Great student accommodation is about more than the spaces themselves – it’s about how students feel when they live there.

To celebrate the completion of Journal Market Way, we asked students for their first impressions, from the communal dining spaces and speakeasy to the library and study spaces.

But what stood out to them most wasn't just one specific space, but a feeling: that the people behind it genuinely cared about who'd be living there.

In partnership with our clients, we design for the people who live, work and move through spaces like these every day.

Where you live shapes almost everything about how you live: how you get to work or study, and how easily you can see the people you care about. With accessible and affordable homes in short supply, too many people don't get to choose.

At La Vera in Macquarie Park, designed by COX, 15 NDIS apartments sit close to transport, shops and Macquarie University, alongside 34 affordable homes built to the same standard as every other residence. One apartment is also provided rent-free to @womenscommunitysheltersau, giving women a place to stay while they work towards a longer-term home.

Everyone deserves to come home to somewhere safe, and to live there with dignity. It has been a privilege to work with @urbanpropertygroup, @nswgov, @cityofryde, @arcadialandarch and the wider team on La Vera. by @coxarchitecture

Renewing an ageing building has long been treated as a compromise. Increasingly, it’s the smartest way to create resilient, future-ready cities.

The repositioning of 111 Bourke Street is proof: its original façade stayed almost entirely intact, with new additions built directly around the existing structure.

At ground level, three crafted terracotta pavilions create a network of spaces inside and out: new garden terraces, a bustling café edge, and a meeting room and third spaces, complemented by terracotta, timber and rammed earth details throughout.

Delivered for Charter Hall and @bgreinc , 111 Bourke Street now stands as a civic anchor within Melbourne's rapidly evolving East End.

Most of the time, the people who a building is designed for are the last ones we hear from.

To celebrate the completion of Melbourne’s newest student accommodation, Journal Market Way, we asked students for their first impressions.

Located adjacent to the Queen Victoria Market precinct and including the adaptive reuse of the heritage Burbank House, Journal Market Way introduces a new benchmark for student living, with diverse amenity spread throughout the building, to support connection, collaboration and a sense of belonging.

To mark the first flight from Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, we’re looking back at how the airport was first drawn. First Sketch to First Flight brings together the drawings and design thinking behind the terminal’s concept design, created in partnership with @zha.world

In the window, a drawing by COX Principal David Holm captures the five design principles that shaped the terminal: The Australian Bush, The Veranda, The Great Australian Light, The Ochre Gathering and Crossing Country.

It opens in the window of our Sydney studio at 70 George Street on 29 October.

A premium lounge inspired by the landscape beyond the runway. As Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) prepares to open, the airport has unveiled a first look at The Rayleigh Lounge.

Drawing inspiration from the Cumberland Plain and Blue Mountains, the space celebrates the colours, light and character of Western Sydney.

Designed by COX to create a uniquely local experience from the moment passengers arrive.

"Sharing what we learn through practice is one way of helping the next generation understand not just what we build, but why we build it."

COX Senior Architect, Muhammad Abdul Latiff recently took a group of architecture students from the University of Melbourne (@unimelb) through Journal Market Way, our newly completed student accommodation for @journalstudentliving.

As an alum himself, Muhammad found it rewarding to see how actively the students engaged, and how sharing his insights could help them envisage their own futures.

The group explored the things a drawing can't show: how heritage requirements and real-world constraints can shape the design, from the first ideas to the finished building. These conversations are just as valuable to us, offering a fresh view of our work through the eyes of the generation it was designed for. by @coxarchitecture

Now complete: introducing Journal Market Way, a new student accommodation precinct located at the edge of Melbourne’s iconic Queen Victoria Market.

This project asks a simple question: what if a home for students measured itself by connection, not unit count?

This ambition shaped every design decision: spaces spread throughout the building invite people out of their rooms and support meaningful interactions. A Grand Library, makers' space, podcast studio, games lounge, cinema and music room culminate in a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the city.

At the heart is Burbank House, a heritage building adaptively reused to become part of daily life at Journal Market Way, giving a piece of old Melbourne a new social purpose.

Beyond being Melbourne's newest purpose-built student accommodation, Journal Market Way designed for Journal Student Living and delivered by @Multiplex, will also redefine student living in Australia.

For Ballarat fans who waited patiently through the redevelopment, the excitement of a big match day is back, right here on home turf.

The @westernbulldogs and @stkildafc brought elite women's football to Mars Stadium for its first major event since completion, with fans taking their seats in a new 5,000-seat grandstand that doubles the stadium's seating to 10,000.

When the crowds head home, the same ground returns to local juniors, and the new athletics track, clubhouse and park open the precinct to schools, clubs and anyone out for a walk, a ride or a kick of the footy. It's a place the city will continue to grow up with.

Delivered by @developmentvic on behalf of Sport and Recreation Victoria in partnership with @cityofballarat, designed by COX in association with Morton + Co Architects, and built by @kaneconstructions and @awnicholsonptyltdw.

Great airports do more than move people.

They become symbols of connection, ambition and possibility.

They help shape how people experience a place, and how a region sees itself.

As Western Sydney International Airport (@wsiairport) gets ready for take-off, COX Principal David Holm reflects on an 11-year journey from first sketch to first flight, and the role architecture can play in shaping a region's future.

"Good airport design should be close to invisible when you're running late for a flight. I hope some will notice something more poetic: a place with a rich history and an exciting future."

Can a 100-year-old material outlast a five-year-old one?

French polisher Peter Berger thinks so. Forty-six years into his trade, he's restoring the finish on original timber doors and joinery inside Brisbane's Treasury Building, part of the landmark's transformation into @griffithuniversity's new Brisbane City building.

Alongside Peter, heritage plasterer Scott McMillan is also using materials and techniques that have survived for generations, and both believe their work today could endure for generations more. The bigger question is whether the centuries-old crafts themselves will survive long enough to keep restoring buildings like this one.

We went behind the scenes with the craftspeople conserving the Treasury Building, and heard why the knowledge needed to care for our oldest buildings is itself at risk of disappearing.

What if a hospital could be a civic asset, one that's welcoming, accessible and somewhere you'd want to be, even if you're perfectly healthy?

At the new Footscray Hospital, designed by COX and @billardleece, that's exactly the ambition, to create a welcoming, legible environment, one where the journey through it feels soft and fluid, calm and connected to nature.

Natural materials, expressive colour palettes and light-filled spaces soften the clinical setting, challenging that usual stigma. This design philosophy has just been highly commended at the 2026 Design & Health International Academy Awards as one the world's leading healthcare projects over 40,000m2.

Hosted by the International Academy for Design and Health, we're proud to share this recognition with our clients and project partners: @plenarygroup, @westernhealthau, @plenarygroup, Vida Health, @victoriauniversity, @tractconsultants.
