Grammy Nominated Producer/Songwriter, @cornelio_austin & VP of AR at @spiritmusicgroup, @nancy.matalon share with the artist the modern day reality of receiving a platinum record.

Before the rise of music streaming platforms, a record’s potential to achieve platinum status was determined by its physical sales in music stores.

This system allowed music artists, record labels, and songwriters to more accurately estimate their earnings and achieve platinum status in a relatively short timeframe.

However, the landscape of the music industry has shifted dramatically. Today, the success of a record is largely measured by its performance on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

As a result, many newer music artists face significant challenges in reaching platinum status.

Unlike in the past, where record sales provided a clear path, streaming metrics have made it more difficult for emerging artists to reach this milestone.

Cornelio explains that it’s estimated an artist needs approximately 1.5 billion streams on their original music to achieve platinum certification.

For many newer artists, especially those just entering the music business, this is often an unattainable feat, leaving them struggling to match the success of artists in the pre-streaming era.

Reposted @cornelio_austin 9th Grade.... 👇🏾- I remember when I first learned how to play "Lady" we used to loop this at church and "When We Get By". Back when Music had more than three chords! Majority of creators today don't know what it is to make timeless music mainly because they don't know who to study. D'Angelo was a student who gave tribute to the greats and for the generation who grew up on his music, we are all students and it's our job to also teach this next generation how to be great. Much love to his children and to all of us who are affected by this great loss. I'm still listening to these albums and just enamored by what I hear, the mix, instrumentation and spirituality.
