Got back into catering with this salon celebrating master Indian textile artisans for @worldshiborinetwork at the Temple of Wings in the Berkeley hills in July!

The org preserves Japanese shibori and other heritage textile techniques from around the world, so lots in common the goal of slow food- a reverence for work created by the human hand, seasonality, locality, and passing down culture through craft🤝

Swipe through if you wanna see some of the menu bringing together some South Asian and Japanese dishes/ingredients/sensibilities! There were a few fun things I tested but had to save for another day: a kakiage/pakora number with some crispy summer veg, and a Bombay mix with fried mochi, sesame, turmeric, and chili😔

Featuring @diasporaco gunpowder podi, chaat masala, Guntur sanam chili, and jaggery, always🤞

yaki imo chaat 🍠🌼sweet potatoes coal-roasted until custardy, dressed up with chaat masala, makrut lime, tamarind date and cilantro mint chutneys, and some blossoms. crossover of one of my favorite street snacks from Delhi, shakarkandi ki chaat, with one of my favorite street snacks from Tokyo, Yaki imo

I think I’m fun to travel with, but I take forever to get food. I can be sort of fussy about where to go, and once we’re there, I will talk upppp the proprietors! Tell me about how you dodged an arranged marriage to come sell gelato, or how you’re anxious your son won’t want to continue the family butchery tradition!

One tends to get some crazy gossip and also free snacks.

Two years ago I started taking portraits of faces and hands while getting to know people who work with food (with permission) and stitched together some of my favorites.

iPhones have this strange double-edged ability to document people while also rendering them invisible as “content.” I hope this leans toward the former to celebrate these cultural stewards!

Give me your tired, your poor, your hungry, your butch chestnut vendors, your romantic chaiwalas, your proud produce shop owners!

I love Maria who made some of the best baklava I’ve eaten, Stefano with his precious olive oil, Haruo-san with his wasabi by the river.

Loving food means loving the people who grow and catch and fry and serve it 🙂‍↕️🌿

Gird your loins!!! Ms. Roan Uong-Pearl and I directed John Patrick Shanley’s Savage in Limbo, and there are a few seats left. It’s a deliciously uncomfortable delightful mess!!! You don’t wanna miss it.
