Mini Autumn Update 15th Oct 6pm Ceramicist, Dressmaker, Jeweller, Art Historian…lover of stuff. 😊

I’ll be bringing the first of these up to Birmingham with me this weekend for the @guthrieghani Sewcial. A couple of these were testers so will be priced accordingly but the others will be available in my main update in November. I’ve loved making these even though they are time suckers so I’m really hoping they go well. I have more of the LB Pullovers and Sanda jackets in the kiln. A two day firing keeps you on your toes with worry that things will fire well 🤞🏼The cooling process can’t be rushed but it’s a clock watching exercise. I don’t crack the kiln open until it’s at least 60 degrees as the shock to the elements is bad.

Not finished yet but can I say that I’m very pleased with these dress sculptures. In fact I’m ‘landed’ as we say in South Wales. I will bring these to Birmingham at the weekend and they will be in my shop mid Nov for my main update before Christmas.

In other news I’m still recovering from the jolly japes at the weekend and thrilled to be part of this sewing community. I’ve made good friends over the years and I value them enormously, I am so lucky.

I did have a little moment in this exhibition 🥹 I adore Hans Coper’s and Lucie Rie’s work. I had the chance to buy a piece of Rie’s work in the 80s but I didn’t have £200 then. It would be about £200,000 now. I did enquire about some of the prices as some of the pieces were for sale. It was £12,000 for a button. I would have if I could have.
Hans Coper’s work makes me go weak at the knees. The sculptural shapes and surfaces are so precise. There are ceramicist now who are trying to emulate Rie and Coper’s work and aren’t anywhere near them.
A wonderful collection at @offerwaterman I thoroughly recommend it. #ceramics #lucierie #hanscoper #ceramicsofinstagram #makers by @corriesfancygoods

We Frocktailed really well tonight (see stories) I’m wearing a cocoon top by @naniiro_textile and drop crotch trousers by @sewtinagivens the bag is very old @butlerandwilson the necklace I’ve had for over 20 years. Shoes are M&S and the fabric is tencel from @merchantandmills
A great night was had by all, the venue was overlooking the Thames with a view of St Paul’s Catherdral. It was so well organised by @susanyoungsewing @sewthreadbear and @ooobop Sewing is a lone sport so to bring a community together is a joy and a gift. Thank you 🥰 by @corriesfancygoods

What a lovely day, some great art from Anish Kapoor. Met lovely buddies @saraknitsandsews @stitchmeayear @redbeanrambling @judithrosalind @thecurlycurl and visited the F&T museum for the Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell exhibition. Then drinks and tapas.
More loveliness tomorrow ☺️ as @londonfrocktails happens ✂️

I’ve been asked by @sewover50 to describe my own style, I am fully aware that my choices are coloured by the inspirations of others, my shape, silhouettes and a firm belief that growing up in the 80s, it was far more enticing to be considered an interesting dresser than to dress prettily. I come from a working class home and it was more important to have food and books than clothes and make up. This engendered a creativity with clothes and fashion that hasn’t left me.
I adore clothes and I am confident in my choices. I would like to think that I am quietly bold with silhouettes and proportions. Happy to try new shapes and fearless with accessories.
Given that I am a larger woman, my choice of clothing has been limited in the past, limited by shops, designers and societal norms.
I started sewing as a response to all of these things. A way of dressing uniquely, a chance to experiment with new shapes and also embracing the possibility of sewing items of clothing that I couldn’t afford although I am equally happy to spend a lot on good ethically sourced fabric.
I do dwell on clothes, I think about what I’ll wear in advance and I plan my wardrobe.
I still enjoy buying clothes but I’m far more considered about what I buy, very often choosing things that I wouldn’t make myself.
I think that my style is probably seen as quirky and I do love a flourish or a surprise. Accessories bring their own energy to an outfit and can transform plain classic garments. I feel properly dressed when I add jewellery and of course, lipstick 💋✂️💋 by @corriesfancygoods

💀🐈‍⬛🐈💀 some more new pieces that I haven’t made for years. This skull is a tester to see if I liked the matte flowers and shiny glaze together. I think it works, I have lots of them to start glazing tomorrow, super fiddly with the teeny tiny flowers. #skull #ceramics #clay #ceramicjewellery #ceramicsofinstagram by @corriesfancygoods

I haven’t made any of these bouquet brooches for years so I thought it was about time. I’ll be bringing them with me to @guthrieghani in a couple of weeks time. This is only one of two makers markets that I’ve booked for the remaining year. Face to face I often give reductions for multiple purchases or returning customers so grab yourself some new work and stroke some fabric. See you in Moseley ☺️

#iamirma from @iam_patterns I really don’t know why I only have one of these…it’s one of the best placket construction methods ever. I wore it with my lovely polka dot camper shoes and was stopped and asked about them a couple of times when out today.
Met up with lovely mate @els.elegant.creations and went to @fablasicecreamwales in Cowbridge…we had the best custard slice I’ve ever eaten and I’m a connoisseur.
The kiln is on again and I’m back glazing tomorrow. Hoping to have a little autumn update in the shop soon ☺️ #sewover50 #sewer #sew #isew by @corriesfancygoods

Just doing a little shout out for a wonderful jeweller near me @morganjewellery a bricks and mortar shop in Penarth. It displays such a unique collection of jewellers with work that I’ve not seen anywhere else.
There is a workshop visible in the shop where craftspeople are making and they are very helpful. If you are ever in the area can I urge you to visit, you won’t be disappointed. Penarth has some chi chi shops and a beach, winner. Thank you Anne 🤍
This brooch was bought for me by my mother and is very precious. It’s a massive chunk of mother of Pearl which has been beautifully set into a silver mount. I adore it 🤍 I know that Anne has several similar pieces but each one is unique.
In other news, the kiln is on, lots of glaze tests are in and they’ll be out on Monday when more glazing will commence.

I sometimes buy a lemonade in the coffee shop at the top of the steps…I head down and meet the group and I marvel every time I do it. I’ve been dipping in the sea for many years now and each dip is different. I sleep better after a dip and it feels as if I’ve reset my body. Had some lovely dips this week 💦 #seadip #seadipping #aberavon #beach by @corriesfancygoods
