Ideological shaping refers to the unconscious manipulation of users’ beliefs, values, and views through algorithmically selected content. Social media platforms personalise what users see based on their past behaviour. This reinforces existing opinions and subtly introduces new ideas, such as cultural norms, social trends, or political attitudes. This process creates echo chambers, where users are mostly exposed to content that supports what they already believe. As a result, they see fewer different viewpoints, and divisions between groups grow stronger. Over time, users absorb these ideas as their own, often without realising they were externally shaped. by @create.with.vb

Social platforms are intentionally designed to capture and hold user attention using behavioural psychology. Through mechanisms like infinite scroll, variable rewards, and personalised content loops, platforms encourage users to return, remain, and repeat. Research by Shoshana Zuboff has shown that platform engagement is intentionally designed to exploit psychological vulnerabilities, reinforcing compulsive use through behavioural design. Moreover, neuroscientific research, including the work of Adam Alter, has shown that such engagement exploits dopamine-based reinforcement, gradually shifting behaviour toward automatic, compulsive use. Over time, this shifts engagement from conscious choice to automatic habit. Users unconsciously develop compulsive patterns of seeking stimulation, even in the absence of intention or satisfaction. This loss of self-control supports engagement metrics and leads to emotional fatigue, mental dependency, and a modern form of informational gluttony. by @create.with.vb

Loss of authentic identity occurs when individuals shape their self-image around external validation through the number of likes, views, and followers on social media. Such platforms, through algorithmic amplification and mass engagement, reward idealised and performative personas that deviate from the true self. Instant visibility, where individuals can become famous within hours, intensifies this effect by reinforcing the link between public approval and personal worth. As admiration becomes increasingly directed at these fabricated images, individuals begin to internalise this attention and associate it with self-value. Over time, this cycle unconsciously inflates the ego. This psychological dynamic is described in False Self Theory by Donald Winnicott (1965), where the self becomes increasingly shaped by external expectations rather than authentic inner experience. The result is the formation of illusions of superiority, which ultimately lead to pride. by @create.with.vb

Emotional exhaustion refers to the psychological fatigue resulting from compulsive patterns of social media use. Platforms are designed to trigger rapid dopamine responses through notifications, likes, and personalised content, reinforcing constant checking and emotional dependence. This cycle mirrors the variable reward systems studied in behavioural neuroscience, such as in Berridge and Robinson’s research on dopamine-driven incentive salience. As users get used to frequent stimulation, their engagement becomes repetitive and mentally draining. Over time, this leads to emotional and cognitive overload, followed by apathy, burnout, and a gradual withdrawal from real-life experiences. In prolonged cases, users may enter a passive form of laziness, marked by reduced motivation and difficulty finding pleasure in meaningful activity. by @create.with.vb

Social comparison in digital environments refers to the constant and large-scale evaluation of one’s self-worth against idealised representations of others. It exposes individuals to an endless and globalised race of self-evaluation shaped by curated lifestyles, appearances, and achievements. Unlike traditional comparison, which was limited to peers in physical proximity, social media expands this dynamic broadly. Platforms reinforce the process by prioritising ideal content and displaying visible engagement metrics. This exposure activates automatic comparison mechanisms, which are part of natural human cognition and often operate without conscious awareness. The psychological dynamic is rooted in Leon Festinger’s Social Comparison Theory (1954), which explains how individuals evaluate themselves in relation to others to construct a sense of identity and self-worth. Over time, this erodes self-esteem and gradually fosters the growth of envy. by @create.with.vb

Behavioural conditioning on social media platforms refers to the reinforcement of user behaviour through visible feedback systems such as likes, shares, notifications, and follower counts. These features act as external cues that reward or discourage specific actions, creating repetitive engagement patterns that often operate without deliberate awareness. Positive feedback triggers dopamine responses, gradually shifting user motivation from self-expression toward the pursuit of approval and recognition. This mechanism reflects B.F. Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning, in which behaviour is shaped and maintained through systems of reward and reinforcement. Over time, this reshaping of internal motivation cultivates an intense greed for external validation, social recognition, and personal significance. by @create.with.vb
