Meet Angela, one of our amazing speakers for REALTalk, happening this Thursday at 7PM in Sage Chapel! Desserts and drinks offered! PHC members can earn a give point for this event too!

Angela Lu (Cornell ILR ‘13 & WashU MBA ‘19) is a strategy consultant for Acumetis, an international firm offering their expertise to life sciences and biopharma clients. Angela leads cross-functional engagements to diagnose root causes of her clients’ complex issues and to build strategic systems to address them. While at Cornell, she was actively involved with the Forensics Society (speech & debate), faQ Online, and The Advocacy Center. Angela was born in Canada and grew up in Hong Kong where her parents still reside. She first came to the US to attend Cornell, and since leaving Ithaca, her personal journey has spanned 7 cities and 3 countries. She is an aspiring US immigrant who blends in so well most people assume she grew up in the US. Her strong resolve helps her continually shake her culturally ingrained habit of social comparison when her inner critic pipes up. She currently serves as the president of the LGBTQIA+ Alumni Association of Cornell (aka Cornell Pride). Outside of work, Angela clears her mind and re-energizes by crocheting and playing pickleball.

Meet Lydia, one of our wonderful speakers for REALTalk, happening Thursday, October 22nd at 7PM in Sage Chapel!

Lydia Anglin Grant (Cornell ILR ‘18 & UPenn JD/MBA ’23) is an attorney in the Sustainability Practice Group at Kirkland & Ellis, where she advises clients on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters, sustainability strategy, and regulatory compliance. Lydia’s career has been shaped by her willingness to pursue opportunities before she felt fully ready for them and the resilience to keep going when the path was anything but straightforward. While at Cornell, she founded the Black Ivy Pre-Law Society, which was featured in Teen Vogue, interned on Wall Street and in the Obama Administration; twice lobbied Congress on student federal financial aid policy; and supported numerous organizations advancing the professional and leadership development of women and people of color. A Houston native and the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, her journey has taught her that resilience means betting on herself when the path ahead is uncertain and believing there is always more to come. Outside of work, Lydia has a passion for traveling the world, mentoring the #girlies, and hiking with her husband, Scott, and their dog, Logan.

At their best, labor unions represent a confluence of values that challenge entrenched power, both in business and government. In this clip from our most recent episode of City Works, Professor of Labor History at @cornellilr Paul Ortiz explains how this has consistently made unions, and public sector unions in particular, a target.

Denim was once made for labor. Today, it walks the runway. What changed?

Now on view at Catherwood Library, “Weathering the Storm: The Role of Labor in an Era of Climate Change” explores the connections between clothing, labor history, and environmental change through historical photographs, environmental reports, and garments selected by Cornell students.

Featuring archival materials from the Kheel Center (@kheelcenter) at the ILR School (@cornellilr) and garments from the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection (@cornellhumec), the exhibit traces the evolution of workwear, from red bandanas worn by striking coal miners to clothing that has become everyday fashion and luxury.

On view through August 2027.

A new report from the Climate Jobs Institute at Cornell University shows how New York can address the climate and affordability crises by taking an entirely new approach to updating homes. By doing the work at neighborhood-scale, the state can go big on emissions reductions, save homeowners and ratepayers money, and unlock a generation of good union jobs.

“We all want to have a path forward that creates good jobs, brings down carbon emissions and is good for the environment, and brings down rates,” said Brendan Griffith, president of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

Every Trade Looks Out for One Another.

That’s the message Eric McIntire, MAP coordinator for Local 78 & 79 and MasonTenders District Council, shares about the NYC Building Trades Peer Support Network. Ironworkers can help Laborers. Laborers can help Electricians. All Across the trades, members are learning to recognize when someone needs support and to reach out.

Thank you to Eric, the Membership Assistance Program, the NYC Building and Construction Trades, New York Building Congress and Cornell’s Worker Institute for helping build a stronger culture of care. Asking for help takes strength. Offering it can make a difference.

Union members can turn to MAP for free, confidential help with drug- and alcohol and/or mental health concerns.

To connect with the program, contact Eric McIntire at (917) 613-3641 or mailto:ericm@lhl-usa.com. Let’s keep looking out for the people working beside us. It’s not weak to speak.

A Hard Hat. A Conversation. A Connection That Matters.
“If you need to talk to somebody… I’m here for you.”

In this ULA Network interview, Thomas Ryan of Carpenters Local 157, New York City District Council of Carpenters, shares a meaningful reminder: you don’t have to carry life’s challenges alone.

As a peer, Thomas offers a listening ear and an invitation to connect. That sticker on his hard hat can be the starting point for a conversation someone has been waiting to have.
ULA Network is proud to support efforts across the NYC building and construction trades to organize peer support, break the stigma surrounding mental health, and strengthen suicide awareness and prevention. Looking out for one another extends beyond the work we do—it includes how we’re doing.

Thank you, Thomas, and all the members helping make these conversations possible. Watch, share, and check in with someone today. Asking for support is a sign of strength.

🐻♻️ Cornell ILR Climate Jobs Institute releases a new report for Climate Week, on the decarbonization of homes in New York, and the union labor that drives it!!

there's so much to improve for homes, from solar generation to heat retention, and I'm so impressed by ILR in creating a holistic report, everything from the heat pump science, energy economics, labor skills training, and bringing the right policy makers to pass it into law!

climate is a complex topic, and ILR Climate Jobs Institute brings so much clarity!! I wore my 3 year old Climate Jobs Institute tshirt that I got at the kickoff 3 years ago, it's incredible to see the amazing work over the years!!!
