8 oil paintings make this gorgeous little run cycle possible. I want to thank @andrewcadima for the inspiration to animate frame by frame. This was a fun experiment and I will definitely be doing more. by @cory_rain

I was paralyzed with fear before starting this project. Months into my sabbatical all the windows of opportunity were standing wide open and they had been for a while. I had to ask myself, why haven’t you tried your dream, and the answer from within was that I was afraid.
This was a hard one to face. To accept that I was afraid and to then not bully myself about that fear. That was even harder. Clearly there was a division within me. Some part wanting to see what we could do, to experiment, to live a little dream. And another part completely resistant.
I did not want to go to war with myself over this, and I did not think I could surrender my dream. So instead of being “tough” I allowed myself to be vulnerable. I leaned into myself and my friends.
I needed encouragement, and a strategy. In the fashion of the truest of friends @jordaningmire gave me both. He asked me what the smallest step toward this project would look like, and after I answered, he asked me what time I was going to set my alarm for the next day to do this task! Genius. The decision to start was no long mine, and so both parts of myself, fear and inspiration set off for the hardware store the next day to buy supplies and bang up a support for our canvas. I was underway. by @cory_rain

For the fisherman a nuisance, for a visitor, how magical? I wonder what part of my daily life would be unforgettable to another? by @cory_rain

I have animated a lot of animals, but I thought it would be interesting to bring a common object to life. What should I do next? by @cory_rain

In love with these oil painting animations. What you’re looking at is 12 paintings shown in quick succession on loop. I think I’m just getting started with these. Excited to see where it leads. by @cory_rain

Judging by the timelapse I might have worked on the foreground for a week! Sheesh! But that’s ok. Sometimes I have to remind myself that “those were complicated squiggles” Each mark is judged for size, direction, color, value and saturation, before the brush hits the canvas. It can be a lot. by @cory_rain

Every mark is laid down side by side like a tile mosaic. The process requires a lot of focus but I feel the result is worth it. Paintings have always seemed like magic to me. Showing every mark, is like showing that there’s nothing up my sleeve, no hidden tricks, and I think this deepens the magic. Some kinds of fear are actually beacons, there to show us the way and illuminate our path. Seeing what’s possible, what you’re capable of, is open to everyone, the cost of admission is courage. And even though the silliest things can be scary, they still require our bravery. For me the scale and complexity of this piece took a lot of pushing. It brought together everything I had been studying for years into one piece and for some reason the idea that I might be wasting my time was a huge blocker. If I had let that fear win, I would never know. I would not have had the opportunity to be so extremely proud of this work. And that’s probably why the fear is there I guess. For balance. Anyway, I just wanted to say that if you find yourself wanting to do something, but there is fear in the way, just do one step toward your goal. Once you’re there, you can take another. You can go an easier direction, sure, but directly toward fear is probably what you want out of life. That’s the path. Oil on canvas 48x60 “The Builders, part of the Baja cycle.” by @cory_rain

I thought I’d try a bit of a tonalism vibe on this one. Just down stream from Palouse Falls in Washington State. Oil on panel, 16x20” by @cory_rain

I wouldn’t say I’m OBSESSED with minimal mark making, but I do enjoy a challenge. There’s a fine line I’m hunting for that holds enough realism, yet is extremely simplified, while trying not to go full cartoon. If the value and direction of each mark are carefully chosen, I think that might be the key. Ok. Maybe a little obsessed. It’s very satisfying when it works out. Anyway, Oil on canvas. 48x60” by @cory_rain

I don’t usually voice the “who” and “why” of a painting. It seems to me that space left open is better filled by the viewer. Everyone bringing their own context and stories, adding to the work. Growing it just by observing. But this time is different. I’m quite proud of my Aunt for choosing her own path, sticking to it, and showing such resiliency. Her home is humble, but it is its own kind of Eden. High up in the mountains, when the snow comes, it can stay. And so too must she, tending to the wood stove that burns all winter. In the summer the grass is filled with hoppers and butterflies. The garden is lush. I look forward to my next visit.
