Today we remember Doug Wisor, one of Craggy Range’s founding winemakers, who tragically passed away in a kitesurfing accident 22 years ago.

Those who worked alongside Doug remember his passion, knowledge, and boundless energy, especially at harvest. Amid the long, hectic weeks of vintage, he would organise a family meal to bring the whole team together. It’s a tradition that still lives on at Craggy Range today.

Doug also kept spirits high through vintage with his eclectic mix of tunes - The Beastie Boys were a particular favourite, often heard blasting across our Gimblett Gravels winery.

Born in the United States, Doug was an exceptional talent. His Pinot Noir and Syrah quickly earned acclaim as some of the finest wines being made in New Zealand at the time, helping put both Craggy Range and our country’s wines on the world stage.

In 2006, we established the Doug Wisor Memorial Scholarship in partnership with the American-Australian Association. Each year it gives a young, gifted American winemaker the chance to work harvest with us, carrying on Doug’s curiosity, his drive for excellence and his love of winemaking.

Today we raise a glass, and maybe turn the music up a little, for Doug, the remarkable young man whose influence continues to shape the Craggy Range story.

Introducing our Icon Pinot Noir Project.

We continue to invest in our Pinot Noir programme. Last year we planted a 3ha high-density block at our Te Muna Estate Vineyard, in Martinborough, on a prime site with soils we know are ideally suited to Pinot Noir.

We chose a massal selection of Abel and Clone 114, tended with soft pruning principles from day one. One year on, we’ve just finished native planting around this special block to encourage biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem.

Take a look at the progress - the vines are thriving, and we look forward to seeing how this exceptional site expresses itself in the wines to come.

Earlier this year, we welcomed the wonderful Gary Barlow @officialgarybarlow and Jason Manford @jasonmanford to Craggy Range as part of Gary Barlow’s Food & Wine Tour: New Zealand.

It was an absolute pleasure to host them and the crew, to share our story and show them around our Giants Estate, and to give them a taste of the hospitality we’ve come to be known for. Above all, it was a chance to shine a light on our special region in this corner of the world.

Spring sees the vineyards burst back into life, and this season we're replanting 7 hectares of Chardonnay at our Gimblett Gravels site in Hawke’s Bay, and 10 hectares of Pinot Noir at our Te Muna Road Vineyard in Martinborough.

With each vintage, our understanding and knowledge of both these sites deepens, and these considered decisions are made with our long-term perspective in mind, aligning with our 1,000 year family trust.

These young vines will carry the story forward for decades to come, and and we look forward to the wines they will one day become.

Hawke's Bay Chardonnay has recently been in the spotlight. In her latest report for @jaspermorris.insideburgundy, @janeskiltonmw writes of a growing confidence in the production of Chardonnay in the region, and notes that it is "attracting the attention of critics and, more importantly, wine drinkers".

The 2024 vintage was one for the books, for Craggy Range it was our 25th harvest, and the first with Chief Winemaker Ben Tombs at the helm.

Our Chardonnay style continues to evolve. Picking earlier holds onto freshness and natural acidity, while complexity and a distinct minerality let each wine express its site. Together they show the consistency and quality of Chardonnay across our Prestige, Estate and Appellation collections.

It's been a busy few weeks for our winemaking team. Recently at our Giants Estate, they were racking the 2026 vintage components of our iconic Sophia and Te Kahu. Individual parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are aged separately, allowing each to develop its own depth and complexity in barrel. Next year they'll be carefully assessed and blended to embody the character and elegance these remarkable wines are known for.

This follows the racking of our Gimblett Gravels Syrah to barrel a couple of weeks ago. So far it's showing elegant black fruits and an intensely perfumed nose, and we're looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

The 2024 Sophia is the height of elegance and longevity. This Bordeaux-style blend predominantly showcases Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted at our Giants Winery in Hawke's Bay, Sophia embodies opulence, with ripe flavours and a tannin structure that will only age gracefully.
