For the third installment of the SDC Top 10 Spotlight Series, we spoke with Hayden and Andrew from Cornell University, whose team placed 8th at the 2025 SDC. They discussed what they have learned over multiple competitions, shared some of the fun and unique aspects of their team, and explained how they are building on those lessons as they prepare for what comes next.

Crowdfunding Day 22: Highlighting our Structural Design Teams

Shake day was intense; love, loss, and learning. We gave our best and led with our hearts. We are so thankful for the support we received from all our new friends. Our tower made it through the first earthquake and fell to the second. We learned so much from our failure (of our shear walls) and will come back stronger!

Despite the crumbling of our tower, we won big. The true victory we found was the friends we made along the way.

Congratulations to Cornell Seismic Design, who recently competed at the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute’s 2024 Seismic Design Competition in Seattle, Washington. Every year they send a balsa wood tower to undergo simulated earthquake ground motions, along with an architectural render, presentation, and poster.

@cornellseismicdesign earned First Place for best overall performance at competition and the Communication Award for best presentation, poster, and proposal! Congratulations!
