We heard of our friendโ€™s passing the other night. At first we didnโ€™t believe it, โ€œNo wayโ€, we thought, โ€œSomeone has the wrong information, Mick Levine is indestructible, heโ€™s alive up in that 99th Floor tower and heโ€™s gonna text us tomorrow about some asshole that spread a rumor around that he was dead, and weโ€™ll all laugh a nervous laughterโ€ฆโ€ But, that text never came. We tried his phone and it was disconnected. More posts about his death and more friends reached out with condolences: The legend, Mick Levine, had passed away, and it was real. We took a couple days to sit with it, but we wanted to make a post here and say a few things about our friend. The realest mf we, and this city, has probably ever seen and likely will ever see again. A lot of people donโ€™t know this, but Mick was the first person we let through the door at Covet. It was around April or May of 2025, a few months before we opened, one night we were there late, finishing up some painting and building display cases, and this strange man knocked on our door. @babe.maggot glanced over and saw this long haired figure with a shaggy beard ushering her over from behind the glass. Normally we wouldnโ€™t have opened the door for anyone, but something told us, โ€œLet him in.โ€ And after a quick chat about the โ€œweird shitโ€ we had โ€œgoing on in the shopโ€ (Mickโ€™s words, not ours), we did just thatโ€” we let him in, and we spent the next two hours just chatting with him about all sorts of things, but mostly, about his dear wife, business partner, best friend and โ€œbetter halfโ€, Brenda, who had very sadly passed away the same month we had moved to Chicago (gutted we never got to meet that goddess!). Mick had said it was the moth logo on our windows that caught his attention and made him pull over on the side of the road to see what we were creating. As our friendship with Mick grew we realized we were the same kind of moth, all fluttering around in the darkness, searching for that warm and healing light. His light was Brenda, and when that light went away, we think his own light turned off too. Our โ€œMenstruatinโ€™ With Satanโ€ box from the @tst.illinois is OVERFLOWING with your generous donations to the point where we needed another box to hold it all (thank you!!!). We had lots of familiar faces came through, as well as friends from out of state and even the country, and itโ€™s always our sincerest pleasure to welcome you all in and spend some time with you. Thank you for making Covet a stop on your โ€œmust visitโ€ list when youโ€™re visiting Chicago. Thank you for making Covet your โ€œmust stopโ€ shop after a long week of work or travel or even rest. Whether you are a new friend or a cherished old one, we are truly humbled, grateful, and honored to be a part of your life, however big or small. Starting on Tuesday the 20th, Covet will now be open on Tuesdays for the foreseeable future! โšก๏ธโšก๏ธโšก๏ธ Weโ€™re always really bummed when someone tells us theyโ€™ve tried to come to the shop on days weโ€™re closed, so in an effort to be more accessible to folks within the community we have decided to open up shop an extra day in hopes that it will make it a little easier for people to visit us! Our regular hours stay the same, weโ€™re just adding in Tuesdays as well! It is with great excitement that we announce our very first employee at Covet Oddities, our very own baby bat, Jocelyn! ๐Ÿฆ‡๐Ÿ–ค A little bit about Joc (or โ€œJawsโ€ as we sometimes call her): Jocelyn has been a dedicated customer and supporter of Covet since the very beginning. She has spent countless hours here at the shop with us either shopping or chatting, at various events, cvlt meetups, and more. Born and raised in Chicago for most of her life, Joc has a deep love and appreciation for all things Chicago, and specifically, the community here. When asked what her favorite thing about the shop was she replied, โ€œThe thing I love about Covet is mainly the community and how everybody shows up for one another and how many friends Iโ€™ve made since coming here. For the past year and a half, all the people Iโ€™ve met through Covet have been kindhearted and welcoming. I love how everything is ethically sourced, and both @death.scum and @babe.maggot know the backstory of everything. I also love how unique it is from all of the other witchy/occult shops in Chicago. PRE-ORDER for our F/W โ€˜26 long sleeves are live (link in bio) ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท Our new design, โ€œThe Roots of our Painโ€, was hand drawn by our resident artist @babe.maggot and features our conjoined skulls taken from our moth logo overgrown with exposed nerves and blood vessels. SIX removed teeth are presented as offerings or perhaps tokens of remembrance of what has come to pass. SIX more teeth line the left sleeve and SIX teeth line the right. When combined there are a total of 18 teeth throughout the design. 18 has a root number of 9 (1+8= 9). The number 9 symbolizes completion, spiritual enlightenment, universal love, and the transformation of personal experience into deeper wisdom. Being the final single digit number in the decimal system, the number 9 represents the full expression or conclusion of a cycle, which in turn means the number 18 marks the end of one cycle in preparation for a new phase. ๐Ÿฆท This design will be sent off to our pal @modestmerch this coming week and will be hand printed right here in Chicago. *PLEASE NOTE: The mockup is just a visual representation.
