Denim was once made for labor. Today, it walks the runway. What changed?

Now on view at Catherwood Library, “Weathering the Storm: The Role of Labor in an Era of Climate Change” explores the connections between clothing, labor history, and environmental change through historical photographs, environmental reports, and garments selected by Cornell students.

Featuring archival materials from the Kheel Center (@kheelcenter) at the ILR School (@cornellilr) and garments from the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection (@cornellhumec), the exhibit traces the evolution of workwear, from red bandanas worn by striking coal miners to clothing that has become everyday fashion and luxury.

On view through August 2027.

The ILR School recently published its sixth annual New York at Work report. 📈 This year’s report features data and insights on such topics as: mental health support for construction workers, workplace discrimination, disability and justice-impacted employment, the impacts of unpaid caregiving work, employment in Erie County, TPS workers, and climate jobs and clean energy.

Established by the New York State Legislature in 1945 to address the great workplace conflicts of the day, the ILR School is guided by a commitment to social and economic justice and to improving the lives of New York’s working people. The annual New York at Work report draws on ILR expertise, research-based data and policy analysis on a broad range of key issues affecting the state’s workers, unions, communities and employers. It is intended to serve as an informative, accessible and relevant resource for policymakers and the public.

Included in these infographics are a few takeaways from research findings and public initiatives. You can read the full report via the link in bio or the QR code in the last slide. by @cornellilr

REALTalk 2026’s theme of “Finding Your Inner Strength” explores ways to strengthen resolve when faced with exceptionally challenging situations—whether at school, at work, or at home. The panel features two inspirational Cornell alumnae—Lydia Anglin Grant (Cornell ILR ‘18 & UPenn JD/MBA ’23) and Angela Lu (Cornell ILR ‘13 & WashU MBA ’19)—who leverage their inner strength during moments of self-doubt, frustration, or insurmountable odds. They will share candid personal stories and insights on how to conjure resilience, regroup after setbacks, combat imposter syndrome, and manage uncertainty.

Lydia Anglin Grant is a Sustainability attorney at Kirkland & Ellis advising clients on ESG, strategy, and compliance. Her career is shaped by pursuing opportunities before feeling fully ready. At Cornell, she founded the Black Ivy Pre-Law Society (featured in Teen Vogue), interned on Wall Street and in the Obama Administration, lobbied Congress twice on financial aid, and supports women and people of color. A Houston native and daughter of Jamaican immigrants, her journey has taught her to bet on herself. Outside of work, Lydia travels, mentors, and hikes with her husband, Scott, and dog, Logan.

Angela Lu is a strategy consultant for Acumetis, leading cross-functional engagements for life sciences and biopharma clients. At Cornell, she was involved with the Forensics Society, faQ Online, and The Advocacy Center. Born in Canada and raised in Hong Kong, her post-Cornell journey spans 7 cities and 3 countries. An aspiring US immigrant, her strong resolve helps her shake culturally ingrained social comparison. She serves as president of the LGBTQIA+ Alumni Association of Cornell (Cornell Pride). Outside of work, Angela re-energizes by crocheting and playing pickleball.

REALTalk is an annual speaker series presented by the Cornell Gender Equity Resource Center and supported by an endowment from the Cornell chapter of Delta Gamma (DG). Its mission is to present Relatable, Empowering, Authentic Leaders sharing candid stories to engage, inspire, and enhance the mental health of women and gender-expansive students.

A Hard Hat. A Conversation. A Connection That Matters.
“If you need to talk to somebody… I’m here for you.”

In this ULA Network interview, Thomas Ryan of Carpenters Local 157, New York City District Council of Carpenters, shares a meaningful reminder: you don’t have to carry life’s challenges alone.

As a peer, Thomas offers a listening ear and an invitation to connect. That sticker on his hard hat can be the starting point for a conversation someone has been waiting to have.
ULA Network is proud to support efforts across the NYC building and construction trades to organize peer support, break the stigma surrounding mental health, and strengthen suicide awareness and prevention. Looking out for one another extends beyond the work we do—it includes how we’re doing.

