The Cyprus problem has become a field of communication games, contradictions and mutual accusations. And while the two leaders try to convince everyone of who bears less responsibility for the deadlock, the division is becoming further entrenched.

President Christodoulides continues to announce initiatives and diplomatic contacts, cultivating the impression that something is moving forward on the Cyprus problem, without this translating into any meaningful progress.

Characteristic examples are the much-discussed 19 points which, as he eventually clarified, were submitted orally, as well as the unilateral confidence-building measures he announced in January 2026 but which were never made public.

The question now is not how many initiatives the President undertakes, but whether there is genuine political will to move the Cyprus problem forward. The impression being created is that he is not seeking to overcome the deadlock, but rather to manage it.

On the other hand, Tufan Erhürman has also failed, to date, to demonstrate that he approaches the resumption of negotiations with the necessary sense of urgency. What is needed is action, not merely declarations.

The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin, was absolutely clear: the two leaders must begin working together, not only through declarations, but by delivering tangible results.

We demand a clear commitment to the agreed basis for a solution, substantive confidence-building measures, and the resumption of negotiations from where they were interrupted in 2017.

The Cyprus problem is not a matter of communication management; it is a matter of security, prosperity and prospects for future generations. by @costa.constanti

(Ακολουθούν ελληνικά) @voltcyprus welcomes the legislative initiatives put forward by AKEL and ALMA concerning citizens’ social media posts on the eve of and on election day. Volt was represented at today’s discussion before the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs by Co-President Lysia Demetriou and Secretary-General Efi Xanthou.

The need to modernise the legislation is clear. The law must take into account how social media platforms operate and protect individuals’ freedom of political expression. Volt considers ALMA’s proposal a simpler and clearer basis for discussion in terms of its practical implementation, while expressing concerns about AKEL’s proposal regarding potential discrimination based on a person’s status as a politically exposed person.

The launch of this discussion and the willingness to examine the specific concerns raised are positive steps. Volt supports efforts to establish clear, proportionate and workable rules that safeguard the smooth conduct of elections while respecting citizens’ freedom of expression.

Το Volt χαιρετίζει τις νομοθετικές πρωτοβουλίες του ΑΚΕΛ και του ΑΛΜΑ για τις αναρτήσεις πολιτών στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα την παραμονή και την ημέρα των εκλογών. Στη σημερινή συζήτηση στην Κοινοβουλευτική Επιτροπή Εσωτερικών συμμετείχαν εκ μέρους του Volt η συμπρόεδρος Λύσια Δημητρίου και η γενική γραμματέας Έφη Ξάνθου.

Η ανάγκη εκσυγχρονισμού είναι δεδομένη. Η νομοθεσία πρέπει να λαμβάνει υπόψη τη λειτουργία των κοινωνικών δικτύων και να προστατεύει την προσωπική πολιτική έκφραση. Το Volt θεωρεί την πρόταση του ΑΛΜΑ απλούστερη και σαφέστερη βάση συζήτησης ως προς την εφαρμογή της, ενώ εκφράζει προβληματισμό για την πρόταση του ΑΚΕΛ όσο αφορα πιθανές διακρίσεις που μπορεί να προκύψουν βάσει της ιδιότητας του δημόσια εκτεθειμένου προσώπου.

Η έναρξη αυτής της συζήτησης και η διάθεση εξέτασης των επιμέρους προβληματισμών αποτελούν θετικό βήμα. Το Volt στηρίζει την προσπάθεια διαμόρφωσης σαφών, αναλογικών και εφαρμόσιμων κανόνων που διασφαλίζουν την ομαλή διεξαγωγή των εκλογών και σέβονται την ελευθερία έκφρασης των πολιτών. by @costa.constanti

(English follows) 🏛️🏺 The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Idalion, near modern-day Dali, offers a fascinating introduction to one of the most important city-kingdoms of ancient Cyprus. Its collection brings the site’s rich history to life through archaeological finds including pottery, sculptures, inscriptions and everyday objects that reveal the religious beliefs, artistic achievements and commercial connections of its inhabitants.

Among the most significant discoveries from Idalion are artefacts that shed light on the kingdom’s Phoenician connections and the famous Idalion Bronze Tablet, an extraordinary inscription documenting a royal agreement concerning medical services. Together, the museum’s exhibits provide a valuable glimpse into the multicultural world of ancient Cyprus and the civilisations that shaped its history.

🏛️🏺 Το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αρχαίου Ιδαλίου, κοντά στο σημερινό Δάλι, προσφέρει μια συναρπαστική γνωριμία με ένα από τα σημαντικότερα βασίλεια της αρχαίας Κύπρου. Η συλλογή του ζωντανεύει την πλούσια ιστορία της περιοχής μέσα από αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα, όπως κεραμικά, γλυπτά, επιγραφές και αντικείμενα καθημερινής χρήσης, που αποκαλύπτουν τις θρησκευτικές πεποιθήσεις, τα καλλιτεχνικά επιτεύγματα και τις εμπορικές σχέσεις των κατοίκων της.

(English follows) 🏛️🏺 Η Αρχαία Ιδάλιον, κοντά στο σημερινό Δάλι, υπήρξε ένα από τα σημαντικότερα βασίλεια της αρχαίας Κύπρου. Άκμασε ιδιαίτερα κατά την Εποχή του Σιδήρου, χάρη στη στρατηγική της θέση στην εύφορη πεδιάδα της Μεσαορίας, και εξελίχθηκε σε σημαντικό κέντρο εμπορίου, παραγωγής χαλκού και πολιτιστικών ανταλλαγών.

Το βασίλειο ήταν γνωστό για το ιερό που συνδεόταν με τη λατρεία της Αφροδίτης και του Άδωνη, μαρτυρώντας τις πλούσιες θρησκευτικές παραδόσεις του νησιού και τις σχέσεις του με την ευρύτερη ανατολική Μεσόγειο. Η ιστορία του Ιδαλίου αντανακλά επίσης τις διαδοχικές επιρροές μεγάλων δυνάμεων της εποχής, καθώς βρέθηκε υπό φοινικική επιρροή και αργότερα εντάχθηκε στη σφαίρα επιρροής των Ασσυρίων και των Περσών.

🏛️🏺 Ancient Idalion, near modern-day Dali, was one of the most important city-kingdoms of ancient Cyprus. Flourishing from the Iron Age, it occupied a strategic position in the fertile Mesaoria plain and became a significant centre of trade, copper production and cultural exchange.

The kingdom was renowned for its sanctuary dedicated to Aphrodite and Adonis, reflecting the island’s rich religious traditions and connections with the wider eastern Mediterranean. Idalion’s history also tells a story of competing empires, coming under Phoenician influence before being incorporated into the Assyrian and later Persian spheres of power.
