Cornell Seismic Design is an undergraduate project team that designs, builds, and tests a multi-story balsa wood tower for an international seismic design competition.

This July, Cornell Seismic Design competed against more than 50 university teams from around the world at the 2026 EERI Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition in Portland, Oregon.
As part of the 13th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering, we presented our architectural, structural, and seismic design to a panel of industry experts before putting our tower to the test under simulated ground motions.
We finished 8th overall, placing 6th in Architecture and top ten in both Design Proposal and Damper.
Proud of what this team designed, built, and accomplished. by @cornellseismicdesign

Crazy motion on day three of comp!

Yesterday, our tower survived its last and hardest test: Portland GM2, a secret ground motion that we designed the tower to withstand. We also chatted with some amazing teams and caught up with old competition friends. by @cornellseismicdesign
