a little late to the party here.. but keeping my promise to myself to share more wins this year. extremely honored to have been a part of the Stranger Things 5 Series Finale. provided original music/score, arrangements + on-screen musicians for this scene. the best part of this, is that I got to do this alongside my brother @poppajacques. we’re just two dudes that came up loving music as kids from Hyde Park (Boston), that were insane enough to recklessly pursue music as a career. this was also an official launch of our alliance #MetroWood, aptly named after the Boston streets we grew up on (Metropolitan Ave + Wood Ave.. in my two previous posts.. i talked about the 3rd most important part of a Musical Director’s job (the actual music). in my opinion.. the 1st AND 2nd most important job is how you handle PEOPLE. i feel like any MD worth their salt needs to be able to be the glue between departments. being able to connect the dots between artists’s vision, band, crew, and management effectively. YOU CAN’T BE A SLOUCH MUSICALLY… but i’ll bet money that you’ll lose a job faster by sucking as a leader, than you would if your arrangements aren’t “cool” enough. i abide by this mindset whether im in the live touring space, producing a record, or composing for film. be thorough. be punctual. have fun. and don’t be a 🍆. crews don’t get enough love. Statues Live - 73min of live seasonal winterjazz from LA’s bassist/composer Spencer Zahn @spencerzahn & ensemble, out now. Spencer holds a reputation for being one of the premier bassists on the scene, and his original compositions as both a bandleader and songwriter are marked by a signature air of emotive spaciousness. After moving to LA from NY only a few years back, Zahn was welcomed by the music community here as intrigue for his sound grew organically. I invited Spencer to perform a live jazz ensemble rendition of his album Statues at our Leaving Records seminal ongoing daytime concert series last November, so he took the opportunity to organize a band consisting of the most talented players that we know currently working in Los Angeles jazz. Nicole McCabe @nicolemccabe_ on alto sax, Zach Tenoriro @zachtenorio on electric piano, Vancil Cooper @coop_did_it_ on drums, and of course The Zahn (cheeky nickname for Spencer, give it a try) on his signature bass guitar w.a bit of piano sprinkled-in. We got lucky when the live recording for both our park show and a separate studio set at Altamira Sound @altamirasound of the same band & material just a few days later turned out immaculate - so here we have it - Statues Live. — — — Finally we get to work with illustration goddess Radha Vishnubhotla @radha.v for the cover art here.
