Meet our new Graduate Student, Matvey Agranovskiy!

Matvey Agranovskiy is a Ph.D. student in Romance Studies (French). He holds a bachelor’s degree with highest honors in Comparative Literature and Philosophy from Brandeis University. His senior thesis, Dialectical Annihilation in War and Death: G. W. F. Hegel’s Absolute Negation in the 1930s–40s Writings of Alexandre Kojève and Georges Bataille, drew on the unpublished Russian manuscripts of Alexandre Kojève, preserved at the archives of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

His research lies at the intersection of European modern and contemporary philosophy, literature, and intellectual history. More broadly, his academic interests include the fine arts, cinema studies, and the relationship between technology and thought.

His work has appeared in Triple Ampersand Journal. Beyond his academic research, he has worked on a variety of projects in New York City, including an assistantship with artist Marc Hundley and contributions to the research for the biopic about Bill T. Jones, working with editor and filmmaker Alla Kovgan. by @cornellroms

Cine Con Cultura continues this Thursday, 9/24, at 6pm with UN POETA, an acclaimed dark comedy from Colombia!

Middle-aged and erratic, Oscar is a failed writer who has given up on life. Unemployed and living with family, he wanders the streets of Medellín in a drunken stupor, lamenting the state of literature in his home country, where he has succumbed to the cliché of the tortured artist. However, the opportunity to mentor a young student named Yurlady offers a chance at redemption — if he doesn’t screw it up first.

In a performance marked by darkly comic pathos, first-time actor Ubeimar Rios stars in Simón Mesa Soto’s Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Prize-winner UN POETA, a raw and riotous farce about how good deeds are often met with the universe’s idea of cruel and unusually poetic punishment.

Free admission! The film will be introduced by Tatiana Bedoya, PhD candidate in the Department of Romance Studies. @cornellroms

Sponsored by Cine Con Cultura 2026, Ithaca's annual Latinx Heritage Month film festival, the Department of Romance Studies, and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program.

The screening is also presented in collaboration with the Colombian Graduate Student Association.

Cine Con Cultura is organized by Cultura Ithaca! and Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County in collaboration with Ithaca College, Cornell Cinema, and the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell. taken in Cornell Cinema by @cornellroms

Prof. Sánchez Prado's areas of research include Latin American literature from the 19th to the 21st century, film and media studies, food studies and cultural studies writ large, with a particular focus on modern Mexico. His work concerns the intersections between institutions, aesthetics and ideology, and draws from a wide range of methodologies ranging from the legacies of the Birmingham Center for Cultural Studies and the Frankfurt School to Bourdieusian sociology and Latin American sociocriticism. by @cornellroms

TODAY! Valeria's joy at becoming a first-time mother is quickly taken away when she's cursed by a sinister entity. As domestic expectations, buried desire, and supernatural visitations begin to mount, her marriage, identity, and sense of bodily control collapse, forcing her deeper into a chilling world of dark magic that threatens to consume her.

A debut feature from Mexican director Michelle Garza Cervera, Huesera: The Bone Woman is a shadowy and spine-chilling take on the body horror genre that explores motherhood as a transformative—and terrifying—experience.

Filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera will join for a post-screening conversation Ignacio Sánchez Prado, Emerson Hinchliff Professor of Hispanic Studies in the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell. by @cornellroms
