Before the month of October ends, I want to highlight the Filipino flag raising ceremony held at Honolulu Hale in celebration of Filipino American History Month. 🇵🇭✨

I joined the administration, my Council colleagues, and Consul General Arman Talbo for this special ceremony honoring the rich history and resilience of Filipino Americans, especially here in Hawaiʻi. ☀️🗺️

A special mahalo to former City Councilmember and State House Vice Speaker Joey Manahan for pioneering the recognition of FAHM in Hawai‘i. In 2008, Manahan introduced House Bill 3343, designating October as “Filipino American History Month,” a pivotal moment in our state’s history. The following year, in November 2009, both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed House Resolution 780 and Senate Resolution 298, officially recognizing October as Filipino American History Month nationwide. 🇵🇭🇺🇸

As a proud Filipina American, it was moving to sing the Philippine National Anthem alongside fellow Filipino American legislators and community leaders from across the state. Let this be a reminder of our shared heritage, strength, and the many contributions of Filipino Americans and our ancestors that continue to make to our island home. 💛🌺

I had so much fun dancing with our kūpuna at the 55th Annual Senior Valentine’s Day Dance! My Council colleagues and I were honored to escort members of the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Senior Clubs onto the dance floor. 🪩

I was especially lucky to be paired with Mr. Gerald Oki of the Pearl City Senior Club. Age is just a number and our kūpuna still know how to light up the dance floor! 💃🕺

The Senior Valentine’s Day Dance is just one of the many special events organized by DPR’s Senior Division.

Mahalo to @honolulu_parks for hosting a successful event to bring our City and community together. I can’t wait to join in on the fun next year! ❤️

The HNL 311 app is the City’s new issue reporting system that makes it simple for residents to report things like potholes, faded road signs, cracked sidewalks, and broken streetlights right from your phone.

As a Councilmember, I always encourage our community to speak up when something in the neighborhood needs attention. Now it is easier than ever.

If you see something in your neighborhood that needs fixing, please take a moment to report it through the app. Submitting a request helps City departments respond more quickly and keeps our communities safe and well maintained.

Visit 🔗HNL311.com on the web or download the HNL311 app today and help us take care of our neighborhoods together. 📱🏙️🤝 taken in Honolulu Hale by @councilmembercordero

Over the past decade, Filipino representation on the Honolulu City Council has grown, where almost a decade ago, five out of nine members were Filipino. I’m proud to be part of this growing representation and to see our City continue to recognize Filipino American History Month each October for over 10 years!

As we celebrate Filipino American History Month, I reflect on the generations before me who worked hard, built lives for their families, and helped shape our city we call home today. I also honor my fellow Filipino legislators whom I have the privilege of working alongside today, as well as those who came before us and paved the way for future generations like mine.

This October, I feel especially grateful to celebrate this month not only as a proud Filipino American, but alongside my fellow Honolulu City Councilmembers. It means so much to be able to honor our heritage, share our stories, and celebrate the contributions of Filipinos here in Hawaiʻi and across the nation.

Maligayang Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭🤙🏽 taken in Honolulu Hale by @councilmembercordero

Growing our urban forest in ʻAiea! Efforts to enhance an undeveloped park in ‘Aiea are taking root, with the planting of nearly three dozen trees this past weekend.

A hui of non-profit, public, private, and government organizations are collaborating on the shared vision to improve ‘Aiea Interim Park, beginning with the planting of 34 trees in the 3.43-acre open area on Halewiliko Place.

From October 9-10, 2026, many hands worked together to plant a variety of nine different trees around the perimeter of the park, including: milo, lonomea, crape myrtle, narra, manele, puakenikeni, wiliwili, colvillea, and a Moreton bay fig tree.

“Our community’s kūpuna who are no longer with us are smiling to see this open space become a realization,” said Claire Tamamoto, President of the ‘Aiea Community Association. “So many hands have touched this project from way back. I am deeply grateful for all those who have helped and continue to keep this decades-old vision alive. We will remain committed to our slogan ‘building a sense of community’ for those kūpuna and the keiki of today and tomorrow.”

The trees were supplied by the City and County of Honolulu’s Division of Urban Forestry and through a $34,000 grant from the Laura Jane Musser Fund. Many additional organizations were instrumental in the coordination and completion of the tree planting effort (and future park enhancements), including: City Councilmember Radiant Cordero, ‘Aiea Community Association, ‘Aiea Intermediate School, Ali’i Pauahi Hawaiian Civic Club, Aloha Lā Halewilikō Senior Housing, Outdoor Circle, Trees for Honolulu’s Future, University of Hawai’i Tropical Landscape & Human Interaction Lab & Dr. Andy Kaufman, the ‘Aiea Neighborhood Board, Pali Momi Medical Center, Honolulu Community Action Program, and Boy Scout Troop 147. 🇵🇭 Happy #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth! This month is a special time for our council, as four out of our nine members have Filipino heritage. City Councilmembers and staff commemorated the occasion by wearing traditional Philippine attire during our honorary certificates program and full council meeting.

Did you know? Filipino American history stretches back more than 400 years, even before America became a nation!

📍 1587: The first recorded Filipinos arrived in Morro Bay, California.

📍 1906: The first sakadas (migrant workers) came to labor on plantations in Hawai’i, laying the foundation for a community that today makes up about 25% of our state’s population.
