What a day!

Yesterday’s Varnishing Day at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition was full of energy, excitement and wonderful reunions. I was delighted to see my piece, ‘Clocking In’, hanging in Room IX, beautifully placed amongst so many inspiring works.

It was a joy to spot the work of fellow RE members throughout the exhibition and to celebrate with @richendacourt RE and @katya_timoshenko_art RE. 🥂

Many thanks to @eileen_cooper_ra and @katherinejones for their thoughtful curation, and to @ryanjgander for this year’s theme, ‘Interconnectedness’, which runs through such a vibrant and diverse exhibition.

Feeling very grateful to be part of it all. ✨

✨ Delighted to be exhibiting two of my works in the RE Originals Printmaking Annual Exhibition @re_printmakers 2026, which opened last night @banksidegallery Gallery ✨

It was a truly historic evening for the Society as our President, Professor David Ferry RE, announced the granting of a new Supplemental Charter and the official change of name from the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers to the Royal Society of Printmakers.

The Charter was presented in a magnificent ceremonial box bearing the Royal Seal—such a memorable moment to witness.

“We will continue to be known by the abbreviation ‘RE’ and members will retain their post nominals ‘RE’ as a key part of the Society’s identity and history.”
— Professor David Ferry RE, President of the Royal Society of Printmakers

This new chapter coincides with the opening of this year’s RE Originals exhibition, showcasing an inspiring variety of printmaking.

🗓 24 April – 31 May
⏰ Open daily 11am–6pm
📍 Bankside Gallery, right next to Tate Modern

Do pop in if you’re nearby and see this impressive exhibition of original printed artworks—including my two pieces 💫

I haven’t posted for ages, so I felt I had to share a little glimpse of this work in progress!

Sometimes I like to work with my long brushes, keeping a bit of distance from the canvas and building things up gradually, layer by layer.

I actually quite like where this one is at the moment… although I’m not sure it’s quite arrived yet.

So I’m leaving it for a while, and seeing where it wants to go. 🎨

‘In the Groove’ — one of my favourite sculptures, made in Chicago while I was exploring a theme around faces, identity and our connections with one another.➡️

At first glance, you might see five faces… all sharing the same space… which feels like a pretty accurate metaphor for life sometimes. 😂

…but there are quite a few more hiding in the grooves. 👀

I rather like the idea that they reveal themselves slowly — a little like people do.

She eventually sold in the UK, so this little piece of my Chicago journey is now living a new life here

With just a couple of days to go before the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition closes on 23 August, I’ve made my last couple of visits — and this time I really took the opportunity to fully explore and enjoy the incredible variety of work on show.

I’m absolutely delighted that my piece has been noticed and appreciated, and I’m so happy with where it’s been positioned, surrounded by such great company. It’s been a very special experience seeing it there as part of this wonderful exhibition.

If you haven’t been yet, there’s still a little time! 🎨

And if you can’t make it to the exhibition, editioned works such as mine will still be available to purchase online through the Royal Academy until the end of November:

Studio — work in progress.

I often use my printmaking tools when I paint — rollers to build up layers, scrapers to pull the paint back, and tools to score and make marks through the surface.

It’s the process of adding, removing and revealing that interests me.

Still evolving…

Sometimes a piece of work begins with a chance encounter.

I often get asked where my ideas come from. “Tribe” is a good example.

The journey began many years ago when I came across “Tribal Eye” by David Attenborough.

I was immediately drawn to the photographs of African sculptures – their elongated forms, quiet dignity and the powerful way groups of figures conveyed a sense of community. Those images stayed with me long after I closed the book.

They became the spark for “Tribe.”

As always, the idea didn’t emerge fully formed. It began with loose sketches in my sketchbook, exploring different compositions and searching for the right balance between the three figures. These working drawings allowed me to simplify the forms, exaggerate proportions and develop the rhythm that eventually became the finished composition.

From those drawings, I built the collagraph plate, layering materials to create texture and depth. The plate is almost a work of art in its own right, with every mark and surface contributing to the final printed image.

The finished print isn’t a copy of the sculptures that first inspired me, but my own response to them—a celebration of form, connection and shared presence. This journey from inspiration, to sketchbook, to collagraph plate, and finally to the print is one of the things I love most about printmaking. Every stage leaves its own mark on the finished work.

Swipe through to see the journey—from the sculptures that inspired “Tribe”, through the sketchbook studies and collagraph plate, to the finished print.➡️
What began as ‘Tribe’ didn’t end there. It became the starting point for a whole series of drawings and prints, which I’ll share in another post.

Getting inky, sweaty, and doing what I love. 🖤
The studio is sweltering, but the printing doesn’t wait. Every plate has to be inked by hand, wiped just right, and printed before the paper picks up sweat, smudges or stray marks. Keeping everything clean in this heat is almost as challenging as the printing itself.

There are days when the process is as physical as it is creative—black ink on my hands, sweat dripping, and a stack of plates waiting to be printed. It’s messy, demanding and, at times, incredibly frustrating because not every print comes out the way I’d hoped. But when one finally does, and the image emerges exactly as I’d imagined, it makes all the failed attempts, the ink, and every drop of sweat worthwhile.
 🖤💦
Anyone else finding the heat is making studio days twice as hard?

Tonight is the opening of @cupolacontemporaryart Gallery’s 35th Anniversary Exhibition — 1991–2026. AMAZING! 🎉🥂Karen Sherwood @karencupola , the gallery’s owner and driving force, has steered Cupola through thick and thin with extraordinary energy, dedication and resilience.
I’ve been exhibiting there since very soon after the gallery opened and have lost count of how many solo shows / mixed shows I’ve exhibited in there over the years! It’s been a real pleasure and privilege to be part of the Cupola story.
Karen is a true human dynamo — always full of good humour and generosity, a brilliant curator and, indeed, an amazing artist herself. I’m continually astounded by her energy and commitment, even when times are tough.
Congratulations on 35 remarkable years, Karen — and thank you for all that you do! ❤️
Here’s to Cupola and the next chapter! 🥂🎨

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Varnishing Day 2026 ✨

The agony and the ecstasy.

Varnishing Day at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is always a beautiful occasion — even when it rains, as it did this year.

For me, it’s an annual gamble. An exercise in hope.

The submission process is never without its stresses: choosing the work, getting everything right, then waiting and wondering. That’s the agony. The ecstasy comes when that acceptance email finally lands in your inbox.

A wonderful day celebrating art, artists, and the privilege of being part of this extraordinary exhibition.
