Our Stance on Generative AI: Recently, we have noticed an increase in visiting companies and hirers providing promotional artwork that appears to be AI-generated. Unfortunately, we have no creative control over the artwork they choose to use, but we feel it is important to make our position clear as we navigate this. As an Arts Centre and cultural creative hub, we strongly oppose the use of generative AI in creative practices. This stance reflects not only our own policy, but also our commitments to the environment, to the creative industries, and to the artists and creators whose work generative AI systems are trained on without consent or compensation. We believe this represents serious harm to creative people that we are not willing to overlook. We have done our best to be transparent with our audiences when we have identified AI-generated content in materials promoting shows at our venue. However, this has at times caused frustration, and we are grateful for your patience as we navigate a fast-moving and complicated landscape. We are actively working with visiting companies to request alternative assets wherever possible. We realise that it may get to a stage where AI-generated content is not easily recognisable, in which case we can only communicate our stance as clearly as possible in the hope it has an impact. We are not here to shame anyone, we recognise that perspectives on AI vary widely. But we have a responsibility to be honest about where we stand and to act in ways that reflect the values of the community we serve. Alt text: Two graphics with text written on them.
