Now introducing… Shake, Rattle and Crow 🎤🎵🎶!!! Thanks to my friend Chris for coming up with their band name. The members are Piper (mama), Cooper (dad) and Ziggy (their helper crow). Same situation as before - I was apparently spending too much time with Ellie and they had to sing me over… and it worked. I am so grateful I got to witness Piper cleaning her baby. Her baby plopped down on the grass with their beak up and Piper promptly flew over to preen him/her 🥰. Preening helps crows clean their feathers, remove parasites, and keep their plumage in good condition. They cannot reach all parts of their body, so they rely on others to help. #crowfriends #crowsofinstagram #crowlovers #corvidsofinstagram #allopreening by @corvidsbythesea

This is a mating ritual between Piper and Cooper 🖤. The rattle and coo sounds along with the body movements confirms it. Nesting season is around the corner and you may notice this occurring with crows you know, too! by @corvidsbythesea

Piper and Cooper have been gracing me with a lot of their pair bonding lately, lucky me! Sometimes when I arrive, other times after a territory dispute, context heavily plays a part. Why is this the funniest video to me 🤣. Ellie’s strut is always a 10/10 and he has been continuously bullying this young crow every time I’m there. I can’t tell if it’s one of his babies from the summer that he’s giving tough love to or if it’s a neighbor and due to the territories being less defined, they are eating at their food pile. This doesn’t cover my entire park day visit, but it covers some of it! It’s always enjoyable hanging with my crow friends 🖤🐦‍⬛. I also get to see juncos, wrens, towhees, etc. I will witness them drink out of the water bowls I refill too! Last week I saw a red breasted nuthatch drinking from it right after I sat it down 🥹. It’s always something new when I get to hang out with them and this was no different 😂. Singing together one minute and wrestling the next - Piper doesn’t tolerate it! She always breaks it up and they listen to her. After this, they were all happily eating together. I used to get a little upset when I’d see them fight, now I observe, I know it’s for a reason, just like humans! #crowsofinstagram #crow #crows #corvidsofinstagram by @corvidsbythesea

Who else can agree with this?! As an introvert, my circle of friends is certainly small and they all understand my desire to spend time with my crows. They also understand I am constantly distracted by crows if we are on a walk and always bring snacks with me! That being said, I can definitely be extroverted - I simply recharge alone. How about you!?

Happy Birthday to @_mighty_mali_ from Piper and Cooper! 🖤🐦‍⬛🎉🎶

Enjoy an oldie but a goodie of these two pair bonding. With the seasons changing and roosting time approaching, their behaviors are certainly shifting along with their territories loosening. As always, Piper will carve out time to spend with me along with her 3 kiddos, hard to believe she and Cooper have 3 now! Writing down my daily observations has been very helpful too. “On a hot summer’s day, you can watch a bird like a crow very, very carefully. And you’ll never see it sweat. Because birds don’t have sweat glands. Instead, they’ve evolved a variety of other ways to keep cool.   One of them is panting. As the bird breathes rapidly, its throat quivering, heat’s carried out of its body via the lungs and air sacs. The lungs are a one-way system, so cool air coming in doesn’t get mixed up with warm air coming out. Holding its bill open, the bird also oscillates a tiny bone in a part of its throat where there are a lot of blood vessels. The oscillations bring more blood to the area, allowing heat from the blood to dissipate.” - Audubon Society
