Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as I was sworn in as your Councilmember for District 5. It is an honor to serve this community, and I am so thankful for your unwavering support.

I look forward to working with my fellow council members as I embark on this new journey!

To the Honorable members of the @honolulucitycouncil , we accept the fact that we will be sacrificing one meal a month for whatever it was we did to earn your disdain. Most of you do not depend on transit for your transportation needs, and perhaps cannot fathom what the fare increases mean to us. But we think you are foolish for thinking we will forget your votes to raise our bus fares, which are subsidized by property taxes.

This council voted unanimously to increase home exemptions, which means collecting less revenue. This council deliberately chooses who to help, and **it’s not us.**

To add insult to injury, the same members that voted for Bill 54 voted against an amendment to remove the bus fare increase in that same bill.

Councilmembers are also receiving higher salaries that in 2023 went from about $69k to $113k. Chairperson Tommy Waters and Floor Leader Esther Kia‘āina defended those outrageous pay increases by stating that those raises would result in leaders who would work full time to find good solutions to our city’s challenges, which is not apparent with the Bill 54 vote.

Maybe you see us as unimportant to your political careers here in Honolulu because we do not have the resources to contribute to your campaigns. But what we do have is our collective voices and lots of time to connect with other students, working professionals, and other residents of Honolulu.

Mahalo to Councilmembers Radiant Cordero, Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Matt Weyer - you advocated on behalf of the many organizations who opposed Bill 54 and for those of us who could not be in the room where decisions happen. We will remember your votes.

Thank you catskittyns on Bluesky for letting me use this.
