Tradition isn’t a look backward, it’s a foundation for what’s next. 🌀

At @cospacegallery located in Maxwell, they’re exploring the intersection of East Asian heritage and global modernism. Their current exhibition featuring Jiang Naijun and Xie Aige dives into the delicate balance between humanity and nature.🌿

Expect to see and discover how tradition and transformation exist in the same breath through traditional landscape aesthetics reimagined through “digital disruptions” and unexpected glitches. It’s a study in tension, tranquility, and the beauty of material collision. 🌿💻

📒
The "Street Series," which began in 2008, is the style that has received the most love among my works. The composition of these paintings serves as a fundamental framework, illustrating how the experiences I gathered from the world since childhood have taken shape within my inner self as an adult. For me, an alleyway always prompts a reflection on what "ideal" I must reach as I gaze toward the distant view at the end of the path. While we generally know the eventual end of finite human life, I believe the "journey" on the road as a "process" is always of profound significance.
The cyclical structure of this painting follows a specific journey: leaving the desk where thoughts originate, growing through books, moving toward the distant landscape, turning back at the destination, and being carried by the waves back to the starting point. Upon returning, we find ourselves—much like dice tossed into an unpredictable future—concluding as "me or us" who, like a "cat" that lives only in the present, focuses more intensely on the "here and now."
Set against the backdrop of Singapore, this particular piece features four slips of paper attached to the pillars of books on either side. Keywords such as "Art," "TMRW (Tomorrow) is yours to take," and "Love" are rendered in red and white, the two colors of the Singaporean flag. These three keywords represent fundamental human desires, yet they also felt uniquely suited to Singapore. When I first visited Singapore a few years ago—a nation often cited as a similar case to my homeland, Korea—I witnessed the "ideal" achieved by its people within this very alleyway.
In that space, I felt both a sense of kinship and the exotic affluence emanating from its diverse ethnic composition and its status as a hub of trade. In this sense, this painting can be seen as a tribute. (For reference, the alleyway depicted is in the Boat Quay area.) #李慶美 #artsg #artsg2026 #cospacegallery #kyoungmilee
