A microbial ecologist fascinated by diverse cultures šŸŒŽšŸ”¬Scientist, photographer, and pun aficionado
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The #WorldMicrobeForum is just around the corner and I can’t wait! I’m especially exited to help convene an interactive symposium called ā€œArt + Science: How Art Can Engage Audiences and Communicate Scienceā€ that will feature some amazing #SciArt and #SciComm from @tasturm1 @admiraladkins @anamaporras and @anneamadden that will take place on June 23 at 5pm EST. Would love to see you there, but even if you can’t attend you can still participate using the hashtag #WMFSciArt… be sure to tag your own microbial masterpieces, favorite artists, and examples of effective #SciComm or education featuring #SciArt.

I’ll also be participating as a panelist in a Meet-the-Expert session called ā€œUsing Art as a Tool for Microbiology Education and Outreachā€ the same morning at 8am EST.

Can’t thank the organizers enough for their efforts to make this virtual conference a reality and for highlighting the intersections of #art & #science and how they can work together to convey effectively important ideas. taken in Los Angeles, California by @corzett

Thrilled to share the news that one of my photos made the cover of Cell, which is really a testament to the vital mission and fascinating research of the @microbiome_conservancy. So what does this image have to do with how your gut #microbiome evolves? Keep reading & check out my story!...
.
The Microbiome is a hot topic in #science, but the field has a major problem: we’re not seeing the whole picture! Most studies only include participants from urban centers of industrialized nations - despite the fact that non-industrial lifestyles often host greater #biodiversity! The @microbiome_conservancy is addressing this bias by creating a comprehensive culture collection reflecting the full diversity of the global human gut.
.
That’s how I found myself capturing this timeless scene of #Hadza hunter-gatherers in #Tanzania. The GMbC has been sampling communities all over the world, and their latest results out now in Cell show that our #lifestyle impacts the types of microbes living inside of us and how these #bacteria #evolve!
.
They found that microbes within #industrialized hosts exchange bits of #DNA with each other more frequently! The functions of this gene exchange also reflect distinct host lifestyles!
.

🦠 šŸŽØ 🧫 Calling all creatives! 🧫 šŸŽØ 🦠 .
I'm excited to announce that I'll be co-moderating a session at #ASMicrobe focused on #SciArt and #SciComm with @tasturm1. In addition to a great speaker lineup featuring Dr. Anne A Madden (@anneamadden), Dr. Christine Marizzi (from @biobus), Dr. Dennis Mangan (Chalk Talk Science), and Dr. Ana Maria Porras (@anamaporras) we're organizing an exhibition where you can share how you use the creative arts to engage audiences!
.
We're working on two exhibition options: an informal gathering where you can display and share your work, as well as a more formal table option where artists can register sand sell their work over the span of a few days. We're aiming to be as inclusive as possible so everyone can meet, mingle, and share.
.
If you're interested in either option please DM either myself of *Tasha*. We'll keep you posted as plans get finalized, but we really need to know how many artists would like to participate so we can plan accordingly.
.
Also, please consider participating even if you don't consider yourself an artist! We're interested in sharing the many ways art can help #SciComm and would love to learn about examples of creative classroom assignments and outreach.
.
Please share this session and exhibition with anyone you think might be interested in attending or the artist open-call. Don't forget, the abstract deadline is fast approaching! Hope to see you there!

Today is Wildlife Conservation Day 2019. You’ve probably seen posts all day focusing on large charismatic animals that definitely deserve our attention, but let’s not forget about all of the microscopic #biodiversity out there worth preserving as well. Check out this recent article I wrote for @asmicrobiology discussing the mission of the @microbiomeconservancy and what it’s like to be on the ground and in the field preserving the hidden bacterial diversity within the global human gut. Follow the link in my bio.

I’m on the road in southern #Thailand with the Global Microbiome Conservancy (@microbiomeconservancy) and we just finished the second leg of our journey. We worked with three #Maniq communities living near #Phattalung and #Trang to preserve important microbial #biodiversity and understand how diet and lifestyles shape the microbial communities living inside of us. There are only a few hundred Maniq and we were fortunate to spend time in one of their villages to learn more about how these hunter-gathers make a living in local forests. We quickly learned how rapid industrialization and restricted land use are dramatically impacting their way of life and how challenging it can be to maintain tradition.

Thrilled to see my photo used on the MIT homepage this morning promoting the exciting work of the @microbiomeconservancy. Head over to www.mit.edu to check out the great article from MIT Spectrum.
.
More than a year ago when I decided to pursue this crazy idea of using photography to help share exciting research, this is exactly the kind of publicity I was envisioning. Hopefully this is only the beginning, but it’s really nice to see some promising results.
.
Can’t thank the @microbiomeconservancy enough for believing in me and this idea. Also, shout out to the @uscbridgeinstitute and the Bridge Art + Science Alliance grant that helped pay my travel expenses to Malaysia where I captured this moment.

Today marks International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, and the theme for 2019 is #IndigenousLanguages. Although indigenous peoples make up less than 5% of the world's population, they speak the overwhelming majority of ~7000 languages. Shockingly, it's estimated that every two weeks an indigenous language disappears, and with it important parts of human culture and ways of understanding the world around us.
.
Let me give you one example... Recently, the @microbiomeconservancy worked with a #Jahai community in #Malaysia. Although we were there to help characterize and preserve the full #biodiversity of microorganisms living in the human gut, I learned something fascinating about their language...
.
🚨 Pop Quiz 🚨
.
What color are the flowers in this #Jahai woman's hair?
.
Easy enough? Okay... now, try to describe how you think those flowers smell?
.
Do they smell "sweet" or is that just associated with a taste? Perhaps they're "fragrant" but that doesn't really tell you what kind of fragrance it is. Maybe they smell like some other kind of flower, but then you're just telling me an object it smells like rather than the scent itself.
.
In English there are plenty of words to describe what we see (you can immediately describe the colors of a stop light), but we don't have many words to describe how things smell. In Jahai, there are "basic terms" (like we use for colors) to describe various scents that everyone who speaks the language understands. Preserving and learning from indigenous languages can help us all learn something about ourselves and the world around us.

Happy #InternationalCatDay! I stumbled across this "odd-eyed cat" while I was wandering through a #Jahai village in #Malaysia with the @microbiomeconservancy. The condition, heterochromia iridis, occurs when melanin granules are prevented from reaching one eye during development. As seen here, this condition most commonly affects white cats and typically manifests with one blue eye and the other green, yellow, or brown.

There's going to be a widespread heat wave across much of the US this weekend so be sure to grab a friend, head to the water, and have some fun cooling off.
.
While the @microbiomeconservancy was working with the #Jahai in #Malaysia we found these boys going head-over-heels for the refreshing waters of #TasikBanding in #RoyalBelum state park. Early childhood exposure to microorganisms in the environment can help us develop a healthy immune system, so get outside and have some flippin' fun!
