Would you drink this? 🥃 My Dad found, probably at an estate sale or a thrift shop/flea market/whatever, a box of old #cocktail recipes, dating to 1945. 🥃🥃🥃A hot mixture of ale, egg, molasses, and rum, this was a sailor’s drink since the 1400s. Bartenders would use a loggerhead, or flip-dog, heated in a fire, to mix the drink which would cause it to froth over the side of the serving glass, or “flip.” Such a method would make the flip taste bitter & burnt, and is considered a more colonial take. As for today, use the egg white too, shake well over ice and grate some nutmeg over it once it’s double strained into a glass.🍸🍸🍸 Bartenders: do you have a favorite take on this drink?

This is my submission for the New Malt Order 2018, Lowlands Outreach #newmaltorder It is prepared like this:
Place these ingredients in a mixing glass.
45mL Auchentoshan Three Wood
15 mL Hornitos Plata Tequila
15 mL Bärenjäger Honey Liqueur
2 dashes Regan’s Orange Bitters No. 6
Stir the ingredients until well chilled. (Do not skimp on time for this step. Spend 30 to 40 seconds for proper dilution.) Strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe and serve garnished with a sprig of thyme.

This cocktail works. It just does, although it seems as though it shouldn’t. The thyme accentuates the salinity of the tequila. The honey liqueur and the dark fruit notes from the sherry finished malt accentuate each other. Those elements play off each other like a Manhattan with the bitters tying it all together. Like the disparate cultures that make up my city of Pittsburgh, these seemingly unmixable ingredients come together to form something greater than the individual. (CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS)

Would you drink this? 🥃 My Dad found, probably at an estate sale or a thrift shop/flea market/whatever, a box of old cocktail recipes, dating to 1945. Let’s get that one thing out of the way (yeah, that): this recipe is missing orange juice. Add a half ounce of it and if you made your grenadine good, you won’t need the “demi-teaspoon” of powdered sugar. Also, a hooker is 2.5 ounces. god, I missed doing these. Shake and double strain into a coupe, regardless of what the glass tastes like. Garnish with a cherry🍸🍸🍸

I sometimes wonder if it would be a more fulfilling endeavor to retype all of these cards with mixing instructions and glassware and all the required ingredients. Stars Fell In Alabama seems to be misspelled after the 1934 jazz standard, Stars Fell on Alabama by Frank Perkins and Mitchell Parish.
