Does TSPO contribute to adipocyte lipid homeostasis under metabolic stress? A new study leverages a multifaceted experimental strategy involving global Tspo knockout (Tspo−/−) mice, primary adipocyte cultures, and pharmacological interventions to dissect the role of TSPO in adipocyte lipid metabolism. The findings suggest a previously unrecognized role for TSPO in modulating adipocyte lipid metabolism via a protoporphyrin IX (PPIX)-dependent mechanism. Read the research, linked in our bio! How do you get a community to care about a bird they may know little about? Angie Tang ’28, a communication and animal science student in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, spent her summer as a Cornell Cooperative Extension summer intern at the Cornell Biological Field Station near Syracuse, helping more people discover the common terns of Oneida Lake. Angie created educational resources, visited schools and summer camps, connected with local businesses and helped launch “A Tern in Every Town” — a scavenger hunt featuring 3-D printed tern figurines placed around the lake. Through her outreach, Angie reached more than 15,000 people, building awareness of a species whose numbers have declined dramatically and whose nesting habitat continues to shrink. Along the way, she found inspiration in the terns themselves and their determination to keep trying, even after storms destroyed many of their nests. Thank you to Angie for her work this summer and for her contributions to common tern conservation! We're spotlighting a very unique program at CALS: The Cornell Raptor Program (CRP)! 🦅 @cornellraptorprogram The CRP is an undergraduate program within the Animal Science department (@cornellansci). Undergraduates feed, train, and care for over 20 captive, non-releasable birds of prey. These birds can no longer survive in the wild and take on a new life as an education ambassador for their species. Students present birds at education programs to teach the surrounding community about raptors, native wildlife, and conservation. The CRP is unique among university raptor centers in the United States for giving undergraduates the privilege to work with raptors. Most raptor centers are geared towards veterinary students, or only professionals are allowed to handle the birds directly. To join the CRP, students must take two half-semester courses (ANSC 3200 and ANSC 1130) offered in the spring semester. These courses provide training to safely work with raptors, preparing students to handle them in a safe, low-stress environment. If you have any questions, feel free to DM @cornellraptorprogram on Instagram or email the program director, Dr. Heather Huson, at hjh3@cornell.edu.

🦒 What does it take to meal-prep for a giraffe? As an Animal Nutrition Intern at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Arianna D. Edinbugh, a junior studying animal science, spent her summer learning how diets are formulated and maintained for zoo animals of all kinds. By conducting research based on species-specific nutritional needs, she gained hands-on experience collecting and analyzing feed data, monitoring body condition scoring and evaluating nutrient content to help inform diet plans. Arianna also completed projects and reports on a variety of species, including Patagonian maras, southern sea otters, keel-billed toucans and little blue penguins. Her findings were shared with nutritionists and zookeepers across the country. “This experience made me more passionate about a career in animal nutrition, especially working with zoo and exotic animals.” How did Arianna land this wild internship? Arianna began her search for summer internships in fall 2025. She looked for opportunities online that focused on animal nutrition and research, which aligned with her career goals. When applying to this internship, Arianna worked with the CALS career services team to fine-tune her cover letter and prepare for her interview. Arianna feeding giraffes

Pilar Gamage ‘29, an animal science major from Saratoga, New York, reflects on her first year at CALS. 🌟 🔺 Why did you choose Cornell CALS? I chose Cornell CALS for the opportunities in animal science. CALS offers hands-on learning opportunities through research, courses and internships, all while gaining real-world experience. Cornell also has a strong dairy program that connects students with countless opportunities for growth and development, allowing me to learn more from industry professionals, participate in cutting-edge research and receive more hands-on training with animals. These experiences will help me build the skills and knowledge I need to succeed in the future. 🔺 Looking back over your freshman year at CALS, which classes or experiences were most meaningful? Several courses and experiences were incredibly meaningful to me. Courses like Domestic Animal Biology and Dairy Cattle Principles helped shape my understanding of animal science, and working in a dairy research lab gave me hands-on experience assisting with studies on dairy cattle health, which aligns with my interests. Additionally, I had the opportunity to participate in the dairy study trip to the Central Valley of California to learn more about various aspects of agriculture. This was a great experience that allowed me to apply the knowledge I gained in the classroom in a real-world situation. 🔺 What kind of research are you interested in? I am particularly interested in dairy science research that focuses on nutrition during the transition cow period, which is the three weeks before and after a cow has her calf. During this time cows experience significant metabolic changes. Optimizing nutrition during this period can improve animal health, milk production, and overall welfare. I'm interested in research that focuses on dietary strategies, nutrient balancing, and improving metabolic health during this period because it can significantly reduce disease and illness risk during a cow's lactation.

Tracking marine biodiversity and dietary quality in Timor-Leste 🌊 Preventing Nipah virus spillover in India 🦇 Supporting communities and avian scavenger conservation in South Asia 🦅 Monitoring Arctic wildlife health through Indigenous partnerships ❄️ Strengthening wildlife disease surveillance in the Galápagos 🐢 These efforts are at the heart of five new research projects funded by the Catalyzing Conservation Fund (CCF), a grant program by the Cornell K. Lisa Yang Center for Wildlife Health. The CCF provides catalytic seed funding to spark pioneering applied research to advance wildlife conservation solutions. The fund prioritizes initiatives that improve the health of free-ranging wildlife and/or solve environmental problems via a One Health lens. By providing essential early-stage support, the CCF program helps launch strategic collaborations positioned to translate research into practical conservation action for wildlife and wild places. Congratulations to this year’s awardees! Learn more by visiting the link in our bio.
