Happy September, friends! How are you feeling? Aside from feeling like I might lose my balance at any moment, I’m mostly optimistic about Fall. Falling into rhythms without falling down flat on my face is my goal for the next few weeks! Today is my kids’ first day of school and one way I keep myself from stressing out is to skip getting dressed. Raise your hands mamas and papas if you’ve ever done drop off in your pj’s!? It’s still a pandemic, you really don't have to get dressed. And after drop off, why not just take your walk in the woods in your pajamas too? The trees don't care what you wear! Or do they? Choosing your jammies wisely does happen to have an impact on our precious planet. Garments made with organic cotton keep millions of pounds of pesticides out of our soil, making things safer for farmers and it’s better for your skin too. What I love most about these particular waffle jams (which feel wonderfully comfy on my skin) is not only how environmentally friendly they are, but they are also made by a small, woman owned and run business, but really…this COLOR! MOSS… mossy moss moss! The most marvelous modulation of mother EARTH! Mad amounts of praise to @shopnoble for this creation that launches today.💚🤎
Now all I need is a plate of organic waffles with maple syrup, maybe some foraged berries and whipped cream? My morning would be perfect. 😋🧇😅 But who am I kidding, I barely got the school lunches packed. Breakfast waffles can wait for the weekend. 🍽

Summer means collecting and compounding the fruits of our labors… years of growing and tending trees with the help of Mother Nature. Collecting and cutting and cooking stone fruit grown by my sisters @wildwestferments and @plantharmony is complete bliss for all the senses. Bottled up and preserved into jars of joy! How are you enjoying summer and it’s bounty? #homegrown #jam #plumjam #apricotjam🍑 #stonefruit #preservingfood #summerbounty #slowismyseasonal #jamontoast

Happy December! I am excited to be partnering with @freshfromfrantoi here in Tuscany to tell you that TODAY is the LAST CHANCE TO ORDER the incredible extra virgin olive oils from this year’s extraordinary harvest. They select the top oil producers in Italy and ship directly to you. These oils are far superior to any others I’ve tasted. Delicious super elixir full of antioxidants and unadulterated purity! Extra virgin olive oil is the only vegetable oil that is unprocessed and cold pressed juice that is so good for your health. And it makes a perfect gift so you can keep a bottle or two for yourself and give one to a friend! Let me know if you decide to order or if you have any questions at all! 🍈#frantoi #extravirginoliveoil #giftoflove #toyourhealth #organicoliveoil #perfectgift # shopsmall #dontwaituntilitstoolate #linkinbio

As the days grow shorter and colder it helps to warm ourselves with spiced foods. This is especially true now that huddling with friends and family is limited.
Have you been feeling at all nauseous waiting for election results? Are you feeding yourself well? Here’s my easy recipe with fresh ginger and garlic, which when combined and in particular taken during autumn-winter, is a great way to strengthen the immune system. Ginger and garlic can also help relieve nausea! Below the recipe you can read about all the spice benefits and I highly recommend spices from @burlapandbarrel the legacy of my former boss @floydcardoz 💔
Red Lentil Dahl
4 T coconut or olive oil or ghee
2 tsp cumin seed
2 tsp ground coriander
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp red chili pepper flakes
1/2 tsp tumeric
1+ T grated fresh ginger
4 cloves minced garlic
2 cups red lentils
5 cups water
4 T tomato paste
2 tsp salt
Lemon juice to taste
Heat spices and herbs in oil or ghee until quite fragrant. Add lentils, water, tomato paste, salt. Simmer until cooked through. About 25 minutes. Finish with lemon juice, or a dash of vinegar, perhaps a dollop of plain yogurt.
•Garlic and/or Ginger include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, rheumatologic, blood circulation, anti-cramp, anti-ulcer, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-stress, anti-cancer, immunity booster, anti-diabetic, and regulation of blood pressure. In the winters the metabolism works harder to maintain a comfortable body temperature. Hence our body needs more energy, more nourishing foods. The spices in this Dhal recipe include super anti-oxidants such as •Turmeric which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. It helps detoxify the liver, balance cholesterol levels, fight allergies, stimulate digestion, and enhance the complexion. It increases the production of enzymes that help detoxify the body. It also works to promote healthy liver functioning.
•Cumin is also a warming spice. It aids digestion and helps flush toxins out of the body.
•Coriander whets the appetite, helps combat allergies and also helps purify the blood. ♥️
Warmed in oil to release their aromas these spices create a delicious base for this protein and fiber rich soup.

