@robertagambarini3000 and @tamirhendelman fall into the “can’t miss” category!

Another crazy throwback to June of 2001! Our first @coastaljazz Jazz Festival. It was still the Du Maurier festival if you can believe that 🚬🚬🚬🚬

We got lucky and were able to present the @kurtisrosenwinkel and @markturnersaxophone quartet. They were joined by @benstreet2 and Eric MacPherson.

As you’d imagine, the music was phenomenal but the night was memorable for another reason. At the beginning of the second set we were raided by city officials, fire fighters, liquor inspectors. They were coming down hard on Kitsilano businesses for after hours operation, serving minors, over capacity etc. They were looking for anything to bust us on.

I don’t remember the full name of the fire chief but his first name was Ken and he was an absolute dick. Tried to scare me and bully me making all kinds of threats and accusations. A real piece of work. Oddly enough the head city guy was Guy Gusdal and he handled everything with kindness and grace. We were in violation of a few little kitchen issues that had to do with our suppression system in the kitchen but that was about it. He helped me navigate the issues and few years later helped us with our renovation and getting permits etc.

They were so used to business being shady that they just grouped me into the same category. I was young but I was trying run a legit business and I was trying to clean up the reputation of the place after the previous owners did some questionable things.

I was pretty freaked out that night but we perservered and made it 14 years!!

The Cellar’s grand opening in 2001! It was the first lineup we ever had, it went up the stairs and out into the street

I think this gig served as the CD release for the BRAD TURNER QUARTET featuring SEAMUS BLAKE - Live @ The Cellar (recorded before I bought the club).

I was soooo green and had (and still do) so much to learn but I was so excited. That record is what made me want to start a record label! It still stands up today as an amazing record! It’s hard to find but if you can find it, it’s worth it!

This particular weekend was fraught with issues on so many levels. What remains true is that as ornery as Frank Morgan was and as crappy as he treated the band he played some absolutely stunning music.

For a number of reasons, do you think that this record would be easy to find but I have actually had trouble finding a clean copy of it.

I was down in Bellingham at Aladdin Records and found a copy for $5. It’s not clean by any stretch but for $5 it’s cool!
