It was Kimmy who said we needed to make the Jane Austen 250th Anniversary Quilt, and I’m so glad we did.

This quilt is complex and challenging. It’s the most difficult quilt we’ve ever made, our “lifetime achievement quilt,” as @cindycloward so perfectly put it. Between the appliqué and the intricate borders, and building from the center out, precision was required at every step.
We spent over a year on the appliqué blocks, starting in August 2025 when Cindy began her sew-along. Once the appliqué was finished, we got together for four days to piece the borders, then another four days to finish the quilt.
Working with the beautiful @rileyblakedesigns reproduction fabrics, inspired by the antique coverlet Jane made with her sister and mother, has been so rewarding. The way @beelori1 designed the pattern and placed the colors is genius. Again and again, we loved how the browns and neutrals complement the colors in the appliqué.
Kimmy and I learned so much making our quilts, and we’re so grateful we had the chance to be part of the anniversary sew-along.
Thoughts on Jane Austen while making Jane

Jane often walked through the countryside, along footpaths and cobbled streets, thinking about matters of the heart. Her insight into love, social class, and how they shape our relationships still rings true today: to love and be loved, to feel appreciated and included, to be respected, and to find comfort in the company of those we choose.
Her novels are masterpieces, brimming with wit and beloved characters. Who doesn’t love a Mr. Darcy or a Lizzy? Do you have an Elinor in your life who keeps things sensible when your Marianne tendencies take over? Or a Wickham who can sweep you off your feet and break your heart? An Emma who meddles and can’t see the best match for herself? And then there’s Anne Elliot, who is so good in the waiting.
Jane’s characters teach us about strength, resilience, and patience, and how to love and treat others even when life is hard. It’s in struggle that we learn the most about ourselves. Making this quilt helped me understand why her stories still mean so much to so many. taken in Utah, USA by @countonlinens

Finishing Jane

Kimmy finished one day ahead of me. A beautiful and perfect finish!!! Her husband did a great photo shoot the next morning at sunrise. I set a goal to finish mine at sunset. I had to piece the outer hourglass borders and both ribbon borders. Then sew these last three borders on the quilt. I ran into trouble getting the inner ribbon border to fit. It took me two hours to work through it. Then sewed on the hourglass border and made it to 11:30 pm. We called it a finish! I will add the last outer ribbon border when I am more relaxed and ready.

So so happy to have two beautiful quilts finished! I have a separate post on thoughts about Jane.

All trimmed up and ready for Jane!

The quilt is coming along nicely. Adding the bright and cheerful appliquéd blocks to the neutral colors in the quilt is so magical. My appliqué border is finished and ready to sew on Jane. Then I will make the final hourglass borders. I’ll be finished by sunset!

Kimmy and I are officially in love with appliqué. We learned so much, made so many errors, and will do things differently in the future. But still really pleased with the results.

We want to jump into another appliqué quilt asap. We are already thinking about and so excited for @beelori1 new quilt coming in November. Fresh As A Daisy SAL!! Lori’s new Denim and Daisy fabric collection is so DREAMY!

Quilt Assembly Day 1 and 2

I’m excited to share the unboxing of all the bits and pieces of Jane. The first day we set up and settled. I had my final sit down with my appliqué blocks: two Southampton and two London. Kimmy helped me! Hand stitching all the appliqué for this quilt has been such a joy (and so much work.)

The next day I trimmed the vine borders and added them along with the four cornerstones to the quilt. Then continued adding the trim border and the hourglass borders. Beautiful!

The best part of this quilting journey is sewing and spending time with my sister.

Southampton #janeaustenanniversaryquilt

Today I completed all the appliqué for Jane! I’m so pleased to have a finish! Southampton has two blocks which came together nicely. Now I am ready to move forward with my borders. The quilt will be finished by this weekend!

I made the circle shapes with the @applipops metal set. I paint starch around the raw edges of the fabric and press with my mini iron.

London #janeaustenanniversaryquilt

Finishing up the appliqué on the last two London blocks. I have the other two complete and hand stitched down.

Working on Jane has been such a joy. The South Hampton appliqué is in progress and will share the final appliqué session up next! Almost ready to pack my Jane box and head back to Kimmy’s tomorrow!

Sharing my appliqué progress on the #janeaustenanniversaryquilt by @rileyblakedesigns and

Today I am working on the Oxford blocks. The four blocks are the cornerstones for the Chawton block. I am doing the starch and freezer paper method. The cirlce template is @applipops 🍥🍥🍥 and the glue is Appli-Glue by @jillilystudio and both work beautifully.

Loving every step! 🫶

Day 4 of celebrating the #janeaustenanniversaryquilt

We decided to skip the appliqué border and get straight to the outer tedious flying geese border. The 104 teeny weeny flying geese took us each 6 hours to complete. We did it and we are so happy they’re done!

Kimmy prepped her appliqué blocks to be ready for our next sewing session in October. I’ll be busy completing my appliqué for the big finish in October.

It’s been a wonderful four days sewing with my sister. This quilt is epic and so rewarding celebrating Jane. We love the quilt so much.

Day 3 of quilting #janeaustenanniversaryquilt

Today we spent hours piecing the hourglass blocks for the next border. Kimmy’s borders were sewn on and her quilt is growing! I finished my borders and they will be added onto my #quilt later. I started my vine appliqué for the vine border! I think this border really pulls everything together beautifully. 🍃

We are loving every minute of every hour sewing on Jane!

Day 2 of focus week of the #janeaustenanniversaryquilt

“There’s nothing about this quilt that’s fast.” @cindycloward

The tiny flying geese took several hours. So time consuming but so worth every minute. Kimmy’s vine border and Oxford corner stones were added to Chawton! The quilt is slowly building and coming together beautifully.

While I don’t have the vine borders completed, I am following along with piecing the border blocks. It’s truly an honor making the anniversary quilt. The reproduction fabrics are so lovely.
