Rewinding (back to April) with this one, as this Friday evening feels like a good moment to return to this glowing light and this vast, empty beach as the sun was setting at Yellowcraig.

This is from the same walk as our previous 🎞️ from here, only a little later, as we were heading back along the shore.

🧡

Three of Fidra from mid-August – as haven’t been back here yet while we’re building up walks with Raf.

We were walking from Yellowcraig to Eyebroughy and the sky was just beautiful. So, the same view, but with different foreground textures and tones.

Same woodland, three different walks on three evenings this week.

Being at home with Raf through the end of August and all September, I feel like I missed a month where the days were gradually creeping, so it’s a surprise to be walking now and find that the light has already gone by half 6.

But I’ve been so glad to be out again, together, that I don’t mind the low light or, in the third photo, walking in the rain.

Taking a break from the woods with a moment from early August, and an evening walk at Yellowcraig that ended with this unexpected glow as we walked back towards Fidra.

Last night, back at Binning Wood. It was getting dark (so early!) but I couldn’t resist these ferns. We’re only doing a short loop at the moment, but every few days that loop will get a bit bigger as we can walk further with Raf. If this is how we’re spending October, I’m not complaining.

On Saturday, back to the woods, and this felt so good.

It was only a 25 minute walk as we’re currently increasing Raf’s walks by 5 minutes every few days, but just to be here, below these trees, surrounded by green, and with no people, after five weeks of 3-4 local walks a day *with too many people*…

We all needed this.

Also reckon this is going to be a regular walk as Raf rebuilds his strength – he can’t plough through soft sand yet – so expect lots of woodland photos coming this way.

Rocks and haar.

I shared this scene previously as a reel but couldn’t resist revisiting this moment. We started this walk in sunshine, but by the time we reached this spot, our turning point, the haar was rolling in, softening the sunset glow.

One of our favourite places, and never more beautiful than with a moody sky and some late evening light.

When we first walked here with the lads, this was a wide sandy beach with interesting rocks. Now, really since Storm Babet in October 2023, we’ve seen the sand come and go, revealing rock formations that had been hidden from view.

We always pause here, at the cairn, and just take in this view for a bit.

Rewinding to pastel skies at Ravensheugh.

It’s the last day in September, the last day of the first month where I haven’t been anywhere. The first month since… years ago, when weekends were all about trips to the Filmhouse and Cameo and going to the gym. Nothing wrong with that, of course. It was just a different chapter of life, and I can look back on it as if remembering someone I once knew. An old friend, who really liked indie movies and training.

There was lockdown, of course, when all our walks were too far away. But we still got outside and had daily local walks with the lads.

So this is the first month where I really haven’t been anywhere as Raf has been on crate rest – other than to see my physio, and I have a brilliant physio, but having your lower back/sciatic nerve worked on isn’t *quite* the same thing as walking along an empty beach at dusk 😅😮‍💨.

But crate rest is over, the wee lad has recovered really, really well from his spinal surgery (with no neurological deficits after four weeks, which is the very best outcome) and we can ease back into walks – very slowly, so we won’t be running along this beach any time soon. But there’s a plan and a time scale to follow. Three months after surgery, if all goes well, we could be back to ‘normal’ walks. So, the last weekend of November, or the first weekend of December.

I feel like I’ve completely missed this transitional month of beautiful light and shifting colours, but it’s only going to make me appreciate October more.

Counting down the days until I can stand here with the wind whipping along the shore.

Yes, bring on the wind and sand-blasted beach walks.

Back to more familiar territory after my previous post, and a favourite view towards Barns Ness.

We barely walked here over the summer – Belhaven became our default, along with a new walk for us this year, near Tyninghame, as we were pretty much guaranteed not to meet people and that’s the benchmark for all walks with Raf.

As you can see from the light, these photos are shared in reverse order. By the time we got back to the lighthouse there was a glorious sunset, but I shared that one already a while back. At this point, the light was still subtle, glowing on the water in the distance.

Do you ever take a photo and it reminds you of the photos you used to take, and perhaps a life you used to have? I don’t mean that in a sad way – it’s just that life naturally changes and photos have that way of taking you back.

This photo reminds of the old days of living in Edinburgh, when it was normal to escape my desk for a bit and take a wander down to Stockbridge with Harris, ending up in a nice cafe together. I always enjoyed those afternoons of city wanders with my boy, and it’s something I missed after we moved.

But then @companybakery opened locally. Saying that, I rarely go these days as while the cafe’s dog-friendly, Raf and Oak aren’t dog-friendly so… But I was in a couple of weekends ago with friends who stopped off on the way home from their Scottish holiday. This photo will look so out of place on my grid but… I was enjoying the tones.
