It’s been a few weeks and I’m still processing my son Carson’s graduation. Carson graduated from Sage International school in the IB program. He has gone from K-12 at that school and I’m so happy my sister alerted us about Sage so many years ago. I’m so incredibly proud of Carson over coming many obstacles and hardships to get here. I’m thankful for everyone that had a part in bringing him up. My wife Esti for taking on the step mother roll my daughter Colette for being the best sibling Carson could ask for. Huge thank you to his Aunts and uncles and cousins that have been the tightest family throughout his life. I’m so excited for your future and just so proud of you! Love you Carson! by @coreymcdonald

For the last 24 years Dustin and I have gathered friends, family and the snowboard community together to remember our childhood friend Carson Ianson. A few times the road to this spot has been kept closed by Forest Service or snowed in when the rotary was broken but we always have gathered in memory of our friend. Over the years we have lost more close friends making this gathering even more important and special. Ashes have been spread and my wife even proposed to me on top of this QP. Over the years the numbers have varied from 60-200+ people. Covid year there was 7 of us and last year 6. This year was just Dustin and I out at the QP site and it was perfect. Thanks for being such a solid friend for all these years Dustin. Love you very much. Hope we have a good winter so we can build the QP proper next year.

This last year has been very trying and hard both emotionally and physically. Getting used to medication that I have to live with for 4 more years and going back in for more surgery due to complications with my mastectomy the previous year. Things have been tough. Then there’s watching the country I live in gladly walk toward fascism with a smile on. It’s heartbreaking. I’m not one to ignore others pain even if I’m not affected directly by what is causing their pain. I’ve always had this drive to uphold justice and try to use my privilege and be an ally to the disenfranchised and marginalized groups. Not having my regular distractions and things I use to clear my head (snowboarding) has been tough. I recognize my privilege and know there are much bigger issues I right now.

I was reminded of this video in my “memories” from 13 years ago today. I was spending a lot of time working in Lansing Michigan. A friend invited me to go up north to Mt. Mancelona one of many closed ski resorts in Michigan. We were told there was a club that kept the place up and they gave us permission to ride there if we could get the lift going. I worked grooming the park at Hawk island through the night and got a few hours sleep on the drive up north. We had the best powder day Michigan has ever provided me.
This video reminded me how much I used snowboarding to be my happy place and get me through tough times. Seeing it now and experiencing the worst winter on record im realizing I do miss it but how thankful I am for the real love and support from my family and friends. My wife and my son and the loving home we have created is my happy place. Love your people and speak up when you see injustice. Hope it snows again someday. by @coreymcdonald

Last fall after my breast cancer surgery and during my recovery my follow up doctor told me “I dont think we will get you up skiing this year” luckily I don’t ski. But my season was uncertain and just not sure how my body was going to heal. Insurance denied my “chording” rehab for two months. (Look up chording it’s gnarly) so I was having to do rehab on my own. I turned 50 in Jan and my son Carson was hired on the dig squad at Bogus. The season turned out very different and I ended up riding park a ton with my son filming each other and learning (him) and re learning (me) tricks. Thankful I’m still able to board and spend quality time with my son before he heads off to college in a year.

I still don’t know how to process the loss of Jeff Keenan. I’ve wanted to write what he meant to me and the incredible community that he and Sean made and so welcomingly invited me to be a part of. But this is just hard. Life has been unimaginably heavy these last few years and I have been in a constant state of coming up for air only to be hit hard by the next wave of life. I do believe that these losses hurt so bad because we were lucky enough to live life in a way that creates so much joy. And the thought of that joy being taken away just hurts. I’m forever thankful that our paths crossed when they did and that I was lucky enough to have Jeff as a friend. That can’t be taken. My heart hurts for Jeff’s family and loved ones and I’m sending you all my love. I wish I could be up there with you today celebrating his life. 🙏🏽❤️ JKWON forever.

