It’s #PublicationDay for Professor Rachel Wahl! 🎉 Her new book, "Keeping Our Enemies Closer: Political Dialogue in Polarized Democracies," is officially out today from the University of Pennsylvania Press (@penn_press).

What does it take for a progressive student and a conservative peer to view each other with respect? Can trust form between a police officer and a community member after years of tension and mistrust? At a time when political polarization seems insurmountable, Rachel Wahl offers a rare glimpse into what happens when people with opposing views sit down and talk― not with the goal to debate or “prove” their political point but with the goal to understand the life experiences, hopes, fears, and ideas that drive their disagreements. Drawing on in-depth empirical research with college students, police officers, and community members, this groundbreaking book takes readers inside real-life conversations across ideological, racial, and institutional lines.

Wahl draws on political theory to examine two cases: structured dialogue between students and a series of forums held between officers and community members. Rather than idealizing dialogue, Keeping Our Enemies Closer reveals its complexity―where it succeeds, where it falters, and how it can reshape not just minds, but institutions. Through gripping narratives and rigorous analysis, this book challenges assumptions and offers a new framework for thinking about communication in fractured times. An essential read for educators, activists, and policymakers, Keeping Our Enemies Closer has much to offer anyone seeking to understand how connection is forged―or frayed―in twenty-first-century America.

Congratulations, Rachel!

#HappyPublicationDay to Professor @asaleajani! Her new book, "Fugitive Archives: My Family and the American Myth of Belonging," is out from @algonquinbooks.

Asale Angel-Ajani and her twin, the only Black children in a working-class white family, were shuffled between relatives, coming of age in a country that offered little refuge. Years later, Angel-Ajani dove into the archives, searching for an explanation for her family’s and her country’s contradictions, and for her own unshakeable anger.

What she found were records and stories of her ancestors enslaved and free, Indigenous and white, members of the KKK and Black fugitives of a justice system that was rarely just. How could so much love live alongside such hate and prejudice, within the same family? Forged by the violent systems that rewarded racial terror and segregation, Angel-Ajani’s ancestors built their lives together anyway, on the shaky foundation of love and cognitive dissonance.

Fugitive Archives reveals that we are not a country of strangers split into “us” and “them,” who merely need to get to know each other in order to empathize. We have always been deeply entangled. This story of one family’s grief, betrayal, and courage is a vital exploration of race and class, a map for survival and resistance, and a necessary reckoning―for only when we acknowledge the complex, messy truth of who we are as a country, can we shape a more just future.

Congratulations, Asale!

#HappyPublicationDay to Clinical Psychologist and Founder of Tide Pools, Ben Morsa. His book, "Farewell, Diagnosis: Diffracting Psychoanalysis, Autism, and Assessment," by @bloomsburybooksus is now available.

Farewell Diagnosis examines the material urgencies of autism diagnosis alongside the conceptual and clinical problems that diagnosis can produce. Taking psychoanalysis as both a method and an object of critique, Ben Morsa asks what happens when a discipline defined by curiosity, uncertainty, and attention to psychic life encounters autism.

Drawing on psychoanalysis, feminist science studies, and lived experience, the book approaches autism and assessment not as problems to be solved but as entangled processes to be lived with. It engages the tensions between pathologizing logics and affirming frameworks, between open-ended listening and institutional constraint, and asks what comes after diagnosis, not only in systems of care but in the patient’s internal world.

In a market polarized between pathologization and affirmation, the book advocates for curiosity in the clinical process, particularly about the patient’s inner world. It suspends knowing and defining in favor of dynamism, surprise, and play, tracking the contradictions that emerge when we attend to the sticky, dynamic, relational web of meaning.

Farewell Diagnosis is not a rebuke of diagnosis, whether self or clinical. It respects diagnosis as impactful, even a floor for someone to find their footing. But it also explores how diagnosis can become a ceiling, and argues that breaking through it requires saying farewell to diagnosis as the full story, the complete solution, for any given life.

Congratulations, Ben!

We're happy to share that we're working with @gabrielasotolaveaga on the promotion of her forthcoming book, "The World in a Wheat Field: Mexico, Science, and the Challenge of Ending Global Hunger," to be published by @uc_press.

Gabriela Soto Laveaga is Professor of the History of Science and Antonio Madero Professor for the Study of Mexico at Harvard University, where she also serves as Co-Chair of the Mexico Faculty Committee at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Her work examines how scientific knowledge is produced and circulated across Mexico, India, and the wider Global South, with particular attention to agriculture, public health, medicine, development, land, labor, and the people excluded from official histories. Her forthcoming book, "The World in a Wheat Field: Mexico, Science, and the Challenge of Ending Global Hunger" (University of California Press, 2026), reconstructs the Green Revolution from the Yaqui Valley in Sonora. Drawing on archival research, oral histories, diplomatic records, and visual materials, it shows how Mexican scientists, technicians, farmers, institutions, Indigenous land and water, and Mexico-India connections shaped high-yield wheat and its global circulation. The book also examines the environmental and political consequences of a development model built around irrigation, monoculture, agrochemicals, and unequal access to resources.

More to come!

#HappyPublicationDay to @kerimangis! Her book, "The Essential Ingredient: Remaking Ourselves in Times of Crisis," is now available.

What if the crises of our time are not simply problems to solve—but invitations to transform?

In a world marked by climate catastrophe, political upheaval, social fragmentation, and the erosion of community, many people feel overwhelmed or powerless. We are told to remain hopeful, stay positive, and trust that solutions will emerge. But what if hope alone is not enough?

In "The Essential Ingredient: Remaking Ourselves in Times of Crisis," author and TEDx speaker Keri Mangis argues that the real work of transformation begins elsewhere—within ourselves.

Drawing on Jungian psychology, shadow work, and decades of personal exploration, Mangis reframes crisis as a catalyst for profound personal and collective change. Rather than offering quick fixes or prescriptive formulas, she invites readers into a deeper process of self-reflection, healing, and discovery—one capable of reshaping both individual lives and the culture we inhabit.

Structured as a three-part journey through breakdown, reflection, and rebirth, the book guides readers through the psychological and spiritual terrain that genuine change requires. Along the way, Mangis explores the questions that arise when familiar structures collapse: Who are we when the old stories no longer hold? What does it mean to live awake in a time of cultural upheaval? And how might inner change contribute to rebuilding society itself?

Blending philosophy, psychological insight, and cultural reflection, this book speaks to anyone seeking meaning and direction in uncertain times—offering a clear-eyed look at the hidden patterns that shape our behavior, and the difficult but necessary work of confronting the shadows, both personal and collective, that influence our world.

"The Essential Ingredient" offers something rare: not a promise of easy answers, but an invitation to evolve. The true catalyst for remaking society may be the human being willing to do the inner work first, for we are the essential ingredient.

Congratulations, Keri! Graphic celebrating publication day for Keri Mangis’s book, The Essential Ingredient: Remaking Ourselves in Times of Crisis, featuring the book cover centered on a glowing purple background with the words “Happy Publication Day!” below. by @coriolisco
