Happy #WorldMicrobiomeDay on behalf of the Global Microbiome Conservancy team.

We are thrilled to introduce our mission, our work, and our scientific interests.

The Global Microbiome Conservancy is a nonprofit organization, collecting & preserving the full #biodiversity of human gut bacteria, which are disappearing rapidly around the world due to urbanization & industrialization.

Our library already contains thousands of human gut bacteria, and will be available worldwide for non-commercial research advancing microbiome science & human health.

The Conservancy upholds the highest ethical standards. All work is nonprofit, and ownership is retained by the individuals who choose to participate.

Truly honored to see this amazing photo by @CCorzett accompanying our recent paper to be selected for the cover of the new @cellpress issue!

The #microbiome is a hot topic in #science, but the field has a major problem: we’re not seeing the whole picture! Most studies only include participants from urban centers of industrialized nations - despite the fact that non-industrial lifestyles often host greater #biodiversity! Together with our consortium of worldwide scientists we are addressing this bias by creating a comprehensive biobank of bacterial species reflecting the full diversity of the global human gut.

In our inaugural article, by @mgroussi, @matilda_poy & a global team of scientists from the USA, Canada, Finland, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon, we highlight how microbiomes acquire new functionality based on host lifestyle.

Besides our ex-situ work on building a biobank of human gut bacteria, we fully support efforts to conserve this biological diversity where it naturally exists. We aim at educating the public at large on the importance of less-industrialized diets for human health, as well as the responsible use of antibiotics. When we work with participating human communities worldwide, we talk to them about the effects of processed foods and antibiotics on their gut microbial diversity and health, so they can make their own informed decisions.

Happy Holidays on behalf of the Global Microbiome Conservancy team.

The Global Microbiome Conservancy is a nonprofit organization, collecting & preserving the full #biodiversity of human gut bacteria, which are disappearing rapidly around the world due to urbanization & industrialization.
.
Our library already contains thousands of human gut bacteria, and will be available worldwide for non-commercial research advancing microbiome science & human health.
.
The Conservancy upholds the highest ethical standards. All work is nonprofit, and ownership is retained by the individuals who choose to participate.
.
.
.
Our core values are:
.
Conservation
We dedicate our efforts to conserve an invisible, intimate and crucial biodiversity for humans: the gut microbiome. By culturing, isolating and storing gut bacteria, we are building an open, non-profit and global library of our microbial heritage.
.
Representation
We are strongly committed in working with a wide variety of human populations worldwide, including under-represented and indigenous peoples, to promote inclusion in microbiome science.
.
Capacity Building
Our global consortium promotes capacity building in partner institutions through scientific training and local research support.
.
Advancing Knowledge
We generate microbiome resources for the research community to advance science and promote human health. We strongly engage in outreach and educational activities to promote the objectives of the Conservancy and spread knowledge on the #microbiome.

On #InternationalMicroorganismDay let's emphasize how the industrialization of our lifestyles alters the biodiversity of our gut #microbiota.

Studies show that the gut microbiomes of peoples living in urban centers of industrialized countries around the world are very distinct and present a much poorer diversity than peoples living in rural areas of non-industrialized countries.

The consumption of processed food and the abusive use of antibiotics and sanitizers in industrialized areas contribute to this decrease of human-associated bacterial diversity. As a result, some commensal microbes that have co-evolved with us for millennia – and which represent an integral facet of human health and history – may soon go extinct.

According to the United Nations, 70% of the human populations will live in urban centers by 2050. Meaning that many communities will soon adopt some degrees of industrialization in their lifestyle and are likely to face rapid incidence of both microbiome perturbations and non-communicable diseases.

Spread the word - help us preserving this crucial biodiversity for future generations!

Sampling expeditions represent a significant amount of time, usually 3 weeks in each country to recruit 100 participants across several locations. But most of the work actually happen between trips. Wondering what the #GMbC team is up to during the #shutdown?
.
We are continuously working on networking with #scientists, administrations and NGOs around the globe and getting ethical approvals and legal permits to be able to work in additional countries. Spoiler alert: #Nepal, #Indonesia and #Argentina may be our next destinations!
.
As of today, our consortium involves 70+ scientists across 36 countries, collecting and preserving the #biodiversity of human gut microbes for future generations. If you would like to join our effort we encourage you to contact us!
.
We are also making a lot of progress analyzing the data generated since we launched our initiative in 2016. From the first 1,000+ participants involved in the GMbC, diet and health metadata, as well as 16S and metagenomics #microbiome data, have been put together and analyzed.
.
Interested in understanding how the recent loss of gut microbial biodiversity in industrialized societies impacts #humanhealth? How does the microbiome interact with the innate and adaptive immune system and how did these interactions co-evolve? Stay tuned!
.
While no more wet lab work can currently happen, we are also actively elaborating new protocols to get ready for next experiments. One of the most challenging parts of our work is to design new media to isolate the full diversity of human gut bacteria and biobank them.
.
We have already hundreds of bacterial species biobanked including 200+ under-characterized taxonomies. Give us your opinion on which bacterial genus/order/phylum we should focus our efforts on when we get back to the lab!

"The microbiome is arguably one of the most exciting topics in science today. Yet despite remarkable progress, our current understanding of the human gut microbiome is fundamentally flawed: we’re not seeing the full picture.
.
The vast majority of human microbiome studies have characterized a limited subset of populations and lifestyles; predominantly skewed towards subjects in the urban centers of industrialized nations. This remains true in spite of mounting evidence demonstrating that these very
communities tend to have comparatively less microbial diversity than those elsewhere who are maintaining more traditional lifestyles."
.
Check out this article @corzett wrote for @asmicrobiology! Learn about his experience traveling with us and how we work to preserve human gut microbiome biodiversity before it’s too late.