It’s been just about two months since my breast cancer surgery. I wanted to thank my wife Estera & son Carson for taking such good care of me & our household, so I could focus on healing. Also, a huge thank you to Dr. Livingston & her team for making this experience go as smoothly as possible.
Surgery was very successful. They removed the tumor with a clear margin & the lymph node biopsies came back negative for cancer, the first big relief. After meeting with the Oncologist I finally got the news a week ago that I won’t need Chemo or Radiation, another huge relief. I will, however, be taking hormone blockers for the next 5 years in order to prevent the cancer from returning.
This has been the scariest thing I’ve ever gone through but all of the support & love I felt from so many of you helped me persevere. To all the people that continually checked in on my family & I, THANK YOU!!! So much love for you all. ❤️🙏🏽💕

A little over 3 weeks ago on September 6th I was in the middle of preparing for our big Honeymoon trip to Europe. A week before our departure date I get the phone call confirming that I have breast cancer.
Last spring I started to notice a small bump under my left nipple. I have lots of bumps but this one seemed odd and appeared suddenly. I didn’t think too much of it but it was on my mind through the busy spring. Fast forward to June and we’re preparing for a little trip to portland to drop the kids with Chey and Val so we could fly up to Vancouver, B.C. to get my Canadian Passport. It was going to be a whirlwind 48 hour mission to Canada so I went to my Dr. to get some meds for travel to assure we could get the necessary sleep and rest to pull off the Passport retrieval. While at the Doc I had her check out the bump and she immediately advised that I get imaging done. To be honest, that scared the shit out of me and I drug my feet a few weeks before making the appointment. But I finally did and got the biopsy scheduled just to be safe. That was a few weeks before we were to leave for Europe. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be diagnosed with cancer. After getting the results the Friday before our scheduled trip, I was in shock and not thinking about anything other than if we were still going to be able to go to Europe. I kept it to myself for most of the day until my wife got off work so I could break the news to her and Carson after dinner. Their reaction made it real and only then did I realize how big of a deal this was. Seeing their scared & hurting faces for me was heartbreaking. My thoughts were then fixed on the meeting with the Cancer Surgeon that following Tuesday where we would get a better idea of what would come next. After meeting with Dr. Livingston and making a plan, I decided that I am ready for this fight and I’m going to beat this. She let us know that I caught it early and that she thinks the Mastectomy and preventative lymph node removal will be pretty dang successful. From the surgery, they will deduce my post-op treatment regarding chemo, radiation, etc.

Last Saturday, I headed up to CTY MTN FOR CDI. If you can decode that you know. Been going 22 years strong by the power of @coreymcdonald @frozentauntaun @wooprest and @maidenboise. For the first time, the weather kicked us out with a torrential downpour the day of. With safety a concern, the crew packed it in, but man the build was beautiful.

For the first time in 22 years of doing the QP memorial for my best friend Carson David Ianson, Mother Nature prevented us from holding the event due to dangerous weather conditions. Protecting our community and getting everyone out safely was my top priority. I want to thank each person that showed up and helped build one the best set ups we have ever had up there and then stayed and helped tear everything down in the middle of a relentless atmospheric river of wind and rain and fallen trees.

We were not able to have the award ceremony and raffle like we normally do so we have to get creative and wanted to still get prizes to all those that helped and donated. If you already got in the book and donated, you’re in the raffle. If you stayed and helped haul out scaffolding, you are in twice. If you missed out and still want to help out you have until Sunday at 5pm to get in on the raffle. Donate to Venmo @maidenboise and you’re in. We will announce the winners online and arrange prize pickups. The raffle is how we try to help offset the cost of everything it takes for us to keep putting this on year offer year. Also, part of the funds from the raffle will go to Suicide Prevention, along with a portion of funds from the shirt sale. (If you missed the shirts there are still some avail.) A few months back my dear friend @frozentauntaun sent me this pic from May 1995 hiking for some late season boarding with my old friends Carson and Rory. I really miss my friends but cherish these days and how simple life was back then. CDI memorial is a few days away and this pic reminds me of why I continue to do it. I miss my friends and honoring them by gathering community to build and ride a QP in the mountains is my way of continuing to show them how much they meant to me and our community.

Setting up camp and starting the QP build this sat. come on up and lend a hand so we can have a fun session on Monday. Find me and get your name in the book and help dig and bucket the drop in. Please be extra courteous of the camp ground and road as well as the surrounding area. This place is special and we are so lucky we have been able to do this up there for the last 22 years.
