What an incredible start to our fundraising challenge 👣every step has been for Pious, and every other individual who has lost their life because of the impact of migration policies

We cannot thank everyone for the support, donations, shares, love....our community is made this challenge a possibility. We are deeply grateful

Meet the #5MarathonsIn5Days Walkers 👋🏽🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏼

“Pious was a friend, adviser, coach, leader and inspiration to me. I am walking in his memory, to resist the system that caused my friend's death, and to raise awareness of the daily impact of migration policies on mental health.” - Eve, @vvidysheffield Deputy Director & ASSIST Trustee

With just 1 week to go, they're preparing to tackle five back-to-back marathons, tracing a giant heart around the Peak District. That's 130 miles (209km) and over 5,500m of climbing (almost the equivalent of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!) ⛰️

They're training hard to honour Dr Pious Nyandoro's legacy and raise vital funds to replenish his repatriation costs, secure the future of VVIDY, and support people seeking sanctuary in our community. 🧡

📅 Add the challenge dates (28 July to 1 August) to your diary and follow the journey as it unfolds. We'll be sharing regular updates and celebrating each milestone.

🌠Remembering Dr Pious Nyandoro 💭

With under 2 weeks to go until #5Marathons5Days , and 32% of our target raised, we are sharing the story of our late brother Dr Pious Nyandoro as the 1st anniversay of his death nears🫂

Pious should still be with us. With such an immense loss, we turn our grief into hope. His legacy, memory and power grow as we begin this campaign for justice.

We defy the systems that took his life. We know he is still with us as we organise, and is no longer suffering.

Thank you to everyone's support for our #fundraiser so far, there is still plenty of time to get involved, so we can:
🪙Replenish the community funds from ASSIST Sheffield which enabled Dr Pious's dignified repatriation back to his home Zimbabwe
🎨Commission a permanent mural celebrating his life and legacy

Join us later this month for two events that focus on migrant justice and opposing the far right.

On Thursday 18 June, we'll be screening the film 'A World Not Ours'. All profits from this event will be donated to City of Sanctuary Sheffield to help fund their vital work supporting people seeking sanctuary.

Based on personal recordings, family archives, and historical footage, the film is a sensitive and illuminating portrait of three generations of exile in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon.

Then, on Saturday 20 June, join us for a workshop on 'Community Resistance to the Far Right'.

At this free event we'll:
- hear from those with lived experience of the UK's border regime and the hostile environment
- learn about work that is already taking place in Sheffield to combat the rise of the far right
- discuss how we can collectively organise in our communities for migrant justice.

Featuring speakers from Migrants Organise, Voice of Voiceless Immigration Detainees Yorkshire, and Lift the Ban.

Your favourite local bike courier crew Feral Express are hosting a documentary short film screening about the lives of WTNB* bike couriers in different cities at the iconic Sheffield queer diy venue @gutlevelsheffield

The films have been made by the WTNB* courier community and have been screened in many cities across the world, big up @de.tour for letting us host the screening of their beautiful films ❤️

Sick of the hellish groundhog day of British politics? Wish the lettuce was back in the running? We can't keep hoping the same system that got us in this mess is gonna be the thing that gets us out of it.

We need to turn this thing on its head and flip the balance of power in this country.

People's Assemblies are where we, the people, sit together and contribute to the decisions that affect our lives. In this time of chaos, we have both a right and a responsibility to help build a new kind of democracy - one fit for the 21st century.

No more ridiculous leadership contests and promises of "change". We are the ones we've been waiting for.

Find a people's assembly happening near you, or start one on your street.

FINALLY ROOTS 3 PHOTOS JUST DROPPED…

Thank you to everyone who came down to Roots 3, you were such a beautiful, warm and receptive crowd. Together, we raised just shy of £500 for local anti fascist organisations and artists and showed why our Sheffield community is so special.

A massive thank you to all our performers, DJs and speakers who were absolutely incredible on the night, and helped us create such an inspiring atmosphere.

Things are a bit scary at the minute but seeing Sheffield stand up in the face of hate fills us with hope, resilience and a deep love for our city and the beautiful people who make it so special.

Organisations such as @sheffieldcarf @antiraidssheffield and @cooperation.sheffield and many more, are actively campaigning for a better future, full of respect, humility and safety for our local communities. Show support and get involved if you can 🫶

An exhibition I put together with Co Operation Sheffield.

We held our guerilla gardening event today on a disused brownfield site that was destined to be a McDonald’s drive thru, in an already traffic heavy, polluted and dangerous area for pedestrians.

It was a lovely day, some highlights being -
🌱 Making wildflower seed bombs and throwing them over the fence onto site
🌱 The whole road being blocked off for a fallen building (everyone ok) and a local business taking the opportunity to blast music in the street
🌱 Planting into our new colourful pallet planters
🌱 Drawing all over the pavement with giant chalk

I really enjoyed getting stuck into collage again for this project too! I took a lot of inspiration from my friend @popua’s tarot deck which was rich with symbolism and collage.

Also great food delivered (despite a complex traffic layout !) by Roshni Kitchen.
