Cine Con Cultura continues this Thursday, 9/24, at 6pm with UN POETA, an acclaimed dark comedy from Colombia!

Middle-aged and erratic, Oscar is a failed writer who has given up on life. Unemployed and living with family, he wanders the streets of Medellín in a drunken stupor, lamenting the state of literature in his home country, where he has succumbed to the cliché of the tortured artist. However, the opportunity to mentor a young student named Yurlady offers a chance at redemption — if he doesn’t screw it up first.

In a performance marked by darkly comic pathos, first-time actor Ubeimar Rios stars in Simón Mesa Soto’s Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Prize-winner UN POETA, a raw and riotous farce about how good deeds are often met with the universe’s idea of cruel and unusually poetic punishment.

Free admission! The film will be introduced by Tatiana Bedoya, PhD candidate in the Department of Romance Studies. @cornellroms

Pens and sketchbooks in hand, the students learned how to pay attention to the even smallest details and tried their hand at the art of sketching. Filmmaker Juan Cavestany will join for a post-screening conversation with Cecelia Lawless, Senior Lecturer of Spanish Language and Literature in the Department of Romance Studies.

Free admission! Sponsored by the Department of Romance Studies.

Jena Luc Godard's A WOMAN IS A WOMAN screens at Cornell Cinema tonight (3/20) at 8:30pm!

Anna Karina stars as Angela, a young dancer who wants to have a baby, but finds her boyfriend Émile (Jean-Claude Brialy) an unwilling participant. Instead, she goes to his friend Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo) for assistance, proving the lengths to which she'll go to realize her dream of motherhood.

A WOMAN IS A WOMAN is a cinephile's dream film, festooned with enough eccentric musical moments to satisfy the most avant of gardists, including a Charles Aznavour song almost arbitrarily rocketing on and off the soundtrack and Michel Legrand's pre-Umbrellas of Cherbourg score thundering into split-second breaks in dialogue, cinematic in-jokes galore, and plenty of anarchic humor.

This clever and lighthearted French New Wave film won a jury prize from the Berlin Film Festival for its "originality, youth, audacity and impertinence," while the enchanting Karina (in her first major role) was named Best Actress.

The screening will be introduced by Marie-Claire Hoferer, PhD student in the Department of Romance Studies. @cornellroms

Our annual French Film Festival is supported by Albertine Cinémathèque and presented in collaboration with the Department of Romance Studies.

Albertine Cinémathèque is part of the French For All initiative by Villa Albertine – The French Institute for Culture and Education, and Albertine Foundation, and is made possible with the support from the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée (CNC).

The film screens in a 4K digital restoration produced from the original 35mm negative and sound negative. It was scanned in 4K by Hiventy, then color-graded and digitally cleaned to remove imperfections in the original elements. The restoration was completed thanks to the support of the CNC and supervised by Studiocanal’s Sophie Boyer and Jean-Pierre Boiget.

The students discovered the talents and craftsmanship that have contributed to the worldwide appreciation of Italian fashion. ✨

A special thanks to Nicholas Svendsen (BCSP Spring 2026, Indiana University), an aspiring film director and producer, for capturing moments throughout the day and for editing this reel! 🎬

Nicholas Naill (BCSP Spring 2026, University of Illinois) commented: “I really liked seeing the footage from the first runway shows of the early 1950’s held in Palazzo Pitti’s Sala Bianca.”
