In the interests of safety, the Cow Tower Dippers are discouraging swimming in the Wensum due to the current environmental situation!
The Cow Tower Dippers were deeply saddened to discover a significant number of deceased fish in the river Wensum this morning (01/08/2026)
We have heard reports of many dead fish in the last 24 hours from Cow Tower to Whitefriars. Suspected combination of sewage pipe breaches due to heavy rain and also very low oxygen counts in river.

52 swimmers and dippers turned out today! It was great to see so many new faces enjoying the beautiful Wensum!
That said, we thought it was worth putting a note out about how to stay safe in the water.
We always endorse people making their own risk assessment of the water and conditions, and only entering if they feel comfortable to do so.
Everyone has different abilities and differing water confidence. Just because your friend goes in, doesn't mean you have to!
Of course this list is not exhaustive, please do your research and be responsible around any body of water!

Some of the Cow Tower Dippers did a river litter pick today, keeping the river looking its best ❤️ it's so important to look after the green and blue spaces that we love so much! Special thanks to @sup_shenanigans for organising and for @norfolkpaddleboards support as always!

Achievement unlocked!! 🔓 Getting into a river was on my bucket list for 2026, so started off with a very gentle pootle down the River Wensum in Norwich where we joined the very lovely and (very friendly) @cowtowerdippers for a refreshing 12°C jaunt. I’d not yet swum in a river proper, so this was very exciting for me!

This is a super friendly local group that meets every Saturday, there are some simple steps to get in and out, and people mostly swim upstream and then head back to get out in the same place. This was also the first time I’ve been able to use my tow float bag so stash my phone.

Being at river level was so wonderful in the sunlight; we swam with swans, signets, and herons – and it’s very much their river! I felt a little like I was in @raveonfortheavon!

Today was something a little different, celebrating the 80th birthday of the Cow Tower Dippers founder, beloved leader, dearest friend, and kindest soul, Pete.
Sauna, singing, and cake was on the agenda today. Nothing but good vibes and love ❤️
