In this series, Xiao Min adopts an almost scientific method of unfolding enclosed forms into planar diagrams. Birdcages, fishbowls and even the Earth are treated as bounded spatial fields: for the creatures within them, movement is possible, yet complete escape is not. The analogy extends to human exist-ence, confined to the surface of a planet within a larger cosmic order. Mapping becomes a response to this con-dition—a seemingly objective system devised to locate ourselves within spaces whose limits we cannot ultimately transcend.

Xiao Min (b. 1976) is an artist born in Zhejiang, China. He is a professor at the Fine Arts College of Shanghai University.

The Fuwang Mountain Series--Collecting Alms
扶王山系列——化缘
Bronze
34 x 28 x 63 cm
2012

In Collecting Alms, Xie Aige builds an upward progression from earth and water to the standing figure and the cloud held aloft. As the eye rises, weight gradually gives way to lightness. The title refers to the Buddhist practice of monks receiving alms, while "collecting" also recalls mist gathering into clouds. Water, mist and cloud suggest continuous transformation and impermanence. The figure's raised head, upright torso and lifted hand create an open, optimistic posture, while its compact proportions, closed eyes and steady stance retain a sense of calm. The work brings ascent, transformation and equanimity into a single bodily form.

Xie Aige was born in Hunan, China, in 1977. She completed her studies at the School of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, and previously taught within the Department of Humanities and Art Design at Tongji University in Shanghai. She works as a professional artist and holds membership with the China Ceramic Artists Association and the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Design Association. Her artworks have been presented at numerous major domestic and international exhibitions alongside international art fairs, earning widespread acclaim. These venues include Art Basel (Miami, Hong Kong), the L.A. Art Show, the Amsterdam Biennale, Chengdu Blue Roof Museum, Liu‑Haisu Art Museum and Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art.

-------------

Liu Gang's Tales of Machinery develops from his longstanding practice of collecting objects that have fallen out of use. In this series, capacitors, inductors, heat sinks, circuit boards, chips, interfaces, cooling fans and other components dismantled from obsolete machines are reassembled on dark geometric panels. Removed from their original systems, these parts retain the marks of use while entering a new visual and operational order.

From afar, the works appear as dark, indistinct forms punctuated by small points of light; at close range, they resolve into dense mechanical bodies. Sound, sound-reactive lights and cooling fans further activate the assemblages, allowing obsolete components to establish new contact with the viewer. Once associated with technological progress and the promise of a modern future, these parts now carry traces of use, wear and obsolescence into the present. The “tales” of the title emerge through those material histories and through the new forms of movement, light and sound they produce.

Liu Gang (b. 1963) is an artist with family roots in Hebei. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at East China Normal University and currently lives and works in Shanghai.

Liu Gang (b. 1963) is an artist with family roots in Hebei. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at East China Normal University and currently lives and works in Shanghai. Part of his recent practice centers on the visual language of electronic circuitry, exploring how people might reinhabit technological environments. The interactive soundscape installation Tales of Machinery Series reassembles discarded electrical components bearing traces of prior use into a performing ensemble that forms a direct link with the viewers.

“The Free Tree”series consists of artworks made in 2012. They dwell somewhere deep in our memory and bring back our happiest moments of childhood. Quite unlike the reality of the present day, they are simple, free and peaceful.

One of the most promising young Chinese sculptors of her generation, Xie Aige is known for her whimsical, masterfully crafted sculptures made from bronze and synthetic materials. Frequently finished with creamy‑white and glossy‑black surfaces, Xie’s works capture poetic moments of humanity within nature. She is perhaps best recognised for her “Tai Chi” series, which features subtly abstracted figures striking different tai chi poses.

“Even the stillest pose can touch us deeply,” she states. Xie’s latest body of work is “Tree Top Memories”, a collection of charming, subtly humorous sculptures that conjure imagery of hills, streams, mythical beings and wild animals. All of these elements draw inspiration from her childhood spent growing up in rural China. Birds hold a particularly significant place across the artist’s practice; they symbolise a state of purity untouched by the industrialisation and urban character of Shanghai, the city where she now resides.

Yang Xiaojian (b. 1960) was born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China, and currently lives and works in Shanghai. His practice interweaves the traditions of Chinese calligraphy with the visual language of abstract painting. Through his sustained exploration of calligraphic brushwork and the contemporary possibilities of ink and paper, he has developed a distinctive mode of expression that moves between semi-figuration and abstraction, creating resonant connections between personal perception and social engagement. His works are held in the collections of the National Art Museum of China, Park Hyatt Shanghai, The Peninsula London, Louis Vuitton USA, John Portman, Tony Chi & Associates, LVMH Watches & Jewelry, as well as other private and institutional collections.

Li Peng chose the two most commonly used search engines, Baidu and Google, starting from a picture with black dots on a white background. After each search step, he selected the one that he felt was "the most suitable for painting". Continue to search, and so on, continue to choose, search again... This is obviously an endless behavior, and it also provides him with a steady stream of creative materials.
So, when the completed works are juxtaposed together like a photo wall, we find that images of different styles and themes are brutally connected by some "magic". This "magic" may be the original "black dot", or it may be a line or an action that emerges in the middle, or it may be some kind of experience or "subconscious" of the artist... There is no doubt that this is an infinite order that is always changing. What maintains this process is the fierce struggle between human cognition and algorithmic cognition, and what the artist provides is only a fragment or partial contour.

Li Peng
Born in Yudu, Jiangxi Province in 1975, graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Jiangxi Normal University in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree; in 2008, he graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University with a master‘s degree; since 2008, he has worked in the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute.
