together in meaningful ways. Communal Effervescence is the first exhibition I’ve curated through Convening Co.

My hope is that one day @conveningco.studio becomes a physical space. A gallery, a gathering place, somewhere you can pop in, say hello, and be in community.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, trusted me, collaborated with me, and encouraged me to keep building.

This is just the beginning.
