As we prepare for our final weekend at the Athenaeum, we’d like to share some images from the various Sanctuary Stories.

Pictured:

Northwestern @medillschool professor Craig Duff—who created this project with reporting by Stephen Franklin—narrates the 95-minute performances.

Matt Specht @jumpymatt plays two roles in Sanctuary Stories, here embodying a former immigration judge who explains why he left the bench.

Gabriela Barrios @gabrielavbarrios plays a young entrepreneur who worries about the loss of her Temporary Protected Status.

Jean Marie Koon @jeanmariekoon is Sister JoAnn Persch, a 91-year-old Sister of Mercy who fought for immigrant rights for decades.

George Dougherty @georged914 portrays Father Brendan Curran, a Dominican friar and Catholic priest who’s been an advocate for immigrants and a regular present at Friday morning prayers in Broadview.

Amber Dow @ambadow plays Pastor Beth Brown at the Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church, a leader in the Sanctuary Working Group in Chicago.

Caonguyen Vu @caonguyennvu is The Citizen, a Rohingya refugee who fled Burma at age 11 and became a U.S. Citizen after being resettled in Chicago.

And Matt Specht is also The Mayor: Daniel Biss of Evanston, who says his experiences at protests in Broadview gave him new insight into the administration’s motives.

And rounding out the show: Karen Stocker, Emily Haden Lee @emhadenlee and Flo Estes @floestes52 perform Flo’s original song “I Come From the World.”

Not pictured is Lori Navarrete @ohnavarrete who plays a DREAMER working to offer support to those with family members facing deportation.

Sanctuary Stories runs for four more performances: tonight (10/16) at 7:30pm, Saturday (10/17) at 2:00 and 7:30, and Sunday at 3:00 pm. In Athenaeum Center’s Studio B.

Pictured: Gabriela Barrios @gabrielavbarrios portrays The Businesswoman, a successful entrepreneur facing the expiration of the Temporary Protected Status that allowed people from her country to stay in the U.S. and build lives in Chicago.

It’s one of eight different real Chicagoans featured in Sanctuary Stories: A Journalism Theater Project. It’s a show that marries journalism with live theater to create a “living documentary” experience.

@buzzcenterstage says Sanctuary Stories “blurs the line between journalism and theater, turning real interviews about Chicago’s immigration crackdowns into vivid, verbatim monologues performed live.”

Only four performances left! Get tickets for this weekend — 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday and matinees at 2:00 on Saturday and 3:00 pm on Sunday.

Tickets and info: sanctuarystories.org

See the “living documentary,” reviewer Bill Esler calls “a deeply human, quietly powerful piece that reconnects audiences to stories too often flattened by conventional news.”

Pictured: Amber Dow @ambadow does double-duty for Sanctuary Stories, both as a vocalist — singing the opening number and a hymn in one of the stories — and as an actor, playing Pastor Beth Brown at Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church.

The final four performances of Sanctuary Stories are this weekend. Must close Sunday the 18th!

Pictured: Matt Specht — @jumpymatt — performs as The Judge, a story crafted verbatim from an interview with a former immigration judge who quit the bench because he believed that proposed changes would limit his judicial independence. He made the decision to leave when the Trump administration offered buyouts to federal employees.

Sanctuary Stories: A Journalism Theater Project marries journalism with live theater to create a “living documentary” experience.

Performances are in Studio B at the Athenaeum Center for Thought and Culture. Final performances are this weekend on Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm, with matinees on Saturday at 2:00 and Sunday at 3:00pm