I was 10 years old in this photo and I saw it for the first time just recently when Mo Hurley who took it posted a photo from the @breadandroses_ca concert where it was taken at the Greek theatre in Berkeley way back when. Her original post was a photo of Robin Willams backstage whom I was watching from the audience here. There’s so much more I can say about Robin! She asked if anyone knew Banana (My father @lowellevinger )so she could get the photo to him and she sweetly said she never forgot talking with me that day, nearly 40 years ago! My dad played accompaniment to Mimi Fariña the founder of Bread and Roses at every music festival and she (may she rest peacefully) had a profound affect on me when I heard her sing the poem written that inspired her amazing organization. In 1912 Women marched and went on strike for better wages and dignified conditions. This struggle still exists! Today is my birthday and I awoke to horrible news of a Supreme Court nomination that is beyond deplorable. I beg you, to PLEASE VOTE! We must keep rising up to fight for what is right and just!
BREAD & ROSES
“As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient song of Bread;
Small art and love and beauty their trudging spirits knew—
Yes, it is Bread we fight for—but we fight for Roses, too.
As we come marching, marching, we bring the Greater Days—
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler—ten that toil where one reposes—
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses.”

Kalein’ it! 🌿 Here’s my favorite kale salad recipe which I’m posting specifically for @wmanwarren the editor of the home/garden magazine I used to write for because when she said she missed my recipes after I’d just landed in Italy, I responded with something along the lines of “I may never cook again!” That was three weeks ago and its true that my arrival (and the stress involved in getting here) had me thinking, I’m here to be fed. Please, Italy, just feed me! But then, I made a batch of sauerkraut. Still waiting as patiently as possible for it to be ready. Next I made a batch of brownies for my son’s birthday. Then I made dark cardamom truffles to take to a ladies gathering alfresco. Next I found myself roasting potatoes and sautéing leeks to go with them and then I put an egg on top. The cravings for familiar things keep creeping in already! Especially for my children. I’m pretty sure some form of tacos or quesadillas will be next but THIS KALE SALAD equals home for them and me. I started making it when they were very young and shared the recipe (let’s face it, it’s barely a recipe- it’s salad dressing!) with their preschool teacher who began to make it for snack time and reported back that the children said, this is like CANDY! And it’s kinda true. Something weirdly magical happens when you mix balsamic with soy sauce. Who knew? My children loved it as toddlers and still do. They say it tastes best if you eat it with your fingers. (Yes, my teenagers still eat like toddlers. Manners be damned!) 🤦🏻‍♀️
This recipe has only 5 ingredients including the kale. Haha, I secretly hate those IG posts that gamely advertise recipes with an ever so small number of ingredients. What’s wrong with ingredients!? They make things taste good. But I get it! Nice to throw something together with things you probably already have in your pantry, especially during a pandemic! So here you go. Squashed squash! This dish is a late summer/early fall favorite that’s perfect when gardens are overflowing with zucchini that beg for more uses. It is easy and satisfying to make as well as very satisfying to eat. My dad, @lowelllevinger who believes strongly in equal rights for everyone, made this recipe up, and would likely agree that while you squish up the pieces of softened courgettes, you can also imagine the squashing of the patriarchy! Our patriarchal society hasn’t made for great outcomes over the past few millennia. Very satisfying indeed to squash it out and try our best to create meaningful, lasting change! Maybe we ought to call this dish “Dad’s Squash the Patriarchy”!? To make: Grate and set aside a large pile of Parmesan cheese that will be added last. Next, cut up a few zucchini into large chunks and sauté them slowly in olive oil along with a generous handful of sliced onions over medium heat. Put a lid on it if they need to steam down a bit. Once they’re well softened squash them with the back of a large fork or a potato masher. Press in a clove or two or three of garlic. Remember some salt! And pepper if you like. Once you have a well sautéed squashed up mash of squash, add a dash of heavy cream and your parmigiana cheese that’s been waiting patiently nearby. Serve immediately with some diced scallions or chives as garnish. Et Voilà! Perfect side dish or even main course if you put an egg on it! 😋📷 @garypaynephotography beautiful shallow bowl @clayandcraftco
