Angelina Tang '28 spent her summer as a Cornell Cooperative Extension intern at the Cornell Biological Field Station near Syracuse, New York. During her internship, she harnessed her love of animals and her expertise in communications to work toward grassroots conservation of the common tern.

This bird is growing uncommon across inland North America. Human disturbance, habitat degradation and increased predation of eggs and chicks have lowered nesting success, and some colony populations have declines by 75%.

But at Oneida Lake, a tern breeding ground, Angelina worked to educate the local community about the dangers the terns face and the need for conservation. Not only that, but she helped local people understand what they could do to make a difference for the terns’ breeding success!

Cornell VAW is a pre-veterinary club allowing Ansci students to travel abroad and gain hands-on experience practicing veterinary medicine. This summer, club members travelled to Peru to provide low-income communities with veterinary care. They gained hands-on experience offering physical exams, vaccines, and spays and neuters for cats and dogs belonging to low-income families.

Students also performed health assessments for llamas, monkeys, wild cats, parrots, and more at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Along the way, they immersed themselves in Peruvian culture and brushed up on their Spanish speaking skills.

Every summer, VAW offers students a life-changing experience while making a difference in various underserved communities around the world. For pre-vet student Julian de Vlieger ’29, this trip helped solidify his career path.

“Before this trip I wasn’t sure if veterinary medicine was the path for me, but my experiences in Peru solidified my passion and confirmed without a doubt that this is the career I want to pursue,” he said.

We're spotlighting a very unique program at CALS: The Cornell Raptor Program (CRP)! 🦅 @cornellraptorprogram

The CRP is an undergraduate program within the Animal Science department (@cornellansci). Undergraduates feed, train, and care for over 20 captive, non-releasable birds of prey. These birds can no longer survive in the wild and take on a new life as an education ambassador for their species. Students present birds at education programs to teach the surrounding community about raptors, native wildlife, and conservation.

The CRP is unique among university raptor centers in the United States for giving undergraduates the privilege to work with raptors. Most raptor centers are geared towards veterinary students, or only professionals are allowed to handle the birds directly. To join the CRP, students must take two half-semester courses (ANSC 3200 and ANSC 1130) offered in the spring semester. These courses provide training to safely work with raptors, preparing students to handle them in a safe, low-stress environment.

If you have any questions, feel free to DM @cornellraptorprogram on Instagram or email the program director, Dr. Heather Huson, at hjh3@cornell.edu. by @cornellansci

Students for Animals in Shelters supports local animal shelters through volunteering, fundraising, and outreach to adopters. Kaylin Barefoot ’26 founded SAS after she began volunteering at the SPCA in Tompkins County, New York, and noticed a lack of undergraduate involvement.

“I wanted students to get excited about shelter med,” Barefoot said. Thus, SAS was born, and now their students volunteer every week at the SPCA.

SAS also works with Browncoat Cat Rescue, Chemung County SPCA and Shelter Outreach Services, which is a spay and neuter clinic serving the greater Ithaca area. They have previously done fundraisers for these shelters and assisted staff during spay and neuter clinics, which shelters provide as a preventative for overpopulation and to improve animal health.

To learn more about SAS’s involvement in local shelters, read the full article linked in our bio.

If there’s someone that every animal science student knows, it would be Jeremy Allen, senior lecturer and director of undergraduate studies. And that’s for the better — from teaching to advising, Allen values helping students above all else.

“My favorite part of my role is when I see a student who’s been struggling to understand something finally understand it, and that light bulb goes off,” he said.

Allen teaches BIOAP 1100: Domestic Animal Physiology, which first-year undergraduates entering the major usually take in the fall, as well as ANSC 2400: Biology of Reproduction. Both are required core courses for the animal science major. BIOAP 1100 is notoriously difficult for many, which Allen recognizes, and he aims to support students as they navigate his course while transitioning into college life.

To learn more about Allen, read the article linked in our bio.
