Sarah Schecter is an Oakland-based cook and writer working in the kitchen at Berkeley’s Chez Panisse. She studied theatre and food studies at UCLA, and received a Fulbright fellowship to pursue a Master’s in World Food Studies at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Italy this coming October.

I was lucky to meet Sarah at Dr. Elizabeth McQueen's Unfiltered lecture. We shared a few stories from the kitchen and discussed food as a form of performance art. One thing led to another and this young culinary force agreed to bring her act to UNFILTERED.

Stop by Sunday for one of Sarah's last stops in Berkeley before she launches to Italy.

Circles, again.
Today I returned to Hakone in Saratoga, CA.
Not just to the garden, but to a place that shaped my life nearly 35 years ago.
When I first visited, I was a young mother living in Stanford's Escondido Village, holding the hand of my son. Hakone seemed so magical, it became one of the reasons I learned to drive. And returned often, sometimes with Heather… It was through her family that I first learned the meaning of Thanksgiving, discovering American traditions through my dear friends.
Today, Sarah and I walked through Sashiko + Kogin, our exhibition at the very place that captivated me long before I got to Japan. Sarah read from the Gallery Guide while we lingered near Reiko Kobata's stitched circles… remembering that circles expand and contract, gathering new stories along the way.
Our visit coincided with John Larissou's Urasenke tea ceremony, adding yet another layer to the exhibition: tea, textiles, memory, friendship, and time.
Perhaps this is what a circular composition looks like in real life.
The visitor becomes a curator.
The garden remains.
And one day, you find yourself standing in the same place, seeing it all again from a different point on the circle.
One week remains to visit Sashiko + Kogin: From Necessity to Artistry at Hakone, with a Closing Reception on 6/14/26 from 11am to 1 pm
