Beyond McDonald's - A Minecraft Imagination

For the past several months @joakin_cary has been working tirelessly using the game Minecraft to create some beautiful visualisations for what the Lowfield Brownfield site could be. Taking ideas from our Paint Play and Possibility day in September, and People's Assembly in January, they have created three inspiring visions for the site.

These spaces are kept empty for profit, but it doesn't need to be this way. Communities have reclaimed these spaces before, and they can again. We hope that these visualisations continue to spark conversations around a hopeful future for this site.

Community 📚♥️🎨

"To encapsulate the various ideas the community had for the ‘Community’ category, a multi-purpose building with multiple functions would be an efficient and realistic way to demonstrate the potential the brownfield site could offer. The building would function as a public library, youth centre, and include hygiene facilities and space for events and exhibitions."

Nature 🍄‍🟫🏞️🌿

"For the ‘Nature’ theme, it’s important to still include some of the community oriented ideas such as outdoor instruments and the mixed-use development, but with an added emphasis on nature. As community members have illustrated, this can include trees that can reduce flood risk and combat pollution which Queens Road/London Road has high levels of, whilst providing more quiet space for locals and families on the school run."

Movement 🚌🚲

"For the third theme ‘Movement’, a mobility hub which brings together different modes of transport could be one idea to create more sustainable urban mobility in a congested area, though improvements have been made. The mobility hub could include a park and ride, a community bike share scheme and include an extra stop for the many buses that pass through Lowfield/Highfield/Heeley, boosting connectivity."

A film screening of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”

🗓️ Wednesday, June 24th
⏰ 6-8pm
📍Union Street Co-Working
🍽️ Food will be provided (vegan and nut free)
😷 Masking is encouraged as an act of community care

As the US has begun to lose its hegemonic grip on the world, it has leaned heavily on bald-face imperialism to re-establish its power. From the genocide in Gaza, to the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, to the imperial war on Iran, the US is trying desperately to maintain its dominant position within the global capitalist system.

A key arm of the US imperialism is its control over mainstream media. This documentary, originally released in 2003, follows an attempted coup-d’état against the revolutionary socialist government established under Hugo Chavez during the Bolivarian revolution. The documentary examines the key role that the media’s allegiance to upper class interests, and its support from US officials, played in facilitating the attempted coup in 2002.

Food will be served at 6 and the screening will start promptly at 6:30. We will also have time for some brief discussion afterwards. Looking forward to seeing you there! by @cooperation.sheffield

Pot luck throwback! 🥘

Thank you to everyone who came along to pot luck in the park last Sunday! Nothing beats a bit of fresh air, a shared meal and a good conversation.

It might seem minuscule, but the act of sitting down and eating together in community with neighbours and friends, old and new, is a step away from the dominant culture of capital, of isolation and division – and a step towards a more compassionate, collective alternative.

Which is why we’re running another one later this month. (Also, because it’s fun!!)

On the 25th of June, we’ll be holding a community potluck event at the Netherthorpe community garden. More details pending, so keep your eyes peeled 👀 by @cooperation.sheffield

Join us later this month for two events that focus on migrant justice and opposing the far right.

On Thursday 18 June, we'll be screening the film 'A World Not Ours'. All profits from this event will be donated to City of Sanctuary Sheffield to help fund their vital work supporting people seeking sanctuary.

Based on personal recordings, family archives, and historical footage, the film is a sensitive and illuminating portrait of three generations of exile in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon.

Then, on Saturday 20 June, join us for a workshop on 'Community Resistance to the Far Right'.

At this free event we'll:
- hear from those with lived experience of the UK's border regime and the hostile environment
- learn about work that is already taking place in Sheffield to combat the rise of the far right
- discuss how we can collectively organise in our communities for migrant justice.

Featuring speakers from Migrants Organise, Voice of Voiceless Immigration Detainees Yorkshire, and Lift the Ban.

🎟️ Book your place for either of these events at tickettailor.com/events/sheffieldtransformed or through the link in our bio!
