I continue to be grateful that I have the time, luxury, drive and passion to be obsessed about fishing trips that are still 6 months away. The current fixation is white muddler variants for Atlantic Salmon choosing to return to the rivers of Quebec. What playing? Canned Heat. What's in the can? Comatose double IPA. Sometimes the best experiences are made through an open mind. When a salmonfly hatch trip is interrupted by snow, high water, and thunderstorms day after day, shaking it up might be the answer. Although it takes quite a few sz22 zebra midges to match the caloric intake of a salmonfly steakdinner, beggars can't be choosers and if that's what they want, why argue?

On a whim I left the giant dry dropper rig in the truck and matched the midge size along with 6x tippet and a soft tip rod for big fish. Result? Some of the best fishing and fulfilling experiences I have ever had on the water.

There is something special in pursuing large, long snouted, trout with tiny flies and light tippet. However I admit it's an acquired taste and not everyone's cup of tea. That said, this week In 2 tailwaters in Idaho and Oregon it gave me a world class fishing experience, truly remarkable. Thanks to so many of you that have taken the time to share skills with me through posts and in person on the water over the years. And thanks to companies that keep pushing the limits to do better..... such as tippet strength. I'm pretty sure I would of lost several fish over 20" this week 5 years ago if it wasn't for a spool of 2022 fulling mill 6x and my 2wt g.loomis rod. For 5 decades I’ve heard “Chris, go fishing!” from one person more than any other. She knew I was rabid from an early age. Initially, at 6 or 7, it was probably to give her respite, but that changed. Mom was alone in rural Maine when COVID hit so eventually she came to live with us in Central Oregon. Although she never could understand the idea of catch and release, and never held a rod, she was into fishing. She poured over my bug books, watched me tie after a long day of zoom meetings, and when she saw any discontent she would say “Chris, go fishing!”, but now for my respite. She would gladly pass up a trip to the park or road trip knowing I was up to waist in Cascade waters. After getting a couple of Covid shots her desire for Maine began to grow. Just before her flight back we got on the river to watch Redside top water action and diving Ospreys fishing out of season. Flying her back she momentarily clutched a Flyfish Journal staring out the window at a western landscape she may never see again. As she stared at blue ribbons below, I could hear her think....Chris go fishing! Several years ago I was on a float for an article in the Northeast to highlight a recovered brown trout fishery after a century of pulp production. We slapped the shore with streamers all morning and netted a number of small fish and one 21" Brown. By lunch the trip was a success but leaned heavily on that one fish. After sandwiches I went back to my love of nymphing. A dropped in a stone at the top of riffle in 12" of water. Seconds later, boom! Several tense minutes layer a 19" brown was in the net. It solidified the story...the fishery was recovering.
Fast forward a handful of years to this weekend.The salmonfly and big Stone hatch has tapered off, but nice fish still come to the net. Although the hookups don't bring the upper size class I know it can. This river gets some heavy pressure so I start experimenting, with that Eastern float lesson in my mind. Certainly no one is throwing sz18 purple tungsten bead Czech nymphs. I hit the top of riffles and a day later I am graced with three fish over 20". I can't give good rationale,...opportunity calories is likely. The point? Never stop experimenting and do something different! Learned a lot about internal expectations the last couple of days. High water for the opener on the Lower Deschutes scared all but a small handful of rods away. Fishing would be mediocre right? Reality dealt a different hand thanks to a little blue perdigon that got beat up time and time again. Thanks to @fulling_mill my plans for the day just disappeared with the arrival of precious hooks and tungsten! Had so many important things to get done, but that doesn't matter now. After much experimentation this year with hooks, beads and materials here is what I can find no other name for than "the producer." Obviously a slight variation of a Lance Egan Frenchie, this color combination on a #14 barbless jighook has produced in Central Oregon like nothing else. I have been bewildered at it's talent for inducing many many fish over 20" to snack. Why share secret sauce? Hey why not? Hunkering deep beneath the quick moving chop above, the great American Mountain Whitefish waits for small nymphs. Supple lips and gentle takes somehow create powerful runs. Holding in current with heads down shows surprising tenacity from a mild mannered personality that deserves more respect. Although appropriately second behind the Deschutes Redside, I have come to love this underdog as they modestly pursue life underneath the Rainbow king. A priest once told me that Tuckerman was alter to the majestic cathedral of Mt. Washington, perhaps so. As my life expands to new places perhaps there are alters everywhere. Tonight it's being on a river with a setting sun projecting itself on dried grasses. The acoustics of rippling water dominates everything anything trying to compete. Black, brown, tan, small, medium, and large caddis bust from the water in an overlapping symphony, that in unison with the breaking waves, sounds a bit like Copeland to me. The hatch started not with a slow build up, but like a locomotive busting from an overstoked coal furnace. The opportunistic time to add mass brought every local Redside to the surface. As the pool turned calm, so was I. My eyes stared at the moon while my mind stared at my connection with insects, fish and moving water. Our time together is as brief as I can make it, but their eyes connect me forever to their souls. I pull out my one double insulated IPA with not a care in the world, except rattlers and stray cattle on my trip back to the bedroll.