Thank you, Thomas, and all the members helping make these conversations possible. Watch, share, and check in with someone today. Asking for support is a sign of strength.

For the first time in over a decade, garments from fashion designer Ralph Rucci’s atelier collections have been brought together under one roof as part of the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection (CF+TC) at @cornellhumec.

Documentary materials, including thousands of original sketches, patterns and swatches, are housed by the @kheelcenter at @cornell_library. The collection includes 125 cubic feet of paper materials: approximately 8,000 sketches, 3,000 patterns, thousands of fabric swatches and hundreds of photographs.

📝 The archive is accessible to students, researchers and the public, ensuring Rucci’s legacy lives on and inspires future generations of designers.

“One can see the evolution of ideas from Rucci’s sketches with handwritten notes appended with feathers, fabrics and color schemes in the Kheel Center to the final garments in Cornell’s Fashion and Textile Collection,” said Steven Calco, head of the Kheel Center. “Studying the design from inception to execution will be invaluable for students learning these fashion design skills at Cornell and the profession at large. Preserving these records ensures students and future researchers can study the relationship between design, craft, labor and production in the fashion and textile industries.”

Turning Personal Experience Into Action — Sean Houlihan, Ironworkers Local 40
For Sean Houlihan of Ironworkers Local 40, becoming a Peer Support Advocate is deeply personal.

After being encouraged to get involved by his MAP Director Jim Dufficy , Sean immediately thought about his mother, who lost two brothers to suicide at a young age. He has seen how the loss of one person can affect an entire family for years — and that experience became part of his motivation to help others before they ever reach that point.

Sean’s message is an important reminder that peer support is about more than recognizing someone who may be struggling. It is about creating a culture where union brothers and sisters know they do not have to struggle in silence and where trained peers are prepared to listen, connect and support someone when they may need it most.
Sean also speaks openly about having faced struggles of his own and the importance of having good people in his life who helped guide him forward. Now, through the Peer Support Network, he has an opportunity to be that person for someone else.

As Sean said, the work may be difficult to talk about, but taking action can save lives — and can prevent families, spouses, children, friends and coworkers from experiencing the devastating loss that follows suicide.

If this program helps save even one person, the training, conversations and commitment are worth it.

The ULA Network and ULA Network Charitable Foundation are proud to support, educate and promote initiatives that bring mental health awareness, peer support and meaningful resources directly into the union construction community.

Congratulations to Sean and all of the newly trained Peer Support Advocates who are stepping forward to help their brothers and sisters.

The ILR School is excited to announce that the Buffalo Co-Lab has received a generous donation to fund its High Road Buffalo Fellowship program for the next five years. 👏

The gift from Jim Miller ’88 and his partner at Miller Shah LLP, James C. Shah, will support the entire program, and the majority of the funding will subsidize student fellows’ salaries.

Miller's own undergraduate experiences at ILR inspired him to pursue a career in law, and he has been a long-time supporter of the ILR School and its students. Over the past 15 years, he has hired more than 150 ILRies through the Miller Shah Credit Internship program.

“I’m thankful in many ways for Jim Miller,” says Cathy Creighton ’87, executive director of the Buffalo Co-Lab. “His commitment to ILR students has been extraordinary throughout his career, and this is just the latest example of his generosity and love for the ILR School. All these opportunities created by Jim are incredibly important for both our students and for working people.”

IT’S NOT WEAK TO SPEAK.

In this powerful interview, Arianna Schindle of Cornell University’s ILR School Worker Institute and the Building Trades Peer Support Network (BTPSN) shares the mission behind an initiative helping change the culture around mental health and peer support in the union construction industry.

The BTPSN brings together Cornell’s Worker Institute, the Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, affiliated unions, MAP directors, trainers, and trained peer supporters to help union members recognize when someone may be struggling, listen without judgment, and connect them with meaningful resources.

Following the recent BTPSN Graduation and Appreciation Ceremony, this growing network is bringing trained peer support directly into union halls, training centers, and jobsites.

The ULA Network and ULA Network Charitable Foundation are proud to
Support • Educate • Promote this life-changing initiative.

We encourage union locals, contractors, apprenticeship programs, and industry partners to get involved.
