Hello, I’m Danielle—a therapist, former elite athlete, and the founder of CORE Therapy.

I believe in the importance of having fun as a core value and incorporate it into how I help people. I focus on supporting athletes, business owners, and high achievers who are dealing with burnout, performance anxiety, injury recovery, and the ongoing pressure to stay composed.

“Never again” isn’t just a statement. It can become a life strategy.

After trauma, “never again will I be that powerless” often turns into a protector part running the show.

For some, control looks like achievement, authority, and staying ten steps ahead of everything and everyone. "I'm not anxious, I'm just prepared."

For others, it looks like withdrawal, isolation, and staying small enough to avoid being seen.

Different strategies. Same goal:
- Stay safe
- Stay untouchable
- Stay in control

And it works — in the sense that life becomes predictable. Risk goes down. So does closeness. So does aliveness.

The nervous system decides that boredom and loneliness are a fair trade for not being hurt again.

But control is a trauma response, not a personality trait.

And the parts working this hard aren’t trying to ruin your life — they’re trying to make sure you survive it.

Healing trauma isn’t about “letting go of control” overnight.

It’s about helping those protective parts learn that safety doesn’t have to mean isolation, rigidity, or carrying everything alone.

Safety and connection can exist in the same life.

This book by Richard Schwartz PhD, You Are the One You've Been Waiting For: Applying Internal Family Systems to Intimate Relationships, is a guide to getting to know your parts in regards to relationships. by @coretherapyks

You can understand your patterns and still feel stuck in them.

Insight is just the beginning, not always the change.

When a kid is struggling with anxiety, their nervous system is overwhelmed, but they can't explain what's happening.

Instead of saying "I feel anxious," their stress shows up behaviorally like sudden emotional outbursts, fear of change, stubbornness. It's so common for adults mistake these anxious responses for bad behavior. When this happens, not only is the underlying anxiety unaddressed, but the kid will take on the impressions and labels applied to them. "bad kid" "bad attitude" "liar" "manipulator." That makes things much, much worse for everyone.

As a parent, try to look beyond the behavior. What is really going on? What is the pain they are avoiding?

Music has this way of getting to parts of us that words alone sometimes can’t. These are a few songs that have felt like a little therapy for me—songs that help me process, reflect, or just breathe when I need it most.

This song speaks to me, maybe it will speak to you too.

No rules here—just press play, listen, and feel whatever comes up. Music can be a safe space all on its own.

This is one way to explain Internal Family Systems (IFS). Anger is a "Firefighter" protector that works reactively to prevent emotional pain. Essentially it's a coping mechanism used in fight or flight.

Why is this a bad thing?

It's not! Anger drove you to protect yourself when you were vulnerable.

It becomes a problem when it's the only tool you have to handle emotional pain.

If you find yourself snapping easily, ask: What pain is my anger trying to shield me from feeling right now?

I talk about play every single day.

People who are working all the time, playing sports all the time, or just keeping themselves busy in order to feel productive. Play is something that is totally absent from many people's lives. Most don't realize just how important play can be for your actual health.

I think of that old Alabama song:

"I'm in a hurry to get things done, oh I rush and rush until life's no fun.
All I really gotta do is live and die but I'm a hurry and don't know why."

I also think of the quote made popular by the movie The Shining:

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

But mostly, I think about how I feel when I play. Free, easygoing, joyful.

Start incorporating play into your life. See how you feel.
