As of today all my children are officially ADULTS! Happy 18th birthday to my wonderful bonus baby @finvonreis 🎂
Finley is truly fun to be with and brings such good conversations to our family’s dinner table. He is adventurous out in the world, always game to jump off great heights into the water or the snow with aplomb! He has a quiet inner confidence And when he plays my great grandmother’s piano I’m filled with happiness not only by the sweet, dulcet sounds but that his playing keeps our ancestors’ memory alive and the piano in use! He also deeply values his friendships and has the best group of friends by his side which makes me feel so grateful. We are all lucky to have him in our lives! Many happy returns of the day, dear Fin, sweet boy of mine. 🎂 by @cornelia.craft

Happy Fall y’all! It’s soup weather again so I made one of my favorites yesterday. I have shared this recipe before but thought why not give it again? It’s simple and delicious. We will miss many things from summer (see the fig in next slide) but autumn offers so much. This soup delivers big flavor while only needing a few ingredients like protein rich red lentils, sweet, earthy beets and a delightful umami tang from umeboshi vinegar that’s balanced by creamy crème fraiche as a garnish. I love a piece of whole grain toast drenched in good olive oil to go with it. It is almost time to order your oils from @freshfromfrantoi 💚
Red Velvet Beet and Lentil Soup

1 tbsp olive oil
1 large red onion or yellow, chopped
1 medium carrot, chopped
3-4 small or medium red beets, peeled and quartered
5 cups water (add more for a thinner soup)
1 cup red lentils, washed and drained

3 bay leaves
4 thyme sprigs
 1 tbsp sea salt
2-3 tbsp umeboshi or red wine vinegar

In a large soup pot, heat the oil, and saute onion until translucent and lightly browned.

Stir in carrots and beets, and saute another 2 minutes. Add water, lentils, bay leaves, thyme sprigs and salt. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, partially covered for 25-30 minutes until beets are softened and lentils are cooked through. Remove thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Puree in small batches in a blender or directly in the pot with an immersion blender. Stir in vinegar. Garnish each serving a dollop of crème fraiche or yogurt and some chopped dill if you have some.
Even though is soup is very red, remember to VOTE BLUE! 🗳️ by @cornelia.craft

It feels like summer is over because today was the first day of school. But oh what a lovely summer it was! I got to spend the first half of August at home in Inverness seeing family and so many dear friends. My girlfriends seemed particularly happy and funny and beautiful this summer and it was a joy to have girl time together. I’m lucky to have friends that I’ve known all my life and traditions that keep us together in the very special place where we grew up. The Point Reyes peninsula and Tomales Bay really are magical. And now I think I’m ready to curl into autumn weather. What about you? Are you ready? 🍂 by @cornelia.craft

Just before summer (for our 25th anniversary! 🥂) we went to Italy and dipped into France for some time together and it was marvelous. We were lucky to have perfect weather before the heatwaves began in June. My heart hurts for anyone suffering through heat and wildfires this summer. I know I am lucky to have had these experiences and I do not take it for granted. I hope you are all safe and I’m sending out lots of love! by @cornelia.craft

Walking. But NOT 10,000 steps a day! I did do that everyday when I first moved here (have always hiked and walked a lot, but never counted steps before that) and I ended up with foot pain that has lasted for the past few years. Many doctors and physical therapists later and I am finally back on the trails again but now I walk just until it feels right. We are all different and have different quotas. I wish I had listened to my body sooner. Even with twinges of aching in my feet I would keep going. If you have had an injury or illness or even exhaustion from keeping going, remember to rest and know that the trails are waiting for you when you’re ready. Take it all in stride so to speak! I feel grateful that my walks are coinciding with thimbleberry season right now! #youareamazing #justkeepswimming #believeinyourself taken in Balch Creek by @cornelia.craft

Daughter is home from college just this week so celebration tiramisu was in order! Perfect for breakfast and dessert. We like to say that tiramisu is like heaven because everyone’s version of it is different. This version is the classic zabaione filled delight completely filling the trifle bowl as well as our appetites. What are you doing these June days as a pick me up?

Pining for pinecones and seashells on this last day of May with a blue moon that will grace the sky tonight and the scent of summer in the air. I’m out at the Summer Block Party with @corecollective.sculpt next to @g.lovepdx selling my nature cast gems. Happy to ship as well if anything catches your eye! I’ll be at the @invernessfair on August 8th too. Hoping June will be good to all of you! by @cornelia.craft

Everything is popping into a bright green. It’s a young green, different than the ancient green of winter’s moss which I also love. And in my tiny yard the black tulips that I planted when we moved in 5 years ago are blooming again. I love green and black together. Spring is so nice. What are you enjoying about it?? 💚 by @cornelia.craft

Today is World Theater Day which seems like the perfect day to announce that I am very proud to be part of an upcoming project with @foxholeprojectsllc called Read My Lips. Our performance will be part of @fertilegroundpdx on April 18 and 25th at @ethosmusicvenue here in Portland. The fertile ground festival features an amazing number of new works and this new play by Jed Sutton is an important piece that highlights Act Up in NYC in the 1980s. The AIDS epidemic hasn’t gone away and back then it devastated my family members so being part of this ensemble feels personally important to me. Come see it! link to tickets in my bio. Our city recently celebrated moss appreciation week and there was even a moss petting zoo at the local college but as it was still wintertime and not easy to leave the house I opted to walk across the street and into my nearby woods to revel in our neighborhood moss. And now as spring is springing we have emerging blooms to accompany the moss whose bright green glory will sadly fade as the days warm and lengthen. When the trees first started to bloom this year I thought, really? Certainly we don’t deserve this. Those in power are not behaving well enough to have flowers bursting out all around! I hope the plants are blooming purely for themselves this year. I guess we could hope that some of the beauty might wear off on us, soften us, remind us that beauty still exists despite the horrors. Might be a good idea to go and touch some moss before it dries! taken in Forest Park by @cornelia.craft

If she hadn’t passed 23 years ago, my mom would have turned 80 today. I miss her all the time and surviving the holidays without her feels the hardest. I think I managed fairly well this year (no major melt downs!) and one thing that may have helped was making these truffles. Chocolate was a huge part of my upbringing. Both parents let us indulge in good chocolate. There was always a 10 pound brick of @guittardchocolate in the pantry and to this day my morning routine is a couple squares of very dark chocolate to which I’ve recently added a warm cup of herbal chai. I find both to be very grounding. And if there’s a moment in time where feeling grounded is important I believe it is now. Grounded and connected to what matters. And what matters is people. People that we know and love as well as those around the globe who need our love.
When I ran out of chai recently I went to the farmer’s market to get more and there was Mahsa and her amazing mother running the @mahsa_chai stall. When I see other women with their moms loving and supporting them it brings me so much joy. Without my own here I just relish seeing moms and daughters so close. I know it’s not always easy but there is something about that bond that’s as deep as earthy dark chocolate.
Over the holidays I brought these
Chocolate Mahsa Chai Truffles to friends that I cherish. (And I still have some in the freezer for when we need more!) Recipe in 1st comment so you can make some too.🤎
Let yourself indulge. My mother would approve! by @cornelia.craft
